Exploring New Waters - Flint River Huntsville

Ойын-сауық

My brother, ‪@alabamafloats‬ , and I decided to explore a new section of the Flint River in Huntsville, Alabama. It was just under a 5-mile section from Hays Nature Preserve to Old Big Cove Road. There were a few trees down to navigate through/around and several splits/islands that made chosing a path somewhat tricky. But we got through and overall it was a great flaot (not for beginners).

Hey Billy! That's awesome! Congrats on getting started. My friend Mike from "Camping with a Stranger" just started last year and he's in his early 60's I think. If you have any questions let me know! Thanks for watching and have fun on the water!! :)

Glad y’all got through safely. The biggest mistake most people make on this section of the river is not going to the far right immediately after going under the bridge. It is blocked right now due to the flooding several weeks ago.

Thanks Jared! Yes, there were logs all the way across. I didn't paddle up to it since the left looked open. It wasn't bad, but there are so many splits after that it gets a little tricky. We want to do Old Big Cove to Hobbs Island Road next.

Went to the right side last week. Picked our way through some branches but doable. This section always a fun challenge!

Look like a good time for a day trip. I know what you mean about Separating from each other on the water especially when you don't know much about the water. I am glad you 2 was OK. All way fun to get out on the water for a Couple of hours. You take it easy buddy and thanks you for sharing.

That water looked nice. Like rivers around here though. Dang ole trees in swift current just aggravating as you know what. By the way did your brother catch anything?

Thanks, Thomas. Yes, those downed trees are aggravating. Fortunately we didn't have to actually crawl/drag over any. He caught a couple of small ones, but nothing major.

I need to to try that section. I’ve gone from Oscar Patterson to Hays NP. I do have to ask…..how cold is the water this time of year? I would be a little concerned with potential hypothermia if I fell in.

Hey Chris- this section can be tricky since no outfitter keeps it cleared...and it changes with every rain. The water is definitely cold enough you don't want to get wet, but on mild days you would probably be alright. Just don't wear anything cotton because it holds water. I always try to wear synthetic or dry-tec clothing. A change of clothes is not a bad idea, either, if you have space.

New water can be tricky! Have you ever paddled upstream from there? I’m wondering if the current would be to much for an upstream and back paddle

I have done the section above where I started and you probably would not make it far upstream. There's pretty good flow through most of the Flint River...which is what makes it such a great day trip. I have put in at Chickasaw Landing (Hobbs Island Road) and paddled downstream and back up, but only try it at low flows. You might have better luck at the Turker Creek boat ramp (2 miles below Chickasaw).

Do you encounter a lot of snakes

  • @SouthernPaddler

No, I don't. I keep and eye out while I'm on the bank or getting in/out, but once on the water I don't worry too much (unless I'm going under big limbs or next to rock walls). The only real concern is Moccasins. All other snakes quickly flee. Moccasins don't want any trouble either, but they seem to not get in a hurry about it. :)

It's definitely different from every other section I've seen. My brother and I want to do Old Big Cove to Hobbs Island Road next. I figure it to be about 6 miles. Have you done that one?
