Exploring THE WILD SOUTH of NEW ZEALAND | OMARAMA CLAY CLIFFS and Oamaru

Exploring THE WILD SOUTH of NEW ZEALAND | OMARAMA CLAY CLIFFS and Oamaru
Oamaru is the STEAMPUNK CAPITAL of NEW ZEALAND. Today Matt and Nat travel to Oamaru in Waitaki, New Zealand. They have the weirdest travel day that comprises of a STEAMPUNK Musuem and WILD WEST adventure in the stunning OMARAMA CLAY CLIFFS. This weird travel day was not what we had anticipated... STEAMPUNK VS THE WILD WEST!
Steampunk HQ is a unique museum of art, sound & light showing an altered universe set within an 1880's Grain Elevator building in Oamaru. Featuring The Portal, a retro-futuristic mirror and lighting installation with original glowing light sculptures
Oamaru boasts the country’s oldest public gardens, renowned Victorian architecture and two penguin colonies. Oamaru, the largest town of the Waitaki District, has a rich history and proud heritage, enriched by the passionate and perhaps quirky locals. Explore this heritage in the Victorian Precinct, where you will find, shops, galleries and traditional crafts within some of the Southern Hemispheres most complete Victorian streetscapes and19th century architecture.
The Omarama Clay Cliffs are a geological wonder; ‘bad land’ sharp pinnacles and ridges separated by steep and narrow ravines.
The Cliffs at Omarama were created out of layers of silt and gravel deposited by ancient lakes and rivers around 20 million years ago. They have since been uplifted and tilted by the nearby active Ostler Fault, and eroded.
The cliffs are on private land and there is an honesty box at the gate where you are asked to pay $5 per car. After passing through the gate, drive to the carpark. From here you can walk up to and among the cliffs (10-15 mins from carpark one way). The road and track can get a little rough in winter - and inside the cliffs it is rocky and sometimes slippery underfoot. Closed, sturdy footwear is advised.

Oooh a steam punk museum that’s fun. The light experience was so pretty. That didn’t sound like the nicest road to drive down but the cliffs look really cool. X
