Exploring the abandoned and allegedly haunted Codorus Furnace and Iron Masters House, York County PA

Ойын-сауық

The history of the Codorus Furnace(aka Bennet's Forge, Hellam Iron Works, Hellam Forge) and its contribution to the revolutionary war and the founding of our nation. This forge was built in 1765 and ceased operation in 1850.
The forge was owned by several prominent figures in the founding of York County and the United States.
This property is listed in the Top 10 haunted places in York County by several paranormal groups. I spoke to the owner of the property who lived there for 40yrs and he related several instances to me which I cover in the video.
My original plan was to request permission from the owner to stay over night in the Ironmaster's House and release this video this past Halloween but unfortunately I ran out of time and couldn't schedule it.
All music: Composed and recorded by me.

    It would be cool if they incorporated the ruins down at creek level into the furnace park. They'd clean up nice. Nice work!

    I live 6 miles from the Codorus Furnace. Been there many times and wondered how old the house on the corner of the sharp bend in the road was and if had anything to do with the Codorus Furnace. I knew there used to be buildings up behind the furnace and that those were the only buildings associated with the furnace. Your video and research are fantastic. Back in 2019 the Conservation Society of York County held a tour at the Codorus Furnace and the Wills one room school house. I have a video I did for them on my channel. I worked with the president Bob Bair who at that time was in charge. I know he said he was going to be stepping down from that position. He was also a farmer and head of one if the Graunget groups in York as well. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

    In your conversations with the previous owner did they ever mention anything about the location of the quarry where at least for part of it's history the iron ore came from? I've read that came from the Grubb quarries in Lancaster County but then as some point they had to switch to ore from a location close to where the furnace complex was. There is a spot up the hill which could have been the quarry based upon the aerial imagery.

  • @runningintohistory

    @runningintohistory

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question! The Grubb quarry was the primary supply. I will check my books again but when I was researching this video I did find mention of a quarry(actually pit) on the furnace property which was dug in 1866 but the furnace ceased operation in 1850. The flint operation down below didn't start up until 1884 but only lasted a few months before it was washed away. So I'm not sure what they were doing with that "rock ore" quarry in 1866.

    Another thing: Theres the whole local urban legend of 'The Seven Gates of Hell'. Now, that specific story happens to be totally made-up. I researched the whole thing some time ago, including some personal acquaintances that helped debunk it. But there was a 'Toad Road that went from Trout Run Road down to the flint mill area. And this was a wild, mysterious area - the whole Kondor lumber tract. . . very interesting place. . .

  • @runningintohistory

    Definitely a fascinating area. I reference the seven gates legend in the intro to part 2 of this but yeah no evidence of it being true. Toad Rd has also always fascinated me and I have been wanting to dig into it more. Does not show on any of the old maps back to the 1821 Small & Wagner map at least.

    I helped restore the Codorus Furnace in the early 1970's. Mrs Jean Hoke and Margo Atwood facilitated that cleaning and restoration, during their tenure at the York County Historical Society. I can tell you ,"as I grew up in that area," that there are no spirits on that property. Hell, we used to camp out near there on Trout Run road, closed since the flood of 72. There used to be a bronze plack on the furnace showing the names of the masons and others who helped repoint the stones and clean up the property, but it was pryed off by some creeps. The iron masters house, just up the road, is most likely inhabited by raccoons, mice, and other critters, but spirits? Not likely, but hey to each their own.

    Very interesting that your drone footage shows a newer metal roof on the back of the house. I sure hope the new owner fixes it up, but historically appropriate. I'd be OK with a full metal roof, to that regard, BTW.
