Excellent Vlog. Liverpool Exchange Station and platforms was above Ground right were the carpark is now and connected to Mersey rail were it comes out now towards Southport/Ormskirk. Also there was a walkway under the Carpark.I know it was still open back in the mid 90s and when upgrading the carpark bricked it off with the Black bricks you see now all along the front. If you were able to get a copy of the Liverpool Movie “Letter to Brezhnev” starring Margi Clarke / Peter Firth from the mid 80s it shows the old walkway under the Carpark. In the movie it’s from 14 - 15 mins in and shows them running through the tunnel/walkway. It was a long walkway tiled on one side and caged off the other side with pillars every 10 feet the caged/fenced off side.Going the length of the car park and coming out at the back of Moorefields train station. I went through it a few times back in the mid 80s when I was a teenager. The entrance was on the other side or were the entrance of the Carpark ramp going up to the above carpark is now. Excellent reccomendation.

I used to travel to Southport from Exchange Station. Exchange Station entrance was on Tithebarn Street. Some years ago, I was back in Liverpool and I walked (what used to be the length of the station). At the end of the station it just stopped. No tracks or anything and it was all grassed over. Loved your video. Thank you. Spoolbox.

There was a smaller pedestrian tunnel you could walk through until the late 80’s, this was also used in the film ‘Letter to Brezhnev’ I think Margie Clarke got legged through it if I remember.

Hey George, that was a good one. I have a feeling that they are old Railway Goods Warehouses. There used to be a place called Great Howard St Goods Depot, it was built before Liverpool Exchange, in fact the amount of Railway around there was simply staggering. They look very similar to the old Goods Depot underneath Manchester Piccadilly which I have been in, only the one in Manchester is much Bigger. Some of these places used to cover some distance around a Main station and they all tend to look alike apart from the actual layout.

From Google Earth, it looks like this raised track section was connected to the three raised block structures further north up Pall Mall along Love Lane, that would've connected onto the mainline which is now the Northern Line. It's harder to track the bombing runs in the city centre because it was literally ' blitzed ' but further out you can see traces. I'm in Bootle/Litherland, you can track the destruction. It's like they used Stanley Road and headed north. If you use the canal bridge before The Strand, where Theatres and huge shops stood, past the 3 banks roundabout, along towards Johnsons The Cleaners, the Matchworks, and beyond, you can track all the way to Seaforth and then the docks. On the ground you can see where any newer building (70s, 80s) are and definitely say that's where bombs hit. They weren't necessarily strategic targets. These were civilian targets. So where you were, you say, if you where on a bombing run. First target. Liverpool and Pier Head then carry on up the main road routes towards the docks. We still had bomb sites up into the 80s that we played on. Love ya work Fella. Top stuff.

I used to go shooting under exchange station back in the mid seventies. You went through the main entrance of the station and the train platforms were straight ahead. If you look right towards the end of the concourse there was a door with a sloping back to it. The kind you find on the top of buildings which give access to the roof. Through that door were wooden steps which lead to the Aintree rifle club. The range was about 50 yards long and the was a club room. Most of that area of Liverpool has the brick cellars similar to the Cabin club. There were some bricks loose in the wall behind the door to the club room, whe we had a look there was lots of office furniture stored in the next cellar. Always wondered what happened to it, I was about 17 at the time, the rest of the club members were in the late 40s and 50s. I'm probably the only living person that attended the club. Cheers

Lancaster was the name of the Audi dealership that used to be opposite, they probably rented it for storage. Where the tunnels are blocked off at the end, is where the Northern line underground rails still pass by towards Moorfields station.

@@g2emedia1977 The person who was the mot tester and mechanic there lived in an old railway station in Merseyside I new him well at the time , don't want to say the station name on here but will tell you in a totally private communication, nothing dodgy just out of respect

You can follow the flow of the track bed further up where it rejoins the main line on Love Lane... More arches with a similar style being used as garages and stuff... Lots of plans for development in that area apparently. I presume there would have been bridges and arches the whole way up what is now Lanyork Road parking too. Arches like that common on railways to raise the track bed on the station approach. As a few people here have said, would be use for storage and businesses much like they are nowadays. Disused Stations website has a bit of info along with a photo which could be these (or similar) arches... I love finding old railway infrastructure, I should do it more often, good video!

Thanks for watching yeh ive done a little research on this shortly after this video and wow yes by love lane theres sections of the viaduct still there...the plan now is how i get on top of these for a video I checked out disused statiins after you mentioned it wow brilliant thanks

My grandad used to live in Highfield Gardens and we used to always play around here, there was a tunnel on Pall Mall that went right through to the stadium, I was always too scared to go in it.

No problem I just asked my mum who remembers it she just told me the trains never went under ground it was all above ground the subway was for walking through. Hope that helps. Look forward to many more.

There were a couple of narrower tunnel under passes that led from street level on Tithe barn street,up to platform level for passengers, one of which you caught the barred window of. In most of those tunnels was stored mail and general luggage for transport to other stations for ongoing journeys. On the Leeds street side was a goods yard and also passenger subways leading to the platforms. There were also Road ways leading up to the platforms for the “Donkeys “ , which were small 3 wheeled , battery operated trucks rather like milk floats that were used to haul long lines of baggage cars and mail trucks to street level. One more thing I forgot, Exchange had 2 turntables at one point in its life, the trains for Scotland and all points north departed from here until the end of steam. That is the smell still lingering, of the Sulphur coming from the coal.

The trains from Exchange station ran over a bridge across Leeds st ,those arches were underneath the main line , Leeds st had the start of the Liverpool,- Leeds canal hence its name ,there was old buildings there that were Stables and warehousing all delerict . The only subway i remember went from the old Stadium underneath Exchange station to pall mall , lived in Vauxhall gardens then changed beyond recognition

Interesting that George. I always thought the old Exchange station was further into town on Tithebarn street It was also borded up or under construction last time I went past. Probably over 10 years ago now. I think the line above must lead to the old station 11:33

It was a terminus branching off from the northern line from sandhills and moorfields. I think the tunnels you went in were to possibly connect the platforms via a subway?

I thought maybe it would have been a subway old maps suggest a subway but further down where the land has been developed but nothing up this end? Thanks for watching much apperciated

The old exchange station as the crow flies is dead ahead of these isn't it, you can see where the tracks would've ran into it overhead, I reckon they could've been a BR goods warehouse? Deffo something to do with the running of the old exchange though, fascinating find that!

@@g2emedia1977 mad how there's nothing on it, but, if you go on street view and look at the last arch opposite the car showroom at the junction, there's a sign in BR font that says "Lancaster", I seem to remember the Echo covering a story about some old passenger tunnels around the Prussia St area too, maybe the were connected somehow? Got me thinking this 😂
