Exploring the Dark Side of Chicago's Neighborhoods

Top 10 Most Dangerous Neighborhoods in Chicago.
Chicago, Illinois is an amazing city, I go there every couple of years. Great people, great pizza, and a breathtaking skyline. The downside is, it has some places that should be avoided at all costs.
Today we will look at the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago. If you live there you already know where these are, if you are from out of town and going to see a Bears or White Sox game, this list might stop you from making a wrong turn that could endanger your life.
A couple of disclaimers. We are looking at the entire metro area, not just the city of Chicago, we are also going by violent crime stats published by the FBI. We aren’t going by reputation, legend, or history. I promise locals will be in the comment section complaining about what they think is the most dangerous. We do this because if you ask 100 different locals to make a list of the most dangerous places, you will get 100 different lists. We also use the location’s actual name so you can find it on a map if you want to look it up.

They eventually will gentrify these areas in the way they got rid of the GREENS and the rest of the projects. It just matter of time. Believe me 250,000 for something 10 min from the lake 20 min from downtown close to transportation is not expensive. I grew up in HUMBOLDT PARK but lived all over the city. Humboldt park now where it used to be cheap its half a mil and better now

I've driven through 9 of these areas in my life, almost always daytime. This list is pretty accurate. Derrick Rose, former NBA MVP of the Chicago Bulls is from Englewood. These neighborhoods can get really dangerous at night, especially hot summer nights when everyone is outside. Daytime, if you just drive on the main roads and mind your own business, is okay.

I’m someone that grew up on the south side of Chicago and still works in all these neighborhoods and traveling through out the day going from one to another. I’ve been a paramedic and now work in medical equipment and deal with a variety of different people from all backgrounds both good and bad in all these neighborhoods. Best piece of advice keep your head up and on a swivel and don’t be a target. Try to do your business early in the day before 1pm. I’ve never had a problem myself but their are times everyday you think something might pop off. Pay attention and do what you need to do to get the jobs done and get out swiftly. My views of the places I feel warrant the most caution: Roseland Englewood K Town Ford Heights is rough too

BOTY has good stats because you know not to go there. Federal agent was shot in the head a couple years, cops got shot by rifles sitting in a surveillance van also. The "Jungle” was based on BOTY. Gangbangers dont use pistols…they use AR15s and AKs. Only place in Chicago where a gangbanger was shot in front of a Catholic church by an AK in the head. Chicagoans know not to go there because of the crime. The main gang in BOTY is so notorious that they are the only gang in Chicago that does not swear allegiance to neither of the main 2 gang branches, Folks or People they are “Renegade”.

Madison and Pulaski to Central Park and Polk to 16th and lawndale is most likely the most dangerous part in the city there’s more shootings in that area of west Garfield to east Garfield park then anywhere it’s a total kill zone ran by 4chs Tvls, New breeds, Uvls, and Gds

    10. Chatham 9. South Shore 8. Riverdale 7. West Englewood 6. Grand Crossing 5. North Lawndale 4. Englewood 3. East Garfield Park 2. Washington Park 1. West Garfield As accurate as this list is, I think everyone should look at a map, draw a line around all the bad neighborhoods, then look at the entire (metro) map of Chicago and see that the city as a whole really isn't that bad. Furthermore, most of the violent crime happens to people who are living that kind of life. Average blue and white collar people aren't (edit: directly) affected. These neighborhoods have great culture and like he said they produce alot of great talent in alot of areas. Chicago is a great city and is personally my favorite city in America. Just saying all of this for those that didn't listen to Briggs last comment in this video.

But as I grew up it became more and more safe, until ten years ago. We got my dad out of there because I just feel it isn’t safe for an elderly man. Especially when he has to park on the street and walk a block or more to stores etc...he’s safe in Asheville , North Carolina- which happens to be one of the best cities to move to in 2022!

I agree 100% with your list regarding Chicago. As a resident, born and raised, I do have to ask this question though: why concentrate on the outcome but not the problem that caused the issue? I haven't seen anything from any forums focus on the Redlining, Segregation and Seclusion that caused the South and West sides to be this way! And for your info, the reason the South Side is mentioned so much is because the South Side is 3x bigger than the West Side and the population is greater. Thank you for your work and keep up the good work!

I grew up in South Shore, There are some big, beautiful mansions there. However, starting in the mid-1960's, the neighborhood began to change, and most of its population fled to other parts. We went to the Gold Coast, thank goodness. The last time I was there and drove around my childhood home and its nearby biz district, every single store had security gates, making it all look very ghetto. It was a very sad sight to see. The freakin' Dim. mayors after Daley, steadily RUINED a beautiful city. The last one was the WORST. It turns out she was paid to do it. grrrrrr.......

This is absolutely right about Riverdale I have been a victim of crime at the 3th of December. I was doing Uber around 12am when I received a request to pick up two young black men from 87th around there, to drop them off at Riverdale. Once we got to the final destination I pulled up to drop them and one of them opened the door like he was getting off the car, when suddenly the other guy struck the handgun to my face and pointed me gun told me to take off inside the car that goes to fast that I couldn't understood what was going on, I left all my stuff with the gun face to my head the other guy said shoot him and let go, fortunately a miracle was made, and my life was kept safe. My car has been hijacked with everything like phone, wallet and my debit cards. Thanks God my life was kept safe and I still alive.

If you have kids and want to be near public transportation, quieter, and low crime, your options are basically Lincoln Park (especially Park West--which is actually the part of Lincoln Park furthest to the East haha), Ravenswood, and Lincoln Square. Most of the other safer areas have a LOT of younger college aged kids acting ridiculous all weekend.

Once I fell asleep on the L and when I woke up I was the only white guy and almost everyone was staring at me. The other time I had to stop for gas. I felt unsafe and only put in a few $$ and took off even this I needed to use the restroom really bad. Other than that I stayed in my own neck of the woods and never really felt unsafe. There is one major issue with your breakdown here... And it's part of the bad reputation that large cities get... The violent crimes in Chicago tend to be targeted. Meaning that you aren't likely to be randomly mugged or attacked by going to/through those "bad" neighborhoods. The crimes tend to happen to gang members or people who gang members know and don't like. Random violence is far more likely in affluent places.
