Exploring the ECU hardware and testing - Part 1
This video explains the ECU circuit board and demonstrates the way of crank and cam signal simulation to run the ECU and perform the different testing.
The engine ECU controls the injection of the fuel to the engine and the timing of the spark to ignite it. It determines the position of the rotation using a Crankshaft Position Sensor so that the injectors and ignition system are activated at precisely the correct time. It uses also number of sensor to read the status of the engine in order to run the engine at optimum performance.
The input to the ECU includes the following sensors:
Crank Position Sensor
Cam Position Sensor
Knock Sensor
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
Manifold Absolute Pressure or MAP Sensor
Mass Air Flow or MAF Sensor
Oxygen/O2/Lambda Sensor
Fuel Pressure Sensor
Engine Speed Sensor
Throttle Position Sensor
The output from the ECU includes the following devices:
Injectors
Throttle body control
Ignition coil
Load relay output
Malfunction lamp
Fuel pump
Idle control

This is a wonderful explanation and demonstration. You have demystified the inner workings of an ECU for me with the clear diagram shown and by pointing out the components on the real hardware. You also have an excellent method of explanation and teaching. Thank you.

I found an exploded capacitor in mine. At this point, I have to guess it was one of two used as smoothing capacitors, mabe even a backup. Someone had replaced two of them and reversed polarity on one. It was a low voltage cap. As it didnt affect anything, my guess is it might be for OBD2 power supply or something none critical.

i do have a question, when you are simulating cam and crank signals, i know that before the pcm will work the injectors and ignition, it will be looking for specific patterns of the crank and cam, and how they are synced. how are you accomplishing this/ THANK YOU.

  • @saudautomation

    @saudautomation

    Жыл бұрын

Hi, Your point is very valid and correct, in fact what I think in this type of simulation the ECU hardware and program is just reacting to the input signal and not genarating timed output, it keeps trying to adjust the output all the time , this semulation signal is at low RPM and the ECU is not fully functioning and in fact this helping us just to get the output and check the ECU respond, not only that but we can get the injector and ignition output only by providing the crank signal alone without cam signal and also it is giving the output eventhogh the immobilizer is not disabled, I know if you use a semulation device like MST 9000 the ECU generates more timed output signal.

You are very welcome, There is different ways to deal with this, but first step don't forget to try start by spare key if you have. 1-Try to reset the ECU, by erasing the eeprom data you will need at least some eeprom programmer to do this, then after that you need to register the key again by following key registration procedures you can serch for the procedure forms the web based on your car modle. 2-If you suspect the ECU is defictive, then you can try to clone the eeprom on new ECU, just by removing the eeprom (this is ic with 8 pins) from faulty ECU and use it to replace the same eeprom at new ECU. 3- try to do immobilizer off or delete but you will need programmer and some computer application to do this. All the best

  • @saudautomation

Hi, Depending on the failure mode and fault different troubleshooting approach and technique can be flawed, I for example the complete unit is dead and not responding then I can start to check the supply voltage and the healthness of main microcontroller, but if two or three outputs are not working then I check what is the common component meeting them and replace if required, If one output is no working I start tracing from that output pin going down I keep checking all the components on the way until I get the faulty one. Some test I need to keep the unit off powered and sometime it should be powered on depending.

hi, from ECU's connection diagram in your video, i didn't see connection from immobilizer, in many car equipped with immo, if we try to turn on / ignition the car with 'foreign' key, the car will not send data from immo to ECU, so the car will not start. Is that true? or you have the different opinion, please explain it to me..thanks

  • @saudautomation

    @saudautomation

    4 жыл бұрын

Hi, Thanks for the good point. The inputs provided in the diagram was example of basic parameters to ECU as simplified schetch only. Indeed you are right immobilizer system is one of inputs to ECU this can be external transponder ECU in some designs or integrated in the ECU, if non authorized key used then received security code will mismatch to the one saved in ECU eeprom and engine won't start. In fact there is other inputs also like status of gear if neutral or park, brake padle pressed status, IGF for ignition feedback in some cases.

Hi, thanks for feedback. Yes the immobilizer part is challengeable not only BMW but most of other cars, some time like number of Toyota ECU's they require ignitor confirmation feadback (IGF) signal and ECU will not also respond without it. All this permissives signals sometime they make difference and sometime not.

I just read what you wrote about ignitor confirmation...and wondered if it's happening here.? Car is 2000, so twenty years old, maybe they didn't have it then? Anyway... intermittent behaviors are always hardest, aren't they, lol?! Maybe has to do with 5v being ok on air temp sensor but 12v is read on mass air sensor and also on coolant temp sensor?! Seems sensors would all be 5v? Such an interesting world...lol.

I have doubt that i am using a obd scanner (ELM327) for diagnostics of car. Which can send errors to my mobile via bluetooth. its a very cheap one and i don't know whether the acuracy of its operation. The question is. Will it affect to ECU Put into dawn or lower performance.

No worries technically the ECU is not affected by the connected scanner unless the change is commanded by the scanner operator or it can be ECU hacking activity, regardles cheap or expensive scanner.

Hi, I believe you can discuss with your dealer about this, Repairing is normally possible but depending on the failure so not every fault is repairable, as long you already ordered new ECU then that's fine always new ECU is more reliable at all the cases compared to repaird one.

@@saudautomation Understood. I have sourced a used ECM that will make my truck run smoothly, but it is for a 6 cyl version of my 4 cylinder engine. I put it in today, and it ran pretty well (they both use inline Fuel Injection pumps, so I don't have to worry about 6 vs 4 cylinders). The boards and pinout are the same, but with the replacement ECM in, it runs at about twice the speed it should at idle (I think the gear that the speed sensor senses is a different size). I don't have Schematics, but I do have all the pinout and the functions of each connector pin. Could I correspond with you to see if I could find a way to solve my problem? Perhaps by email? I have recently purchased a power supply, oscilloscope, and have a diesel engine simulator arriving soon. Thx!!

Alaikum Aslaam, eeprom you can find it normally close to the microcontroller it's 8 pins ic with part number it can be either 93Cxx, 24cxx, LRxx or RAxx ... etc. Not all ECU's using external eeprom sometime this is embedded in the microcontroller.

Hi, Good and important question, In fact most ECU circuit implement diode protection at power input, this with different arengment, sometimes the diode is just connected in reverse so anode to ground therfore if battery power was reversed heavy current pass across the diode and fuse blow. Sometimes the diode is connected forward direction to just block the reverse power also some circuits implements 2 back to back diodes, you can see sometimes mosfet is used to block the reverse power. Anyway if the fuse was slow to blow the reverse power will negtivly afect the ECU circuit, diodes and electric capacitors plus regulator might fail but if the reverse voltage spike reaches the microcontroller or other IC's then for sure microcontroller chip cannot tolerate that most of time and just fail.

  • @saudautomation

Depending on the failure , is it the ECU not responding and failed totally, at least are you hearing the fuel pump starting after ignition on this can be one indication of ECU status , are you getting the 12 volt reaching the ECU normal after the power reversing, is it blowing the fuse, the protection diode will be close to the 12 B+ input pin. Anyway different posebilites can be there you need to check.
