Exploring The World's Most Dangerous Sport | The Birdmen Chronicles | Spark

Ғылым және технология

Wingsuiting has been described as the most dangerous sport on earth. We take a journey into the adrenaline-fuelled world of this sometimes fatal activity and meet the people who take part.
-
This documentary shows a completely different side of this high adrenalin extreme activity. It zooms in on the individuals inside the birdman suits and reveals how their flying has forever changed them and altered their views on life and death. We follow a group of wingsuiters in South Africa at different stages of their wingsuiting careers, shortly after the country’s first wingsuit fatality. They speak with uncanny frankness about their reasons for being wingsuiters, the almost supernatural thrill of being able to fly like a bird, but also about the unique sacrifices the sport requires.
Featuring breathtaking visual imagery filmed in African, European and American skies, “The Birdmen Chronicles” tells a poignant story of human striving and sacrifice, and is sure to turn popular conceptions about birdmen and -women completely upside down.

I am 80 years young and have spent my entire life under the sea, on the sea, and in the air. I have 10,500 hours in the cockpit of 140 different types of aircraft and was a sky diver in my youth. some of the most incredible feelings in my sole was leaving the jump plane at 15,000 feet for 60 second free fall screaming through the air and feeling so alive. I never did any base jumping and would not really care too but I totally understand how they feel. I am at the end of my very happy life and thank god for the great and happy life that I lived. i

I think Geo’s story is the most relatable for me, he had varied interests and balance and perspective. My friend Jon died on his second wing suit jump, he spoke openly about being careful and not wanting to die from a mistake but in the end it came down to a small glitch that snowballed. This is one of the best documentary’s on wingsuit flying I’ve seen, well done.

Well done Charlene and Eddie Stanley, beautifully done (from a fellow South African). I did one parachute jump and two fixed-wing glider flights many, many years ago - and my nerves failed me, sadly, that was it for me. I am awestruck by base jumpers and admire their outlook on life.

In my 15 years in the military, I worked to getting my Master Jump Wings, becoming a certified diver, and graduating from sniper school. I accomplished all of those challenges. I also climbed mountains from Alaska to Argentina. I've been in combat around the globe, and survived as my brothers fell around me. I still visit them whenever I'm able at Arlington National Cemetery. I'm sure the civilians passing me believe that In quite insane as I talk to their markers, but I'm not. I just miss them, daily. With all of that said, I don't have any desire to fly in a wingsuit. None at all. I think that the people that do fly in wingsuits are incredible athletes and I have a lot of respect for their skills, though, and I wish them all well.

As someone who is considering getting into BASE after a hundred wingsuit skydives, this was a great help to put things into perspective. I guess the real thing it requires is trust in yourself. I was surprised to find that many of the top BASE athletes are engineers or scientists like myself. I thought I was abnormal for wanting to dig into the details and break the sport down into its components so that I felt safer. I guess that's the rule not the exception.

I am 62 years old. I guess that I wouldn't have got here if I had done wing suit flying. On the plus side: I have raised a daughter and two grandsons, albeit into a world of shit. On the minus side, I have never experienced the thrill of flying - or skydiving. Now I never will, as my body is almost done due to arthritis. My only concern, is that you plan to bring another life into this world, but have no concern for that person, if the worse comes to the worse!

Risking life to live life, is like saying you haven’t lived till you’ve killed. No matter what you get into can and will become a obsessive habit it’s all we can think of. When it’s all over, R.I.P. it’s suicidal and don’t try telling me it’s not. Fooling yourself for how long? Do all the calculations you want. I dont like sport with NO safety. Iv been skydiveing a few times its good. I dont like it when people that wire walk with no fall harness or people who climb cliffs "free style" with no ropes. Or people that use a pogo stick on the hand railing of a bridge. Thats the stuff thats semi sucide and I dont like it and I feel bad for those folks.

I'm going to ascertain that most of these folks don't have children of their own. They are living in the "me" phase rather than giving themselves to others (i.e. their family). This is not a criticism - I am a music fanatic in all aspects and my life would be hollow without it, but my children also make me 'grounded' in the choices I make.

Can you attach a inflatable to a 🦈 , then when it's floating knock a tooth out?? Handsomely. 😎 You could parachute from the sky onto its back attach the inflatable, ride the 🦈 to the surface, laugh your head off, knock its tooth out. Split the scene, the put it back in the water & see how it goes.

Downvote. The title, description and a lot of things said in the documentary by the commentator are extremly misleading. It's not Wingsuit flying that's (probably) the most dangerous sport, it's BASE jumping.

This title couldn't be more wrong and is just really bad clickbait. Wingsuiting is by far not the most dangerous sport, even paragliding is more dangerous. What is actually dangerous, is wingsuit basejumping. Too bad too many people mistake one for the other - while 99% of the wingsuiters don't base jump.

@@GammaFields Wingsuit base is jumping from cliffs and flying proximity to the ground, which is the most dangerous sport. Most skydivers/wingsuiters jump out of aircraft and stay far away from any obstacle before opening their canopy, this is actually a rather safe sport (safer then paragliding, downhill biking or riding a motorbike)

I cannot comprehend “losing easily twenty or thirty friends a year” to a hobby-related risk. It looks very cool through the camera lens, but I even more like to watch birds fly and know that they will land under control nearly every time they take wing. More power to those who contest the mass of air at-speed vs the tug of gravity!

41:45 It's a different thing to lose those in your perifery, but when it's your other half.... This is the most ridiculous sentiment I have ever heard. I'm not denying the truth of what she says. It's just like, but those other people were someones other half. Your point of view isn't novel. If you want to thrill seek, don't expect sympathy from those around you, who prefer not to watch. Especially when something like this happens to more than half the people who try it. This isn't a documentary as much as it is a sob story. You could make a feel good movie like this about almost anything.
