Exploring the MPC KEY 61 // Initial Thoughts and Beat Making

Музыка

Got my hands on the MPC Key 61 and have been putting it through its paces! This is a "first impressions" style vid with a beat making session, talking about the experience from someone that owns an MPC One and Live 2 already.

    Great demo - love the design of this one - especially the slanted controller/screen section. It all looks very well laid out. Btw - the Ambient Vocals pack you did is awesome, I'm having loads of fun playing with it and it's very inspiring.

    It's nice to see someone making a beat who is an actual real musician who knows what Music is so I don't think he's making a beat. I think he's just making music.

    Just ran into your review this morning, I own one of these, and it's a very powerful machine (with some quirks), granted this is my first MPC product so I'm still learning the shortcuts. I was hoping for a better keybed as you mentioned, but I agree with you, "It's good, but not great." The machine itself is pretty powerful as a keyboard workstation, not a live musician so I can't speak for how well it performs on stage, but I expect it would shine there as well. I bought mine specifically as a part of an operating studio, and it has become one of my primary workstations because of it's versatility and the ability to craft my own sounds without much effort. I would've liked a little better connectivity in the back for input/output but I have a dedicated mixer setup for sampling and recording directly to the keyboard. I look forward to watching more of your work.

    Always loved the feel of the MPC sequencer and have moved from using a DAW with workstation, to modules / controller with standalone sequencer, to everything in the box and back to DAW with sequencer. For some reason, I can't get the MPC Key 61 to slave to PT. It's such a basic function.

    This is nice! Considering getting one for myself though I wondering about a couple of things which you may or may not be able to answer. I have no experience with any of the MPC boxes. Should I familiarize myself with a current MPC or is the Key 61 the best instrument for a novice? Also, what has been the feedback when folks use this as a live performance instrument, especially for looping?

  • @paolomoretti9291

    @paolomoretti9291

    It's no good if you're a pure keyboard player: for live performances: it takes even 5-6 sec to switch from one patch/project to another, so if you have to quickly change sound during a song you're screwed. The looper works but it's pretty basic, it lacks features someone who's really into looping would want. The sounds are good. but I sent it back for the first reason and because Tefty has been too good about the keyboard, it sucks: it's noisy and shorter than a "normal" one. My thumb was often falling outside the keys. It's not aimed to real keyboard players, get it if you want to make beats not if you wanna play.

    @@teftymusictech one question i DO have that you can answer either in the vs vid or in another one about the key61 (or just here) is i know on the fantom you can strum/roll chords. Is there anyway to strum chords on the key61. I suck at playing chords because of my balance with my disability so i use my launch key or my keystep37 to get around this. i haven't seen anyone do it on the key61.

    Been loving it! My new favorite MPC. And yeah, AIR Flavor Pro and MiniD are paid plugins 😬 Which means they have to be activated etc etc. You get three activations so you could have three MPCs loaded up with the plugins. I’ll talk more about it on my official review for the Key 61.

    ive had the 61 for about a month. Overall i really like it but one thing i cant figure out is the polyphony? It’s not listed or mentioned any where. And i definitely have issues with sounds cutting out. There are several choir sounds that when played.. using the sustain pedal, half of the notes will cut out. Ive tried piecing together a simple loop consisting of a few drums and a piano.. then i go to add some simple strings.. and as im playing.. notes are cutting out. really frustrating. anyone else experienced this or have an idea as to why this is happening?

  • @khaossian76

    Polyphony on the Key 61 seems to be limited by RAM and Processing power (it's a computer first, musical instrument second). I've had some issues with note drops, and the best solution I've been able to come up with is using the keyboard in tandem with MPC 2 on the PC, that allows my PC to process the audio and I have far more resources for processing the effects (not limited to the tiny amount of memory that is built into the unit, and much more powerful processer). If you've got a halfway decent PC, just download the software and the USB driver and plug the keyboard into a USB port, and (very important to not create lag) set the MPC key 61 as the playback unit for your sound unless you already have a professional sound setup for your PC. Hope that helps just a bit. Cheers

    I believe it’s 128 note! I have a horrible bug with sustain pedal. It either works or doesn’t. It also sometimes switches to hold when sustain pedal is released. Only way that fixes this I’ve found is to unplug the sustain pedal then when machine is on. Every time I power down this bug appears. Hope that helps

    Oh lord, how can you say it loads fast when it's slow as a turtle? Seriously, those people who complain are potential users of the brand and have been since the first "music production center" (the new era of products), experienced users of Akai professional products. They say that this machine is slow with the SD card because it takes a long time with the short transfer rate, it has a low quality reader, it is also a machine that is still not optimized, this machine has 4GB of ram and a processor that can support more data transfer speed, but AKAI does not do things well, it leaves things for the future and yes, it is a bit annoying that a machine that costs a lot of money is a bit slower than a 2020 iPad Air. Akai MPC key 61 takes about half a century to turn on completely to be able to work on your songs, it's like a slow computer from 2010, seriously and it's a shame, because it has so much power, it has an acceptable processor to make better optimizations in the system and it has a generous ram that provides a lot of memory retention. THE SAME RAM OF A MIDDLE-RANGE IPAD. So Akai has to improve and it must be said with all the sincere words for constructive criticism, with the intention of improving and achieving a more versatile machine, the MPCs are really all slow and are very annoying to work on some things, they are expensive and that it's a problem. Thanks for the video.

    The keys are much shorter and heavier to play, than on a Kronos. Why? Whatever chord sequences I could do before, now become a HUGE problem. This instrument limits keyboard playing severely. I sent it back. Sounds are completely unbalanced volume - wise. Solina, for example, has a good volume. Change to piano or bass and you hear hardly anything. Very, very poor. I have NEVER, EVER played an "instrument" so poorly designed. G- sharp sounded 5x LOUDER than the other keys. I'm getting the Live2 instead. Will I be disappointed again? I fondly remember my S-950. Was that a dream?
