Exploring an Abstract Painting Idea for a Large Canvas | Paint Study

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this art demo, I’ll show you how to explore an abstract painting idea for a large canvas. This quick study is to flush out an idea for the second of three 36” x 48” paintings. Each of these paintings will be tied together by a shared theme, but they'll each have their own unique flair in terms of color palette, style, and composition.
Working on such a large canvas is both thrilling and a bit daunting. That's where the magic of painting studies comes in. Before I even think about touching the large canvas, I like to work out my abstract painting ideas in smaller studies. These are like mini rehearsals, allowing me to experiment with acrylic painting techniques and see how my ideas translate visually.

In this video, I'm going to give you an art demo of how I practice painting these ideas. These small studies are crucial. They help me understand composition, color harmony, and texture, which are so important in acrylic painting, especially when it's going to be on a large canvas. It's like a test drive for my ideas!
I'll also show you the painting study I did before starting the first piece. It's a great way to see the evolution of abstract painting ideas from sketch to final product. Doing these painting studies really helps refine my approach, ensuring that when I finally approach the large canvas, I feel confident and ready.
And here's where I need your help! At the end of this video, I'll show you all three painting studies for my next piece in this series. I'd love your input on which you think would translate best to a large canvas. Your opinions are invaluable to me, so don't hold back!
So, let's explore these abstract painting ideas together. Whether you're into acrylic painting, interested in how a painting series develops, or just love art, there's something here for everyone. Let's get those creative juices flowing!
And remember, keep on painting!

Hi Chris. I love your work! In this vid, I preferred the small sketchy paintings to the large finished one in the beginning of the vid. I was attracted to all the small ones but mostly in the vertical position with the multiple circles on the bottom. Fun video. And inspiring.

This video just comes at the right time as I am working on a mixed media piece with a similar coulour palette. I clearly like the 1st sketch best. It's the blue background that pleases my eyes. + it's not that abstract like the other sketches. Something like that could well be a part of what I have in mind. I will do my own explorings... thank you for the inspiration

Well, I like them all, but my favourite would be the first one, the demo one. I liked it in its original way up, but also in the horizontal position, the little touch of pink really works to make it exciting for me, it would look great as a larger painting. I also liked the blue one, it was surprising, the green one was nice but it wasn't as exciting as the first. The first one has a vibration I know its weird. Cheers from Tasmania!

Hey Carole! I like the consistency of Liquitex basics, it's close to Winsor Newton acrylics (which I prefer), I haven't used Nova a whole lot, but my thoughts are they are more high flow acrylics with good pigment. I actually have quite a bit of Nova paint, but I've only used them a few times so far. Hope that helps😊
