Exploring The Old Road On Assateague Island, Once Known As Ocean Beach

This was a video we've wanted to make for a while, and today we did! We went exploring the old road that was once put in for a development known as Ocean Beach on Assateahue Island. The Ash Wednesday storm of 1962 wiped out the island and many of the homes that were built, which prompted locals to go to the federal government to try to stop all development on the island. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed an act making Assateague a National Seashore.
Although we didn't find any cool treasures, it was still a fun day exploring! We'll continue the trek another day searching for any artifacts we can find. Thanks as always for watching!

Hi Jay and Ashley, in the early 90's I lived in OP and I volunteered for the National Park on Assateaque my job was to warn the people away from the horse's and when the tourist would not get back I would chase the horse's away and them, they would get upset with me. I had a park uniform and hat and the horse's knew to stay away from me, I rode a bike and had a radio it case of an issue, it was kind of funny when the tourist would not listen to me....Thanks for your video's.

My wife and I have been going to Assateague for over 25 years, and we just found this path 3 years ago. Baltimore Boulevard the main drive for the development project. Mother Nature had other plans.

From what I understand and read about, they removed the road but never completely removed it because of the budget. So that's the reason it's left like it is today.

Great video, would’ve been interesting to imagine how the island would’ve developed had they built there after the storm in 1963. Nixon apparently had a lot and was scheduled to build a home there. Maryland would’ve had their own island with “high net worth” individuals building single family homes instead of condos. I guess we got that today in Delaware. All of the people with big money buy up in Lewes and Rehoboth and have kind of ruined the area. For better or worse Biden causes a lot of traffic whenever he flies in…

  • @ReelJayB

They might....but trying to get anything out of the Park Service is...well...a giant pain. I've gone to them before for things and they aren't much help at all. I tried to go there to see where the old road went (for the Clements video I was doing) and the park service employee didn't even know a road existed nor even the name of the Clements house. It's baffling how little information they know about the history of the island.

I cannot understand why they haven't removed the remainder of Baltimore Blvd. Get rid of it and let nature be. All that garbage going into the sand will have major impacts in the years coming. I guess 60 years wasn't enough time to take it out. Sad to see. Even more sad to see the dead horses. And I'm surprised you didn't come in contact with any live horses. What a treasure where you live is. I'm so envious. Hope you all feel better soon!!

The old road is history, so they kept it as is. The rest of the road is pretty much gone and washed away. We saw a few horses towards the end of the video, but I always try to keep my distance. I don't want to know what it feels like to be kicked HAHA
