Steve, thank you so much for doing this exploration. I got to see this ship as a kid when she was docked in Norfolk. She still had a lot of her furnishings back then. It was amazing how much detail went into her fittings to ensure she was as fireproof as she could be. Even stripped out she is still a beautiful ship. I hope they decide to bring her back. She's still an engineering marvel.

Steve, the room you entered at 6:35 is the private First Class dining room that seated 43 people. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor frequently travelled on the United States and would use this room for most of the crossing. The would eat in the main First Class dining room on one night during their crossings. The Windsors used to travel on the Cunard Queens but the Duchess had a relative who worked for the United States Lines and there was an arrangement that the Duke and Duchess would travel the famous "Duck Suite" but were charged only minimum First Class fares and the fares, long after the Duke abdicated, were taken care of by Buckingham Palace. Talk about a great deal for the Duke and Duchess! Part of the arrangement was that the Windsor would attend some events, have their pictures taken, and speak to the press at the end of the crossing. I'd like to recommend "S.S. United States--The Story of America's Greatest Ocean Liner" by William H. Miller, published by W.W. Norton & Company, 1991, ISBN 0-393-03030-X. Great stories and great black-and-white pictures.

There are many videos posted on the big U.but yours is the best, I made a Westbound crossing in March of 1968. The North Atlantic can be dicey in sept she wasn't rolling so much but was pitching so bad the props would come out of the water, when they went back the ship would shudder and shake. The ropes were up for most of the crossing. Thanks for posting

Very good series! After seeing so many videos on the Titanic, I was curious if there was not more footage and still shots available of it's heyday to kindly alter back and forth to compare original looks with your modern footage and stills. This would probably require less explanation when viewing. Just a thought. Thanks for what you've posted.

Hey I really appreciate these videos I was on this ship as a four year old and I had a picture of myself in the dining room . it's really amazing all that steel and Equipment gone to waste. Great to have all these visual images of such an amazing piece of equipment as that ship

i love the fact that not even the walls were spared when this thing was stripped... all to look at now is the aircraft frame primer colored walls, some of which still have the original builders cut marks and frame numbers spray painted on them! I personally think that is cooler than anything else, because it shows that after all the ship has been through, that has not changed from the 50s.

7:13... the dumbwaiters ran from the kitchens on A Deck all the way up to the officers mess behind the officers cabins. On each level, Main, Upper, Promenade, Sun and officers area, they were surrounded by a pantry. This allowed the crew to deliver room service quickly. To the port was a service elevator to the same decks to to starboard a spiral staircase for crew to the same decks and down to B Deck too.

A quick note on the indoor pool. Unlike with cruise ships where pools are usually outdoors, on transatlantic ocean liners they were usually indoors. The North Atlantic is notorious for its generally unpleasant weather, even in the middle of summer. Outdoor pools would have gotten rather limited use. One of the few exceptions were the ships of the Italian Line that traveled on the more southern Mediterranean route.

Props are usually made of aluminum and stainless steel or nickel, aluminum, and bronze. These metals are less prone to corrosion since the props are in direct contact with salt water. One thing that wears on props is cavitation.which occurs when a prop is spinning quickly in the water. When the pressure of the water is reduced by the spin of the prop, bubbles are released which can erode the surface of the propeller. Nice video. Thanks for taking us through the ship.

I remember the very day I saw her laid up in Norfolk, VA. in about '83 or '84 BEFORE the auction. I was working for a company doing work at NOB Norfolk, VA. We drove right by her. The way I recalled it was the cool sculptured rear end with United States New York scripted in, and the rear movable portholes. If only I had known then what I do now. Just another few days on the job.

the props were Nickel Aluminum Bronze. Again built lightweight for speed and its actually TINY compared to say a TITANIC screw which were about 40 feet across! That screw is 18 feet diamater weighing in at 61 Tons. 7:03 those would have been dumb waiters to bring food up to the ballroom as small meals were probably served there, cooked below in the galleys. If you followed the shaft down it would come out possibly to the kitchens lower down in the ship. 8:11 an elevator cannot drop even if you cut the cables! They have multiple safety devices, like ratchet gear that locks into teeth as it goes up and down repease by the hoist cable. It the cable breaks those teeth lock into notches on the lift rails. Also friction brakes would be locked on unless power was on, so you are safe! Superb as ever buddy

Okay in case the names of the items didn’t make it into the video here are some of them. First is the breakwater that directs the waves off the deck. The anchor hoist is the windlass. The bridge position you were at is the flying bridge. The cabin near the bridge was the captain’s at sea cabin. You didn’t mention it but he probably had an in port cabin that was more opulent but unless you have the architectural drawings you likely wouldn’t know it’s location. I got a little elated upon seeing it but I was glad to see there was at least one propeller left. As long as there’s one you can get the original dimensions off it to recreate the others. With the original you’ll likely be able to achieve the same speeds as the original. Something that concerns me is a corporation buying it from the conservatorship. There have been so many that bought it only to back out and nearly scrapped it. Leasing to start out is fine but they should have language in the sales contract that states that the ship shall revert back to the conservator. Another consideration is that any potential buyer shall provide surface and paint installation while they have ownership. If there’s some interest in buying it they could at least contribute to upkeep to prevent it from deteriorating further. If a company fully restores it then they’ve illustrated they want to make it a viable asset. Then they could look at giving full ownership to them.

MrShobar I believe your wrong on that point, the government must approve materials to be used. Have you ever notice a UL or CSA approval on items you buy, they are basically government contractors approving different items for sale and use the same type of approval Asbestos and or LED would have needed.

When did the ship take it's last cruise & to where? the level of deterioration is unreal, I also wonder why they gutted the ship what was the reason? I also think at some point & I hate see it but I bet it get's sold for scrap & towed to be broken up. Here in the town where I live there's an old Great Lakes cruise ship that started to get restored & now the interest in it is dead, who know's what will happen to it.

+72mustangfb Not sure on where it went for it last voyage but it was gutted when they did the asbestos removal. All interior furnishes were auctioned off in the 1980s

+72mustangfb I just checked in the book "S.S. United States--the Story of America's Greatest Ocean Liner" by William H. Miller. The liner sailed from New York on October 25, 1969, going "...to Bremerhaven via Le Havre and Southampton..." The ship returned to the U.S. early in the morning on November 7th then that night went to Newport News, Virginia, and was laid up. Withdrawal from service of the S.S. United States wasn't a complete surprise but it was sudden; reservation were being taken for a Christmas cruise to the Caribbean and for a 1970 cruise in the Pacific Ocean, cruises that never took place.

+TopDawg e it ended it voyages in 1969 due to ocean liners being less popular. Money was being spent on the airlines. Much faster across the ocean

The ship really needs to be restored for America. But no one has done a thing it. It has always sat idle. If you're interested to see the ship restored, Please join the mailing list at info@theubie.com Just mention SS United States. i'm not begging for money.. it needs organization and people.

It’s such a shame that this ship is totally neglected, the USA spends billions and billions on space exploration but is not able to look after the history of such a once beautiful ship as this is part of their merchant navy history.Look at the Queen Mary at long beach which ones was a ship from the British merchant navy now servicing a wonderful roll as a static ship and museum, something like this should be done to the SSUnited States and find a pier for her to be docked at right there where she used to dock in New York Shame shame US federal Government to let this happen to your own piece of history
