🎃 If you want an easier way to remove pumpkin from its rind, cut it in half and bake it on a medium low heat until it is soft. Make sure to keep about an inch of water in your roasting pan. It's so easy to remove the rind. I've been doing this for decades. Great for pumpkin soup, smoothies or to make pumpkin butter. If I'm making pumpkin pie I strain it for several hours to drain off the juice.

My favourite journeys are on a river! Winter time might be a bit more tidal and windy - and of course there are less moorings than on canals - but the scenery is amazing. Having watched you both from the beginning and seem your capabiliities I know that by the time you reach the Avon you will be fine. You've got the necessary 'bitts and never be afraid to ask for advice those you meet on route - and enjoy!

My Mum (Joe's) grew up & worked up Bath, well Batheaston but worked on Milsom St in Scarpino's Salon, probably in the 70's. It's a beautiful city.

Tis great to see you doing what Lady Penny was built to do!! As I recall, the most problematic part of my tiny house build was trying to keep the water pumps happy and running well. Whenever we sought advice from suppliers...the answer was always the same..' oh we have never had that happen before'...!!!???? Yeah right. Ended up using relays to power the pumps, activated by external pressure switch, cos the built in pressure microswitch wasn't up to the job.....etc etc....

We do occasionally but as we don't have fire bricks (they used up too much space) - the ash acts as a kind of insulation against the steel burner

Had a thought with your alternator, is the engine vibration slackening the locknut? Try a self-locking nut. Love the bird on your chimney, by the way.

Hi there, the chandlery guy was right about the rope attachment to your cleat. I’m just a bit concerned about your anchor shackles. You have the right ones. Now please take out the pins, put a little bit of grease on the thread. Replace and tighten as hard as you can with a spanner. Then you should “mouse” the shackles, just with a cable tie will do. Through the hole in the end of the pin and back through the shackle. If you do these things, the shackles can’t come undone in the water, but the grease means you can undo them when you want to. Good luck on the river, hope you don’t actually need the anchor!

At least you have a nice cycle down the Bristol/Bath cycle path from Keynsham! I cycled through there a lot when I lived in Bristol. Also I know you'll know this but be very careful setting an anchor from the stern of the boat. It's ok in very slow-moving water but in faster rivers you should always drop the anchor to the bow so the boat turns into the flow rather than having the water hitting the stern. Also it should be central so the water flows around the boat. At 24:08 there are some leaves in the engine bay water runoff and mine is exactly the same and it runs into the engine room if the runoff is blocked. I'll stop lecturing now. 😉

We've cycled from Bath up to Warmley once before it was lovely (we stopped at Bath Ales brewery!). That makes sense on faster flowing rivers! Yes those pesky leaves, we sweep them every few days but a bad time of year for them at the minute

Great to see you're on the move and such a beautiful cat. Just a point, it's usually safer to have your anchor on the bow as if you have it on the stern, there’s a chance of wrapping the line around the propeller. I say this through experience.

@@dianebowker1531 the problem is (with our limited understanding at least) - when coming downstream with the anchor on the bow, once deployed the current could cause the stern to spin round and get you lodged into the river bed (unless you’re on the broads or somewhere wider than 50ft+)

Yes accumulator fitted, have tried various PSI's in it and not solving the problem (system was working fine for 3/4 months but believe pump is dead.

@@DanniandJoe is the blader still charged? If the pump runs and is pulsating it suggests the bladder on the accumulator is under inflated or failed. There should be a Schreiber valve you can check the pressure like a car tyre. Might be worth also checking the flow rate the pump is actually managing. Other question is, are you getting air as well as water? In which case there is a poor joint on the suction side of the pump can draw air in while not leaking water out. It's worth just checking each part stage by stage. Another question is do you have a filter between the tank and the pump to stop debris in the tank mucking the pump up?

Hi Guys, you will be passing us very soon (if you haven't already) we are in a big grey widebeam just after Swineford lock, moor up and give us a knock, we fitted ours out from a shell and have victron setup so can have a chat if you like? regarding your monitor, don't go by the percentage too much, keep an eye on your amps, once the amps going in is between 1 & 9 percent of your total battery bank capacity for about 30 mins they can be classed as charged. The percentage does depend on condition of batteries. Better discussed over a beer 🙂

Hi just thought I might say that you should check the cable size to your water pump if the cable is under size it will burn the pump out or the pressure switch.If you need help with cable sizing go to 12volt planet voltage drop calculator.We have overflowed the peepot twice now so we got one twice the size but we still forget and have nearly done it again several times it is amazing how much you do

We double/triple checked the voltage drop before fitting and was working for 3/4 months but believe the two weeks in the dock with lack of voltage in the batteries is probably what's killed it. We'll try a new pump and check the cable size once more to be safe

put the steel rope in to the bolt shacle!!!!!....because with the vibrations you open the bolt and goodbye again!!!

Never trust what your battery monitor says as far as percentage. The only correct reading is when fully charged. Just never let them go below 12.2v ,which is 50percent and you will be fine. I suspect by now you will be running on full power again and all your pressure issues will have gone away.

Have you heard of a mud weight? Search for a 56lb weight, I got mine from a local market. If you have your anchor on the stern, have the mud weight on the bow, just on a length of rope. It will help to keep the boat stable should you need it.

Hi Danni and Joe, it's great to see you are finally getting a chance to cruise! At the same time, it looks like you are wading through novice narrowboater problems via the school of hard knocks (the best teacher). By the way, the new paint looks very nice in the video. Joe, that looks like about an 80 amp alternator. Note that most alternators are rated at a 5,000 rpm shaft speed and infinite input power available at the alternator shaft. It looks like you have about a 2.5 to 1 speed step up going from the engine to the alternator. Alternators do not have current limiting or over heat protection, the design is based around charging a single car battery. With the number of leisure batteries you have, that alternator will kill itself trying to charge that many discharged batteries, especially at low engine speeds. I don't know if this feature is available or not with your setup but, I would start the engine with the leisure batteries disconnected, run the engine at 2,000 rpm, then connect the leisure batteries. The slower the engine runs, the more torque is required to turn the alternator. Also, when the batteries are discharged, running the engine slow can easily cause over heating of the windings and rectifiers in the alternator. I don't know if it is available or not but, you need some device that will limit alternator output current to about 40 amps. Another reason for the belt squealing is the alternator pulley is so small, you don't get that much belt-to-pulley contact area. Lead-acid batteries don't like to be discharged. If the charge level is below 90%, the plates in the battery deteriorate much faster. Also, the 50% discharge rule assumes the batteries will be immediately recharged once reaching the 50% charge level (or SOC; State Of Charge). Cooler temperatures cause the battery voltage to rise for a fixed SOC. So, if the battery monitoring circuit doesn't take temperature into account, there will an exponential SOC error as temperatures depart from room temperature (of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius). When charging the batteries, the case temperature needs to be monitored. If it rises to 32C, you need to stop and let it cool off before resuming the charge. If the battery get above this temperature, the life plummets and there is a good chance of the battery exploding.

Unfortunately, I discovered the hard way that KZread won't let a person that is commenting, place a link in their text. You can post it but, you later find it, the posting vanishes. Anyway, 15 minutes lost. There are a large number of people experiencing the same problem you are having when they switch their leisure batteries over to Lithium from Lead-Acid. Do a Google search using the term "Alternator current limiting", which directly addresses the problem you are seeing. Most narrowboat installation seem to have 3 to 4 lead-acid leisure batteries. I notice your system has more than that so, when deeply discharged, you are far exceeding the capability of your alternator. Car alternators were originally designed to charge a single flooded lead-acid battery (the type with caps that need water added every year). Car alternators are set to output a fixed voltage. In the past (I have been working with car alternators since 1974, lead-acid batteries since 1968), the output voltage tolerance was quite wide: 13.7 to 15.0 volts. Sealed lead-acid batteries (or AGM batteries) can't tolerate more than 14.2 volts In your climate for a long term charge; it boils the water out of them. You will note that your solar charger will exceed this voltage by 0.1 to 0.2 volt until the charge is finished, then will drop the charge voltage down to 13.3 to 13.7 volts (all voltages specified at room temperature). During a cruise, the alternator will try to keep the output at its output voltage setting. I found several companies that address the alternator shortcomings; Balmar and Victron to name a few. Balmar specializes in marine alternators and has types that monitors/controls alternator temperature, output, current, and output voltage.

with something so important, possibly thicker pullys on the alternator and engine? i can imagine when the altenator is under load, that tiny thin belt wont last long, have you got a dedicated video for your electrics? its a nice overkill sytem id like to learn more about, most are tiny and/or rely on hookups.

@@DanniandJoe I am a Dutch schipper and we use a brand called Epifanes in the Netherlands, the multi marine primer is especially good to fix an old layer or to start as a new base. We use this on inland River vessels. I don't know if it's available in England but it's worth a try if it doesn't work out with this paint.

I cannot recall from when you fitted that green alternator .. is it a super high power output? Or does the victron DC:DC charger do current limiting? The alternator won't be current limited I think. Instead it relies on you not putting a load on it that exceeds the current rating of the alternator. Whether or not this has anything to do with your belt coming loose I don't know. Can you share the victron DC:DC charger model number?

We fitted the alternator near the beginning but it’s had minimal run time in the grand scheme of things. Think it’s a 70a unit, the Victron DC:DC is the Orion Tr Smart 30

@@DanniandJoe ok the smart tr 12:12 30 looks to be fixed at 35A maximum input current which would be fine if the alternator is 70A. During the video you said you were seeing 650W I think. That would be much more than 35 x 14 = 490W. Is it possible that was combined alternator and solar?

@@robiniddon7582 Yes so the solar was adding to that wattage. When the alternator is working it’s outputting around 20a or so, even with the new belt it’s now intermittent with no obvious slipping. I’ll get in the engine bay and just check the vibration isn’t undoing the bolt. I’ll ge the voltmeter on the alternator itself too

Standard leisure batteries are bloody useless really. The Rolls type lead acid are good but expensive. Really a couple of big lithiums are the best best.

The anchor on the stern and not the bow, that’s a new one on me, better think that one again. Have you ever watched a yacht at anchor or on a mooring buoy on a river. They swing from the bow so that the boat is always pointing against the flow of the tide and not with the tide, it’s why the bow is higher out of the water than the stern, that way you don’t flood your boat when the tide turns. Just saying.
