Exploring Cold Spring New York. A Great Hiking Day Trip from NYC

I take the Metro-North Railroad from Grand Central Terminal in New York City to Cold Spring, New York. It’s a pleasant small town located along the Hudson River about 50 miles away from NYC. I first go for a short hike along the Little Stony Point trail and see some excellent views and even spot a bald eagle. Then I hike the Blue Hill short loop, which is a much longer trail, but includes incredible scenery with some elevation gains. I also saw the ruins of the old Cornish Estate also called North Gate. I then head back to town for some pizza and coffee before heading home.

I was born in Cold Spring and lived in neighboring Nelsonville for 15 years. It's a beautiful village. I still have a few friends that live in the area. FYI: The movie "Hello, Dolly" was partial filmed in Cold Spring. Don McLean lived in Cold Spring when he wrote and recorded. "American Pie". Little Stoney Point has a beach on the northside (upriver) it is called "Sandy Beach" by the locals. Bald eagles do inhabit the area. Not uncommon. While exploring Little Stoney Point you will find remnants of the Trap Rock Quary structures that once has in the area. There are other trails back off the river especially some in Nelsonville. As a kid I explored all over Bull Hill (a.k.a. Mt. Taurus). The cold spring in Cold Spring is down by the railroad tracks near the old train station which is now the Depot Restaurant. Bill and Hillary Clinton enjoy eating there. I recommend the "Steamers". Legend has it, General George Washington, whose troops were camped on the hill that Haldane Central School occupies today, tasted the spring and remarked how cold it was. At time 14:00 you will see a "Palen's Drug Store". It was an old "Rexall Drugs" store. It was in two buildings. The one the sign is over and the dorr to the right of it which was where the local "Bryer's" soda shoppe resided. The pizza store is "Cold Spring Pizza." Years before it too was a "Borden's" soda shoppe called "Busy Corner". The Haldane students would frequent there during lunch and after school. It was one of two pizza joints in Cold Spring in the 60-70's. Great vIdeo!

I really enjoyed this video! There's just so many nice things to say about Cold Spring! I like the town, the mountains, and the Bald Eagle. But in the early 2000s i never remember there being something like fire smoke traveling from the West Coast to the East Coast like that. In matter of fact i don't even remember there being many forest fires back then.

Zamora is one of those magical towns with a national park called Podocarpus definitely a must-see besides Quilotoa, Cotopaxi National Park, El Pailón del Diablo waterfall, San Pablo Lake, Cuicocha lake, and Otavalo. 👌

@@tasteofmeiguo1146 There's a lot of great places! For a beach trip, Long Beach, NY and Long Branch, NJ are great places. Those are the only two beach spots I've gone to so far, but there're actually a lot more for beach trips. I would really like to go to the Hamptons, but it's a bit expensive. I've also been meaning to go to New Canaan, CT, there's an interesting home and museum there called the glass house. Philadelphia, is great too, lots to do there. I'm also sure that there are probably a lot of great places nearby that I haven't even heard of yet.
