Exploring Downtown BERKELEY CALIFORNIA
A guided walking tour of the Downtown Berkeley neighborhood just next to the Univeristy of California at Berkeley campus. While we walk along Shattuck Avenue and Center Street I'll show you all of the trendy restaurants, shops, and museums that you'll find in this very eclectic neighborhood. Definitely worth a visit if you're exploring the greater San Francisco Bay area.

I went to U.C Berkeley in the late 80s early 90s. So much has changed since then. I like this video. Honestly, I don't recognize much. I have been away from the Bay Area for too long.
Ah, my hometown. Central downtown has changed a lot. That McDonald's on University and Shattuck has been there for at least 40 years. Thanks for doing such a great job on this video.

I am from Portland, Oregon, and I just visited Salt Lake City for the first time. I was amazed how clean it was and how parking was still free for the first hour downtown, at the Capitol, in the entertainment districts, etc. I felt like I was at an American city that was 25 years ago. Everything was quaint and nice. I plan to visit again next spring. Your video was great to watch - looks pretty nice, but those Parking fees are quite something.

SLC is a nice city. And it's more progressive than most people think. The next time you're there, head over to _300 W._ and _North Temple,_ that's just northwest of downtown, and hit up _Crown Burger._ TRUST ME! Get the _Colossal Burger_ and Onion Rings. It will run you around $13.00 but the wait is _well worth_ it. They give you around 15 or 16 mostly large rings. And they're quality, as the barometer of a good onion ring is when you bite into it, the onion doesn't slide out of the crumbed batter. You can also put a couple of those rings on your already huge burger, which includes a heavy portion of pastrami!? I add pickles to my order. And the place will be packed, usually, if you're there around lunch or dinnertime. But you won't wait long, as their staff flies around that place getting out quality food and fast. They're like worker bees those folks. You won't leave hungry, that is for sure. And if you don't want the meal I get every time I go, they have a ton of different items on their menu. Such as grilled cheese sandwiches and soups and Mexican food, if you wish for such a thing. Gyros, too. Fish. You name it! www.crown-burgers.com/menu.php
😂I love how dude quickly moved past a staple of Berkeley's, the Berkeley Wing Nut! It's okay dude! They won't bite (too much)! Wow, has that town changed since the last time I was there. Where that art building sits used to be the _Bank of America_ and where they put the _BofA_ used to sit _Kinko's,_ I believe. He should have kept heading down _Shattuck_ towards _Pegasus Books._ Also, check out the north side of _Shattuck._ There's a _really good_ pizza place down that way called _Cheese Board Collective._ Some of the best tasting pizza _ever_ ! Plus, they're _really_ cool people, in that at the end of their night, they hand out free slices to a few homeless people who will gather for that treat.

@@YellowProductions, sure. Also, head up to _Telegraph Ave._ That's the _perfect_ place to people watch. ' _People's Park,_ too. 😂 P.S. If you go to the UC's cafeteria, just around the northeast corner (and one block north) of _People's Park,_ on Sundays, the public is allowed to eat their buffet for around ten bucks. And the spread is _wonderful_ ! Plus you get to feel the energy from all those college kids buzzing around the place.

@@shawnstewart6148, _Fat Slice_ is _hella_ good! _Blondie's_ ain't too bad either. Do you ever go over to North Beach in SF? If not, hit up _Tony’s Pizza Napoletana._ I _love_ that spot. Have you ever been to _Artichoke Basille's Pizza_ on Telegraph Avenue just past the border of Berkeley and into Oakland? If not, go there. They're based out of NYC and their slices are large and taste _great._ 🤪🍕

@@Silence_Duder_Gooder I wish I had been to those places but sadly no. Now, I live in Fresno, thus, I cannot try out those spots until I visit my hometown again. Unfortunately, I don't know when that will be. But thanx for the recommendations.
A snapshot of a moment in time for this longtime downtown Berkeley resident.. The picturesque early 20th century buildings he mentioned are being torn down left and right to build highrises. Many storefront businesses have closed either because their buildings were, or are about to be, demolished, or have simply gone out of business, like Walgreen's and Missing Link bicycles. If it seems like the only businesses left downtown are restaurants, it's because other businesses have closed due to competition from online shopping and nearby cities that have malls where you can park your car without exorbitant fees. At least the construction and the outdoor seating have inspired the city to eliminate the panhandlers who used to be at least one to a block on downtown Shattuck Ave., and move the homeless encampments down to the industrial area near the freeway, though you still find the odd homeless person sleeping in the streets in daytime. There's still enough crime that some downtown businesses, like hairdressers, keep their front door locked during business hours and eyeball you before they let you in. This year the downtown Wells Fargo bank installed bulletproof shields at the tellers' windows.
haha this video makes Shattuck seem kinda nice

Less homeless on your walk than normal. If you venture outside that area, it gets grimier with more homeless and mentally ill on the streets. But the University of California at Berkeley is a world class educational institution.

Hello Chris, Great walk video once more.... I see a lot of public transport, why is renting a car in Los Angeles area recommended? I'm a European and used to our busy and not so social traffic here, will it be easy for someone like me to drive in the LA area? Thanks once more, have a great day! Greetings from the Netherlands

Thanks Barry -- the public transport doesn't run that frequently and you may find the stations on the sketchy side. Amd many attractions arent served by public transit at all. I advise Uber or Lyft for folks who don't want to drive.

@@YellowProductions Thanks Chris, you visited Europe, is traffic in The USA and specific California comparable or do you find traffic in Europe (much) worse? I visited Las Vegas in 2007 and was amazed how much room drivers give you even when it is very busy. I also visited Boston and New York in 2019, but i think those cities compare to Europe. Thanks again.... Looking forward to your next video!!!😀 P.s., maybe a tip for a video: Traffic in the USA

DIDN{T MENTION some of those restaurants are closing. There are just to many homeless and criminals committing violent crimes people just don’t want to be there. It’s dangerous and unsafe.
@Silence_Duder_Gooder

Could you cite your evidence of said allegation?
MISLEADING - Downtown Berkeley has a large homeless populations. As you walk down the streets you were on later in the day you have to make sure you don’t step in pee or poop from the homeless. Berkeley is in the process of building several homeless centers on the surrounding blocks which will only attract more homeless. Berkeley government would rather offer free shelter to the homeless than offer making assisting people to buy homes and have a safe city. Something else not mentioned, Berkeley has a lot of violent crime, one of the worst cities in the country

I "lived" there while homeless and you're overstating a few things. And if there is "pee and poop" there it is because the city refuses to take care of that, as businesses won't allow SOME PEOPLE to use their facilities. And I get it. It only takes one mentally ill person to blow up the bathroom and that's that for _all_ homeless people. But all homeless people are _not_ a monolith. Just like I wouldn't piss or crap in the streets UNLESS I HAD NO OTHER OPTIONS. Because I _sure as Hell_ wouldn't defecate or urinate on _myself!_ We're not animals, most of us, you know. If people are tired of seeing homeless people, it's simple: HOUSE THEM!
😂everywhere else business’s are closed or for rent this is so fake
