Well, They're cult classics. Halloween is probably his most mainstream accessible movie. The Thing and They Live, while amazing, are largely ignored by mainstream cinema outlets.

Critics may not have respected carpenter but critics are shit. They dont seem to get their job is to direct people to the films theyll personally like.. rather they want to fit into their scene of.. loser idiots. I think most people who saw it realised how brilliant this and the thing are.

man you forgot to mention the most improtant thing about the alley brawl scene: its a metaphor of cognitive dissonance and how its hard to make people SEE they're been lied to.

There's also the important element that there are several people hanging out with the aliens, meant to show that the upper class and colonists use some select subjects to elevate--either to get them to, or because they already do, support the status quo.

Funny...I was to unnerved as a child to watch "They Live" all the way through, so the first time I heard a derivative of that line was in "Dazed and Confused". "I only came here to do two things, kick some ass and drink some beer. Looks like we're almost outta beer."

This movie was way way ahead of it's time, which might explain why some people didn't really get it when it first came out. But it's more relevant now than it's ever been. By the by I'm loving this channel more with every review I watch. Finally someone is speaking my language. Keep up the great work man, looking forward to watching more reviews.

I saw this movie once, and only once, back in 1989. I remember thinking it was an OK film, but nothing special. I just watched it again after watching this review and finally realized just how epic this film is. Thanks for posting this. I love rediscovering films.

Honestly, I think part of the reason I like this movie so much is BECAUSE it looks so cheap. It doesn't look like a movie, it looks like reality. For a film about alien invasion, there's no big set pieces or bright lights, and that makes it just seem so much more plausible.

Interesting reasoning behind the name of the main charterer. Because, "Nada" also means "hope" in most Slavic languages.

Carpenter is easily one of my favourite, if not sole favourite, movie directors. Guy is brilliant, and anytime I bring up favourite movies ever, there is ALWAYS a Carpenter movie mentioned.

They Live will always be a very important movie to me. An absolute gem. It's got such a deep meaning to it .

No way, he played the homeless to be the back round characters? Man that was so awesome 🙆. Smart, but so nice and sweet. And that low of a budget?...with a commercial social commentary?...some one tell le when I've praised this thing enough without even seeing it first?

This is one of the greatest movies of all time, and I agree with Piper. It isn't fiction. The 'aliens' may not be from another planet, but certainly from a different ideology.

this movie is awesome. one of the best movies ever made. and for good reason it is a cult classic. the story and message of this movie is still valid for todays world even more than it was back then.

The same thing is happening in games. I don't mind if it makes sense in the scene and isn't out of place or blatant. Sometimes though, they bombard you with it, making it a focal point and it is ridiculous. I just saved the world from giant robots and nuclear war, good thing I have my Doritos and Mountain Dew, I'm exhausted. Speaking of games, it was cool seeing Piper and David in Saints Row 4 kicking alien ass.

Nostalgia from a time Hogan was the ultimate badass, pro-wrestling was real, and i was thoroughly emotionally invested in every film i saw, piece of crap or no.

I absolutely love John Carpenter! Probably my favorite director, a guy who genuinely wants to make a good movie with the resources he has instead of spending $300 million making a toy commercial. 'Halloween', 'Assault on Precinct 13' and 'They Live' all prove a talented guy can make superb films for a few million dollars. Are you going to cover 'Body Bags' at any point? I find it pretty underrated as horror anthologies go and not just because the man himself is introducing the segments.

Hell there are commercials out there that are disguised as TV shows. There was no subtlety in that Subway scene at all.

This film is a classic! The legendary fight scene goes on forever, love it!

I wish I’d heard about this movie earlier in my life, it’s honestly such an incredible commentary on consumerism & humanity. I wondered why the alley fight was even a thing while watching, but the main actor being a wrestler makes a lot of sense. I’d just assumed it was meant to show how humans at their core will always be primal beings that fight, yet will also team up/stick by other humans when needed, in order to contrast humanity to the aliens.

Does anyone remember the mcdonalds billboards with black print on white backgrounds saying, I'm loving it! There were like 3 of those signs in the city I use to live in. Always reminded me of they live, and not to eat at McDonald's.

It is quite unbelievable how many amazing movies Carpenter made. My personal favorite is either "The Thing" or "In the Mouth of Madness", can't decide.

Also, according to Piper, not only did Vince match Piper's pay for They Live, he offered him the WWF title for no less than one year, which would have made him even more money..lots more. He was smart to turn it down.

Oh man what a movie, just as good today as it was years ago. It made me feel so sophisticated when I was a teenager, like I totally got how it was a definitive 80's movie but also had this really valuable message. I can still remember the VHS box.

It just occurred to me that The Fly II was how I discovered your channel. I maintain to this day that it's one of the most fun movies I've watched.

Meg Foster had probably the most sexy eyes out of any actress.

I was always excited when a Carpenter movie came out. The two Escape films, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, this one. The man made some of the best films of all time. Even his "bad" ones were pretty neat and had some good concepts and characters.

Thank-you Cecil for articulating what I have always liked about this movie. It deserves much more attention than it got!

It was good that Him and Keith David were able to get back together and reprise their roles in SR 4. That was a nice little segment of the game, and showed a lot of heart and dedication in an otherwise-absurd franchise.

John Carpenter really is a god among men. They Live is just another home run.

John and Guilermo Del Toro are two of the trinity of what I call, Perfect Directors. These are people that while maybe the dont do blockbusters or have a HUGE library of films they did, they have one thing going for them. Their films are consistently good/entertaining and none of them are straight up "bad". The third person out of the Trinity would be Paul Verhoeven, best known for Starship Troopers and Robocop.

I came across this movie completely by accident a few years ago. Had no idea about what it was about but figured I'd give it a shot cause of the poster. Almost immediately I knew that it was a piece of magic. Loved every second of it. Surprisingly my dad had also never seen it so sent him a copy. I'm glad he got to see it before he died.

I am so glad i walked into dimple records one day and saw the cover of They Live.... The cover alone intrigued me so I bought it!! *this is your god* worth spent!!

Love this movie. Got a chance to meet Piper and he signed my copy of THEY LIVE!

When you said the line "your favorite shows are interrupted..." an ad literally popped up at that exact moment.

They Live is awesome, and another Carpenter triumph. That bit at the end you discussed about ads is so true, and makes this film even more significant.

This movie is amazing. I remember seeing it as a kid and being totally freaked out by the creepy alien faces. As a bonus it even has teleportation mixed in. Beat that "Jumper"!

The Bubblegum line was one I heard years before I even saw the film. Its a shame that most of John Carpenter's films are only seen as Cult films nowadays. If I remember, didn't the original short story end with what was the resistance massacre near the end of the film?

Saw this in theatre, was graduating high school that year then off to infantry training. The movie was similar to nothing else before. It was, in my opinion, upon release, one of the most original, quality movies I had seen to that point and it has remained so.

A youtube commercial popped up in the middle of the reviewer complaining about how commercials pop up in the middle of what you're watching.

They live is one of my favorite films of all time :)

Ah, to discover a classic movie recently now. It's the best, isn't it? I just saw for the very first time Brain Dead(or Dead Alive depending or where you are) about a year ago, before then I never even knew about it but it's a FANTASTIC movie! Fucking LOVED THAT movie! After watching it I wondered how in the hell I never even heard of it, not on TV, not from a friend, and then just happen to come across it on the internet by pure coincidence. Loved it.Awesome, awesome, movie. If you haven't seen it, you really should.

There was a They Live video game back in the day for the Sega Genesis. It's worth a ton of money now.

I finally watched this movie in it's entirety thanks to you, I've never gotten past the 20 minute mark before, something about it just never got me attached enough. But after seeing this posted I decided to watch the movie first. So thanks, and after hearing about the budgetary and time constraints on the film, its incredibly impressive that it turned out as well as it did.

Kim Kardashian? I fucking knew it!! It all makes so much sense now. How did the beloved Rowdy Roddy Piper put it? "That's like pouring perfume on a pig..."

I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees modern commercialism is worse than what was going on in the 80s. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of commercialism back then, but some people talk like that was 80s-specific(commercialism and materialism). They tend to judge that decade by it's vices, when those vices really haven't disappeared(and were probably dialed up significantly in the current time).

They Live is so close to reality most people have no idea....this movie tells so much truth about the dark cabal that run the world it's amazing it was allowed to be shown. Those that know will recognize so much truth and hidden messages in this movie. It's almost a documentary. Carpenter obviously knew so much more than he ever let on... people that think this is 'just a story' that he 'made up' are so mistaken... one of my all time favorite movies..

" people that think this is 'just a story' that he 'made up' are so mistaken... one of my all time favorite movies.." You contradicted yourself there, perhaps a "Freudian Slip"? Movies by definition are stories, works of fiction, figments of the imagination made manifest. People can be easily fooled by how good a story is or that it fits into something they believe. In Italy, this is for real, there is a balcony, that you can go and visit, that is supposedly the one from "Romeo and Juliet". Thousands of people visit it. That is how gullible people can be.

one of my top all time favorite movies. I watched it so many times growing up and still watch to this day from time to time.

Honestly, I know that Carpenter leans (far???) left, but I definitely got a much more Al Gore/Hillary Clinton era Democratic vibe from the aliens. Maybe that's just me though.

I really appreciate the work you put into this content lad.

One example why this movie is still good till this day: I have seen it more than 10 times and first watched it 20 years ago. My girfriend has never seen it. So we've changed that a couple of weeks ago. She stated, that she really loved this movie and felt, that it is so recent with its themes, that it could be easily released today and the story would still hold up without any changes. This movie was way ahead of it's time while also being spot on with it's themes when it was released. What a classic!

Hiring the homeless? Every time I hear something about Carpenter, he gets more awesome.

Halloween, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Escape From New York, In the Mouth Of Madness, The Prince of Darkness, Dark Star, The Fog, Village of the Damned, Christine, Ghosts of Mars (I'm prob the only one who actually liked this back when it came out) - this man has done more great films IMHO than any other director, except maybe Nolan or Tarantino. I'm biased, I know, but damn, Carpenter is a guarantee for a thoughtful and cult classic movie. Thnx for the additional insight!

Awesome! 3:46 Mistake, or am I missing a reference? Crazy thing is, just this morning I watched an Obscurus Lupa video where she admits to "not getting" this movie. This video is like, the perfect answer to hers.

They live is as powerful today as it was then, more so.

NO WAY!!!!! I was sure Kanye West would be an alien when the glasses went over his face, Damn!!! :-D Love this movie, one of my personal fave John Carpenter flicks, it deserves so much more recognition than it gets.
