Exploring Grand Island National Recreation Area

Grand Island is one of the newest assets in the National Forest Service inventory. It was added in the early 1990s. It was formerly a private game preserve and privately owned. Today, one can explore the miles of roads, trails and many beaches.
I joined an excursion of the Fortune Bay Expedition Team. FBET is a great organization with some highly capable adventurers who explore far reaches of the world. They have many classes and events that help others reach their full potential.
I retired from Fortune Bay as its director almost 2 years ago. I returned to help with the Grand Island Excursion.

Oh man! I’d love to scuba dive on that shipwreck. Goal for next summer is to get my boat up to the UP for some Lake Superior diving. I’ve got a 25’ Cuddy cabin that I camp on and dive off from.

In 1994 my brother and I biked around the island. Only us and 2 others on the island that day. Boy, have things changed.

I was there in 1998 and it was an empty island. Today it is CRAZY busy!

When rafting in west Virginia we were introduced as the old guys from detroit with jobs, when asked our names (real names or gang names drew hesitation from people).
