EXPLORING THE VENICE OF THE NETHERLANDS 🇳🇱 (dutch village of giethoorn)

In this episode, Michelle and Alex explore Giethoorn, a village in the Dutch countryside that's often called "the Venice of the Netherlands" because of it's beautiful, idyllic canals. Our goal is to find out if Giethoorn is something worthy of a day trip outside of Amsterdam... or if it's just a "tourist trap".

Yeah, me too! I watch all of your videos several times a day, and night, and always thought that it'd be good to meet in person one day. I always like and subscribe, so it'd be good to meet when I'm in Holland next month, right after I get released from jail, and go through one week of rehab at the mental health facility next door, and if my shrink allows me to travel, but I've already booked airfare and am looking for a place to stay, so it'd be good to meet at your house and I can crash on your couch? Let me know, I always like and subscribe, every time.

You 2 were so lucky that it was a quiet day. In summer and on sunny days in spring it is much more crowded. Around 2015 Chinese tourists invaded the village. Restaurants had their menus written in Chinese, shop workers learned some Chinese, boat rentals the same and so on. Covid stopped this invasion very abrupt. Now it is more diverse and you see more tourist from the Middle East, Japan, the US and so on these days.

For some reason I prefer my soup when it cooled down a bit. It gives the soup more flavor. Not sure if this goes for all soups though. All I missed in this vlog was the eighties theme song of Miami Vice when Michelle was driving that boat like a boss. 😎 Looking forward to your next video. Cheers, Rick

Giethoorn is a really nice place to go to. I've been there many times. I'm impressed you found such a quiet moment with so little amount of people there. Most of the times I've been there it was very busy with tourist and the canals were completely congested with boats. But there are some alternative routes you can take just outside Giethoorn, that are just as nice but without the many tourists.

I did go to Giethoorn few times in the past, before it became the hot tourist place it is now. Than it was a beautiful and quiet place in summer as well. We did go there on a small camping place and rented some kajaks. And I remember we did go to a restaurant or café after a whole day of kajaking drink some hot chocolate with cream. I still have that in mind it was the best hot chocolate milk I ever tasted. I remember it must be summer, but it was a cold day with bad weather, so probably that and because I still was a child, it make the taste of the hot chocolate even better. Probably now I would experience it differently. 😁 But yes the experience of the place it self was very good, maybe if I go there now when there is massive tourism the experience also will be different. I still want to go there some day to see how much it is changed by the massive tourism. And I have some Chinese friends who never been to the Netherlands, but always talk about Giethoorn, and if they come to the Netherlands, they definitely want to visit Giethoorn. So if they come I probably go there with them to visit Giethoorn. 😁

What a great video! IMHO, Giethoorn is BOTH a beautiful destination, and a terrible tourist hotspot. I didn't say 'trap' on purpose as obviously it's very beautiful and worth a visit. In our time there, our dutch cousins optimistically (or deviously) arranged for a bicycle built for two for my wife and I. What a terrible idea, but honestly... we had a great laugh and managed to stay out of everyone's way. But to your timing issue, yes arrive early and enjoy the quieter morning. It's so peaceful there. But by the afternoon the Chinese tourist buses arrive and the character of the place changes. That likely sounds awful, and just to be clear it's the quantity that's the issue. If it were bus loads of Americans they'd surely be louder and less well behaved. Lots of great food, lots of great cat footage. You guys have grown to the point I think you need a theme song. "Euro Bun Bun, Euro Bun Bun..." it needs work.

I have a way better advice for you, go to Friesland and book a rental boat (example at wetterwille rental) . This is wat natives and germans (and not tourists) do when they want to see beautiful scenery here.

Gentle correction-the Dutch drop the N at the end of most of their words, like “morgen.” The N is not pronounced. Giethoorn (and yeah, they do pronounce the N at the end of that, heh heh) really does look gorgeous.

Dropping the n at the end of words is not typical abn dutch imo. Maybe typical Hollands/Randstads? Personally i grew up and lived in parts of the Netherlands were the n at the end is pronounced, but the e before the n isn't. Also known as farmer 's accent/lower saxon accent.
