Exploring the ABANDONED Pennsylvania TROLLEY GRAVEYARD

I learned about the Pennsylvania trolley graveyard more than 15 years ago when I was starting exploring abandoned places in the northern US states. But I didn't make the journey to see them in person until a super hot day in August 2020. Here's my tour of the legendary trolley graveyard.

Last November, the whole property (and all the cars) were sold to a scrapper. Most of the cars (all but a few of the ones outside) are called PCC cars. The type was developed in 1936 to design a standardized, modernized, streetcar. Most ran until the ‘50s, with the ones in Los Angeles surviving in service until 1963. Here is a list of all the cars there that were either sold to museums or private collectors, or were outright scrapped. I saw the news last year when traffic to this video spiked. The cars haven’t moved according to the latest satellite imagery but I’m guessing work will begin after winter. How did you come up with the list?

@@chrisluckhardt I thought I replied with a url to the database I used, but apparently KZread deleted it. It’s called PNAERC (Preserved North American Electric Railway Cars).

@@RyansColoradoRailProductions KZread auto-blocks URLs in comments now, so I didn't see it. But searched the acronym and discovered it's the Roller Coaster Database (RCDB) of electric rail cars! Amazing resource, thanks for sharing!

I was there on that path just a few years ago but sadly didn’t know how to find the trains. It was summer so the trees were very full and it was hard to see anything beyond them. Unfortunately it was also too close to dark to go exploring off the path alone, my partners chickened out. 🤣 I wish I had seen this video beforehand, I was probably so close!!!

You’re going to hate me when I tell you just keep going until it ends. 😅 But I understand the creepiness factor because even I was on full sensory mode while down there with the trains and gunshots!

I mention in the video that I intended to go here before 2010 but didn’t get around to it. Would’ve been amazing to see the trolleys without the graffiti. I suppose it’s the new “Graffiti Highway”.

Correction Chris, they are not trains....they're trolley cars or street cars. The exception are those high floor Chicago subway cars that were made using parts from old Chicago PCC trolleys. And I must say I like your Canadian accent. Did you happen to get the car number of the 1949 Red Arrow {Philadelphia Suburban} car that you boarded at 5:53 on the time bar. You showed the interior above the windshield at 6:05, but I couldn't see the car number. Man, these ads that pop up every minute or two are really annoying. The ticks and other insects must have had a great time with you. And frankly, it's dangerous to climb around in equipment in that deteriorated condition. They've been exposed to the weather for decades. Doing it alone is especially risky and unadvisable.. It could be likely to have unfortunate consequences. If you got hurt, who would help you? Let's hope there is working cell service there for emergencies. At 11:20, that's not a driver's seat. It's the motorman's cab. The conductor collects fares or opens/closes doors. The conductor doesn't operate vehicles. The motorman operates these cars. You've got lots to learn before narrating a video like this. It might interest you to know that a scrap dealer has just bought everything at the Windber site and by year's end it will be cut up. That's to give museums and collectors time to buy things such as spare parts. There are a few vintage cars inside of the shop building that should go to museums. railfan.com/famous-trolley-graveyard-sold-to-scrapper/

Let's see if I can respond to the running commentary lol. Calling them "train cars" is a weird linguistic habit I picked up from my British mother. But the title and description accurately refers to them as trolleys. Subway...trolley...tram...train...they were all train cars to her and I haven't shaken off her nomenclature lol. You can kill the ads with KZread Premium - it's 100% worth it. The danger here is VERY minimal compared to some places I've explored (look for my Soviet space shuttle videos). And it's interesting to learn about the scrap dealer sale! I'll have to check the news for more info.
