Exploring an abandoned house in the Scottish Highlands

Exploring an abandoned house in the Scottish Highlands.
This house is somewhere near Grantown-on-Spey. Just sat at the side of the road, slowly rotting away.
It's a shame as it is quite a nice house with beautiful views.

    Looks in decent condition, considering how many years it's not been lived in. The decor isn't a problem either as long as there's not any damp or leaks. Would make a nice little retirement cottage when done up. Good video 👍🏼

    What are squatters laws like now? Do you still have the rught to inhabit if its been abandoned for more than 12 years?

  • @Rufan-yy7rn

    @Rufan-yy7rn

    9 ай бұрын

    the laws surrounding squatting changed in 2012. It is now a criminal offense to squat in a residential building that someone else owns. This means that if someone owns a property, and someone else occupies it without permission, they can be prosecuted and potentially face imprisonment. It is not legal to inhabit a house that has been abandoned for more than 12 years without the owner's permission. The owner can apply for a possession order through the courts to evict the squatters.

    Great video (except for the music). That house is in "plenty good enough" condition. It just needs a decent clean-up and you could move right in. (I've lived many years in both Rural New Zealand and also the "almost outback" of Australia where many places are in, not-too-different condition, "rather imperfect, but plenty liveable"). Clearly it's been on the electric before, just get that re-connected. If it was for sale at anything like a fair price, I, or someone, anyone, would snap it up and move right in. Unfortunately too many houses (and land) are owned by "investors", price speculators, landlords and just plain "land hoarders". They'd rather see places sit empty and degraded eventually into a ruin, and meanwhile have folks unable to afford a home of their own. I'm in my 17th year of looking for my own place, "affordable, to me". almost anywhere within The South Island of New Zealand, or the SouthWest corner of Western Australia. Indeed I'd consider the UK including Scotland and Northern Ireland if the right circumstances presented themselves. We need a new house and property owning system, incorporating some of the aspects of "crofting". Abandoned and neglected places should simply be seized by my proposed new "Super Crofting Commission" and made available at token price to people who will live there and look after the place, buildings and land. (Obviously exclusions from seizure would apply for genuine "holiday homes" still in use on a seasonal basis). If a House and land is abandoned for 5 or 10 years ? Owner should sell it for a realistic price. Otherwise the Government Super Crofting Commission should seize it and Move the place on so that someone else can live there, and be a part of the local community, and all of what goes with that. Rural communities decline because new people cannot move there, because existing houses are hoarded, left empty and decaying into ruins. Let people live there.

    Plus please hold the camera "landscape" so we get a full width view. That way it's making the best of the KZread format, we simply get a far larger viewing area. Even fairly basic phones now have surprisingly good cameras on them nowadays. cheers
