I lived up the hill from that place from 1964 to 1980. My folks worked there and we lived on the grounds. I find it funny those kids were too afraid to go down the tunnels. Me and my friends went down all those tunnels very frequently. Also used to sit on the catwalk of the water tower, what a view it was. That area was fun to run around. lots of hiking in the woods, more freedom than what kids have today. It's sad to see that part of history disappear. When I was last down there a year and a half ago, they were in the process of tearing buildings down and moving houses out. The house I used to live in was still in place, but I'm sure not for long. All I have left are some pictures, and memories.

The bootcamp was like the movie full metal jacket... watch full metal jacket youll get a slight idea of what youth bootcamp in custer was like only we had 2 drill instructors plus and was longer and we didnt get guns juvie boot camp was 120 days plus weeks of holding in arival and professing marine bootcamp is only 3 months.. our juvie bootcamp was ran bye real marines... my luitentant was 52 and wanted to help kids change 😂 he was a former paris island drill instructor and taught drill instructor school. Im no marine but i prromise you those first groups of kids in custer before it went soft are probly more highly trained regarding bootcamp then actual marines... place was nutttttts the staff would even tell us we had it worse then actual marines

The kids there acted just like marines we slept at position of attention....marched where ever we went in 3 squads to cadence.... made our beds bye the numbers with counts and shouts and start overs that lasted hours.. we never broke the position of attention... it was stricttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt as a matter if fact it was damnn squared away i swear we were 14 to 18 I laugh at the bootcamp vids of real miltary not even close apsoloute weak sauce the intensity of custer youth bootcamp was a 11 outta 10 would be shut down in a hour today ... ide say watching the bootcamp videos I see on line ide say intensity is bout a 3 or 4... not taking shots here its truth... Custer youth bootcamp was something else man like fuckin special forces training on roids with no real checks or balances no cameras they simply got away with torturing kids induction week was 30 kids squished together in a mob head dwn into a billet.. theyd have 15 drill instructors on rotation it was nutso they rannnnnnnnnn theeeeee shittttt outtta us for dayyyyyyyys even blink the whole platoons getting there entire beds n footlockers destroyed we get msrched out to run in place pushups up dwn up dwn screammmmmmmed at spit in eyes.... up close very personal. Then we go make beds tell chow... eat chow standing up holding trays telll kids pass out from shaking.. up dwn up dwn bed at 930... up at 530 slamming trash cans at uss flipping lights on screamming as loud as mean as posssible wakeeeeeee thereeeree fuckkkkkkk uppppppppppp tooo slow get back.. sound offffffffff.... louderrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr thats 100 percent not giving it justice
