Exploring the Hammond S6 at the Museum of Making Music

The Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California and its Manager of Artifacts and Exhibitions, Jonathan Piper, provides a behind the scenes look at an exceptional artifact, a 1956 Hammond S6 chord organ. As part of the permanent collection in the museum, the S6 marked the introduction of a percussion feature, giving this instrument a particularly dynamic sound. Jonathan explains how the S6 and its predecessors in Hammond’s chord organ line operate as well as the unique marketing campaign Hammond pioneered in this artifact preview.

Although I am very fond of playing traditional standards on my 100% never serviced but 100% operational and hum free- 1955 S6 Chord organ, I also love playing a no holds barred searing Miles Davis trumpet on it's keys. And I did a *very simple 2 wire mod to my 55' S6* (bypass-able with a simple SPDT switch) which turns the chord buttons into the... heaviest, meanest, most thunderous grindingest, but smoothest, but growliest, palm muted, metal overdriven distortion YOU'VE NEVER HEARD!!It *BLACK SABBATH ADDING MACHINE!!* *By simply disconnecting the output wire from the chord buttons at its tie into the main amplifier (which happens to be exactly at the AUX IN/OUT rca jack on the rear of the organ), and moving this wire back one step in the preamp chain to the INPUT GRID of the PEDAL'S PREAMP* That's it! I swear to you on my mighty little organ...anyway, I swear to you that you will never regret tracking down and buying a Hammond S Chord Organ if you do this mod. I clearly lay out the mod on my ORGANFORUM do'com site. I am also paulj0557 on that site. NOTE- YOU CLEAN THE BUTTON CONTACTS ON A HAMMOND CHORD ORGAN BY VIGOROUSLY SLIDING THE RECESSED *_LEVER BACK AND FORTH_* THAT IS LOCATED UNDERNEATH THE KEY DESK, DIRECTLY UNDER THE CHORD BUTTONS. THE S6'S SOUND BEST WITH REVERB. THE HAMMOND 3-SPRING "NECKLACE REVERB" IS THE BEST OF THEM ALL. Unfortunately many of my fellow guitar players have been turning the ALREADY SPECIAL *AO-35 and AO-44 REVERB AMPLIFIERS* into mediocre guitar amps! For crying out loud guys, all you have to do is use the AO reverb amp as a slave amp! It operates off of the organ's, or any other amp's, speaker terminals. So you can take say, an old 2-3 watt guitar amp you made from a more common tube portable/table top radio-to-guitar amp. Or use a Pignose amp to drive it...get creative, but try your best to find the original necklace reverb springs in the meantime...you already've got the amp right? So be patient...there are plenty of orphaned spring necklaces out there theoretically. If not, you *can use any 'for tube amp'-reverb tank springs.* GOOD LUCK AND SAVE THE ORGANS, THERE WILL BE NO MORE MADE (UNLIKE GUITAR AMPS! AND GUITARS). I've been a guitar player/amp builder for 42 years, and an organ player/organ rescuer only 23.
