Exploring SS United States Series - Part One

Ойын-сауық

Exploring the SS United States Part One
Part One is the start of a 4 or 5 part series on this magnificent ocean liner known as the SS United States. The sad and empty look of this once historical and well known ocean liner has been sitting in a state of decay for over 20 years. With its maiden voyage in 1952, it only lasted 17 years before airlines became the more popular way to travel overseas. However, Crystal Cruise lines might invest in this sad ocean liner and it might once sail again. Currently in Philadelphia, I walked the massive 990 foot long vessel, with permission, to give you a more in depth look of what the SS united States looks like inside. Make sure you stay with me as I will have Part Two out next week. Enjoy

Sometime between 70/72 when I was serving on my first ship USS Dahlgren DLG-12 I was home ported out of Norfolk at the D&S piers (Destroyer & Submarine) and remember the SS United States being brought in to Norfolk after her retirement. It was quit the big deal when she passed us at the D&S piers and there was a bit of a ceremony involved. I remember there were boats with water cannons in attendance blowing their ships horns and all. I remember how blown away I was by her size as she passed us at the D&S piers and am glad I had the opportunity to witness a bit of history. It was a sight I will never forget...

I had the privilege of getting to tour the ship back in 2000 when a friend of mine was doing a documentary on the ship. Amazing to see how it looks today and honestly not a whole bit different from 16 years ago. I remember the slick floor with all the oil on it almost feel there and the smell was something else as well. Look forward to more videos.

From what I understand, this ship was so well-built, the superstructure rust and corrosion prevention initiatives used when she was built will prevent the interior from degrading for decades. If the exterior can be rescued and treated this would make solid bones to put some new meat on. Expensive to refurbish certainly, but boy, what a project to highlight US maritime prowess...

@@Chaddy14 Yep, it just needs someone or consortium with shedloads of $$$ to rescue and modernise this great vessel. She would be full to the brim with passengers every sailing you can bet. I'm disappointed that she has been allowed to sit neglected. Her bones are fine, just needs someone with the will and the $$$. We sailed from England to Australia on her sister ship SS America in 1973, although by then she was known as "Australis". She is sadly no more, and many would be loathe to see the "United States" befall a similar fate.

Steve, I hadn't known that the S.S. United States was so important to you. I'm really glad for you that you finally got to go aboard. I think of this phenomenal ship as a troop transport that could be used as an ocean liner rather than as an ocean liner that could be used as a troop transport. I've read that the S.S. United States was designed so she could be turned into a troop transport in only 48 hours. Wow! This ship, in various forms, had been in the mind of William Gibbs since the early 1900's yet he never made a crossing on the United States.

I recall reading that one of the features that gave the Queen Mary some protection against u-boats during WWII was the Queen Mary's great speed, around 31 mph. So if the SS United States can go 40 or even 50 mph, that's amazing. I know that our aircraft carriers can go very fast (classified speed), but they have almost unlimited, nuclear power.

  • @qe2836

    @qe2836

    8 жыл бұрын

+Jim H. Queen Mary took the "Blue Riband" Atlantic crossing record in 1938 with an average speed of 30.99 knots = 35.67 mph. SS US overtook that record in 1952 with an average speed of 34.51 knots = 39.72 mph using only 2/3 of her power. (They have to go against the Gulf stream so the top speed must be higher). The highest measured speed for the US was over 38 knots = 44 mph and she could likely go faster.

Even the Seawise Giant, probably the largest ship ever built, which weighed a mind numbing 650,000 tons when fully loaded (12 times more than the SS United States!), "only" had a 36 ton anchor. The naster chillers would be in the engine room but by the time the chilled air travelled all the awy up to the passenger areas it would be warmer. So these units eould chill the air down again to a lower temperatrure I think. In modern AC systems they have devices called FCU's (Fan Coil Units), which would do a similar job. The main chillers on the roof and the FCU's in office areas. I think the 'FSD' is possibly 'Fan Service Distribution'. If i'm worong someone please holla! FANTASTIC channel liked and sub'd! 7:41 that woud go down to the 'chain locker'. She would have had MASSIVE anchor chains probably around 500 -700 feet long EACH! Those have to be stored somewhere when the anchors are up - there ya go! When anchor is on the sea bed this area would be mostly empty as all the chain would be over the side! UKRAINE AAARGH their safety standards over there are like "why you wear stupid mask - what is 'BESTOS' we are stong plenty tough we dont need sissy mask - we drink TANK OIL for lunch and chew on Uranium crackers!"

6:55 Anchor weighing a 1,000 Tons if not more! Considering the USS Nimitz anchor and chain of an aircraft carrier. One 90-foot shot of chain that weighs a total of 20,500 pounds. Twelve shots of chain collectively hold a 60,000-pound anchor. 306000-pound of chain and anchor only weigh in at 115 US tons.

Nice one. :) I await the remaining parts of this series with much interest. If they gutted her in Ukraine, I wonder why they did not take the engineering bits you show in the video? Not that I am complaining, but when you strip her down that far, it is odd to me that they leave just some bits behind. If all the internal structure is indeed aluminium, then that would not rust so will make her very solid in terms of the internal structure. This would also have saved a significant amount of weight of the overall vessel, so that no-doubt contributed to her impressive top speed of the day. If the outer hull is OK, and it's cleaned and painted, there might be hope yet for the old girl.

I think it would be cheaper to restore the engines. But the problem is management. No one has ever done anything to improve the ship. btw you can already do 3D images with a single camera. You just have to do two pictures (one for the left and one for the right eye) by sliding the camera some cm to the left/right and take shots. You then can mount the two images together into a singe 3D image. Or make a video by sliding the camera sideways or circle around an object and take two stills from the video. Freeware software to create 3D images from two shots: www.stereomaker.net/

Fascinating. What a shame if this isn't converted and refitted. I see it being turned to scrap. What is the explanation on the curvature, mid ships to bow? Was that designed in or just the way the ship rides and was expected to ride? It doesn't take much of an error to cause that type of problem. Go figure an error of one one hundred sixty eighth of an inch doesn't sound like much but after 168 feet there is a full one inch error. Thanks for the video.

They don't have to make it modernized that much. It is an original and is exempt like the PS Waverly and the SS jermiah o Brien. Even Queen Mary is original and not newly built so she could technically be resotred too and be used atleast for excursion to give people the feel of classic steam ocean liners but they don't want too. I'd rather have this ship as an original operational steamship doing small excursion and ofcourse to be used as a museum. The only bad part is the fact that not much of the ship is original and would have to be custom made but once again nobody cares and just want's to make profit of it rather than preserving history.

  • @ObamaTookMyCat

    7 жыл бұрын

same fate as Olympic, would have served as a troop transport, then when cunard and White star merged, and the Queen mary and Queen elizabeth were completed, they replaced all other ships in comparative role for both lines for transatlantic cruises. To add, simply, the great depression took a tole on cruise lines, so ships became expensive to operate, especially older ones like Olympic. So they were eventually removed from service, then retired, then scrapped. Olympic is REALLY lucky to last this long because she actually got hit by a torpedo on or before august 1919, but it failed to detonate, and they found this out by means of finding a crack and deformation in the hull below the waterline.

Would make a great artificial reef. Or scrapped and melted down for inclusion in the U. S.’s next overpriced warship. Unfortunately, that might be the thinking of most Americans. Likely most Americans have no idea that this once great ocean liner exists, let alone it’s history. And that is such a shame. Bringing back this ship to it’s 1952 glory could be a grass roots patriotic project that brings many of us back together and helps quell the divisiveness that has permeated our society for too long. Americans, it seems, are yearning for something to believe in again, a shared goal and common purpose, to bolster the spirit and pride that once made us proud to be Americans. What better project than this namesake of our country, the SS UNITED STATES.
