Exploring my new neighborhood with my Sketchbook | Watercolor & Gouache Demo

Hello Art-Family!
For this video I wanted to do some sketches from around my beautiful new neighborhood here in Pittsburgh, PA. The views here, even though I'm in the suburbs, are breath-taking. We're finally getting settled in here and loving it. Hope you find something helpful about the process. I'm always here or on other social media if you have questions or just need a little encouragement from time to time. It may take a bit for my next upload because I'm currently working on a large illustration project and that may eat up my time for the next few weeks.Thanks for watching.
Happy sketching,
Jared

    Brian Ashmore Studio thank you! I do! I never thought of it as steep. I started working at an angle cause I saw Zbukvic and others working at an angle. I got used to guessing where the wash would fall with gravity and now that’s just how I paint everything.

    donntae burt thank you. I ended up doing a lot of gouache by demand. Haha my main practice for work and love is watercolor but people on here and insta kept asking for gouache. I love gouache too but I had initially planned on only doing watercolor videos. Gouache is a little more of a playground for me because I can take it less seriously and have fun. I feel like, if I’m not razor sharp on watercolor I’ll get fired from my illustration work haha 😂 😳

    Karin Lease thank you! I was so afraid I was rambling. I kept thinking “people are either closing the window or falling asleep.” I’m sure there were building crews and contractors then but I am sure more people built or worked on their own house back then. I think you can slow down the KZread player a bit. Cut the speed down that way. Eventually I am considering doing regular speed but always worry it’ll be too long. Also some websites let you download the KZread video. You could take the video and slow it down in iMovie- it just may be choppy. Feel free to ask anything about the process!

    Beautiful work as always! Is there a reason you don't paint your greens as green? it defiantly gives a lovely result, I'm always fighting with my greens! :'D Also my partner always laughs at me when I watch your videos, since I sit pulling a Popeye face.

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    6 жыл бұрын

    Lauren's Lines hahaha yay!! Popeye face! It works! Hmmm... do you mean that I don’t use green? I guess I don’t think about it. Green is a difficult color that is infuriatingly diverse. When I committed to learning to paint I restricted my palette to only a primary set for the first year or more. 1 red, 1 yelllow, 1 blue to force myself to learn to mix. It forced me to think differently so even now I usually forget I have a green or orange if I do. I only use those if I’m doing a super quick sketch. That’s probably why I don’t really use any green. I also tend to focus on value and temperature and forget color all together.

  • @pixiespages5679

    That's really interesting, I think I need to do some exercises on ignoring colour, Tend to find looking at temperature leads me right but to colour. hahaha all in practise though!

    What have you found to be the most helpful/useful resource to build your foundation for drawing i.e., book, certain artists, video etc to help with perspective like when you’re drawing these four squares? Do you have plans to draw anymore ‘four squares’?! Thanks!

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    6 жыл бұрын

    Tami Jacque I do plan to at some point! I’d like to do them from life but it’s so hard with kids to time it. Drawing- no particular book. On the advice of an illustrator I got a secret sketchbook (as in, nobody, not even spouse could see it to free me of self consciousness) moleskine.. has to be decent so you learn to get past fixating on a drawing or it looking good. And drew everything I saw. Everything. With only fountain pen. No erasing and must keep moving. It’s really hard but teaches you to find contours, roll with a sketch mistake and see clearer. Perspective- books are good but the above mentioned exercise really helped. The method of finding common points described in this Gurney video helped a TON kzread.info/dash/bejne/lWV629Csm7Hamqw.html basically the practice of drawing invisible horizontal lines or vertical lines that say.. “okay- the bottom of the window here goes straight to the car top here. And build your points that way. That helped me with figure too. Drawing invisible “plum lines” that show “the nose goes straight down to the toe or the right eye is directly above the button” Hope that helps! Obviously- practice. I work in entertainment art so backgrounds are a big part of my time. Just putting in the hours doing those helped me. :)

    You've probably answered this already but what palette is that? I want to get a palette that isn't plastic and I'm not a huge fan of the metal ones with pans, just curious. And of course that's some amazing work great job, as always.

    Simon Reese this one is a bit of a commitment.. it’s a Craig Young palette box. There is actually one on eBay right now but they’re pretty expensive. If you don’t want a brass box (they don’t rust) I highly recommend a Holbein box. Blick carries them now. Brian Ashmore did a review of both the Holbein boxes (250/1000) and a brass box. Those have a lot of info on the box and what they look like.

  • @JaredCullum

    ewok jedi yes- that’s true. Brass palette India has considerably less wait time and his craftsmanship is great. La petite palette also makes a good box. The wait time counter balances the expense haha it’s kinda like a payment plan. There is a CY palette like this one on eBay- I don’t know for how long but he’s selling it under value.

    I noticed you used a one inch brush for the top painting, and then a round for the other two. Any particular reason for the switch?

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    6 жыл бұрын

    Tim Hodge haha hmmm not really. I switched to do detail in the top and just kinda kept going with the round. Sometimes it’s easier to cheat organic texture like trees/foliage by using dryer paint with the round brush on its side. Flats chisel architecture better but I use both. I like that flats cover more.

    Thanks! I'm already a big fan of what you're doing here and I think i'll learn a lot :). I do have a gouache related question: In your box setup do you let the gouache dry and re wet it? I know that's a common practice with watercolour but I've never tried it with my gouache. Thanks again!

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    6 жыл бұрын

    The Sketch Adventure I do! It works best to put fresh paint in but if I know I’m going to sketch I’ll pour water in and stir with a tooth pick. I’ve heard from people that’s a bad idea for the paint quality but it’s never caused any issues for me. You have to be careful of the palette you let it dry in. This box seals and I can’t tilt it or it’ll pour out. Gouache turns into a chalky mess when it dries so if you use a palette that it can fall out of it will in chalky chunks.

  • @TheSketchAdventure

    Jared Loves to Draw Thanks so much Jared! :) I currently use bakers parchment wrapped over a wet microfibre cloth which creates a semi moist surface that keeps the paint workable for a long time. The whole thing is housed inside a metal pencil box! I had also heard that one shouldn't re wet gouache but I never knew why! Thanks!! :)

    I have a question. First off, great videos, some of these have hit home for me as I work my way through watercolor. I to like to have some white gouache handy, but I put mine in a pan in my little kit. Would you actually recommend just squeezing it out of the tube as apposed to having some dried up in a pan? Is there an advantage?

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    5 жыл бұрын

    Levi Simpson hi Levi! Happy to hear you’re learning. I’m always here to talk shop :) I do both! I have a dried portion where I’ve put it directly in my palette. Sometimes when I’m out and about I will literally hold the tube in my hand and poke directly out of it. No specific benefit other than you can get thick impasto quicker. You don’t have to wait a second for it to wet up. If you want a really strong spot you can put it out fresh and thick. No real profound benefit though.

    @@JaredCullum Okay, that's good to know, I was wondering how much of a difference it made coming out of the tube vs dried in a pan. Your video about drawing / painting at the zoo was a real help to me, but after the fact. I had just gone to the zoo with my girlfriend to draw and fell down the path of having my expectations to high and becoming a bit frustrated with my lack of results. It's a death spiral from there haha. But I regrouped later and your video was one that got me thinking and excited to go give it another crack. Looking forward to watching more of your channel and asking questions. Thanks.

    Levi Simpson oh yea- that happens! I find you get more out of focusing on drawing instead of painting unless you haven time. It’s not cheating to snap a photo, also. ;) It doesn’t matter how good you get it is still largely luck of the animal. I try to go into it thinking of it like fishing. I try.. but I’m just tossing a line. Sometimes you catch a “big one” but mostly just get little “okay” kinda meh sketches :) haha

    Chelli Reyes yea! That could be fun. The hard part is I sell pages directly and cut them out and usually when I’m done with a sketchbook I let my 3 year old paint over my paintings and drawings if he wants to. I also keep 1 burner for studies and every thought I have and then I have nicer ones for just watercolor. Most of my old ones are thrown away after a couple months of sitting on a shelf.
