I worked that building a few times for OT when there were staffing shortages. Usually on third shift while they were sleeping. You guys have seen more of the building than I have. The A Honor Dorm was for the "good" inmates that earned the privilege of more open spaces and additional amenities such as a single bed and private(ish) showers. It is very sad to see that millions of dollars in of resources such as all the kitchen and dental facilities have been left to rot rather than being utilized to garner funds for the system. Also, would have been perfect for housing homeless people. They could learn real life skills rehabilitating the facility. Cooking. Barbering. Painting. Plumbing. Electronics. Etc. Vocations that will transfer to earning power that could lead to becoming self-sufficient.

World-wide, I see government facilities like this just left as -is and cannot for the life of me understand why efforts aren't made to even donate equipment and items perhaps to even less well off regions and countries ... just a collossal, crying shame.

I served time in the US Prison System & the reason why Passing of food in the dining hall is not allowed is because the Guards want to make sure that a Inmate isn't pressuring another Inmate out of their Food

You guys can even make a prison a fun adventure! At the same time though I could get a sense of the sadness and fear that the inmates had to be feeling. The way you so skillfully and creatively make these films is impressive. Thanks so much guys. I can't wait till the next adventure.

That looks like the old medium security in Rhode Island! almost exactly as i remember it was closed around 1991! then reopened for a few years later when the new prison bldg they built became over crowded! I spent 3 years there working my way through the system! I was in the riot in C dorm in1982! A CO was killed there but not at that time! That happened in the 70s before my time! it was over capacity in the late 80s till it closed in 91! average population was about 480! it was built to hold 240! the first bunk beds to go in were built by me a month after the riot! That's my story i've been out 30 years! Those metal things in the 4 big rooms are bunk beds, if you count them there were 60 per dorm giving a capacity of 480!the cells were in the basement segregation! The pool table was in the COs room at end of hall first floor! 2 nighter you would be locked up 2 days for minor prison infractions! The anchor painted on the floor is the state symbol of Rhode Island and is on our state flag! The state motto is "hope" not realistic in that place.

Great job exploring the prison Leslie. I totally agree with you that warehousing people in dehumanising conditions, many times for drug convictions does not produce a positive result for society. They come out worse than when they went in. Keep up your good work!

@@gacj2010 I wasn’t advocating for the abolishment of prisons. I support rehabilitation for younger and/or non-violent offenders as much as possible and incarceration for those who are violent and pose a threat to society. The US shouldn’t be the prison capital of the world and I don’t favor private “for profit” prisons which can create a $ incentive for incarceration.

@@rupertpearce9158 Understood. What solutions do you have for the problem. It runs deep. Its about breakdown of respect for life stemming from breakdown of family. How do you fix families and often single mothers trying to do their best. This is the deep place where it starts . Well , if we cant fix that , then kids learn from other kids, and the negative forces are appealing. Then we have the assault on you walking down a street or a knifing to another who is buying gas or on a city street or a push onto the tracks or into the street. Combine that with the lesser punishment for crimes as is the trend from Soros and the leftists model . People dont commit crimes for 2 reasons. Either respect for others or fear of punishment. As I said earlier , #1 is gone. Thank you for your response

Having worked and trained in that particular building I can assure you that the reason your camera lenses were fogging up and the sudden cold drafts you felt in the different areas of the facility are a result of the place being haunted by the spirits of the incarcerated . If the tour was conducted at night, the experience would have been more vivid with the sounds of voices and unexplained noises....when we trained at night there, it would definitely rile them up quite a lot ......cold breeze on your neck ...hair raising on your arms for no reason ....it was always a unique experience...never knew what was going to happen ....but nice job on your tour and go back again at night and say hello to the boys....

So I own a Historic Victorian house in a small town out in the desert. We’re famous for an old wild west prison that was known to be the roughest in the territory. The prison closed in 1909 and the gentleman that built my house purchased and took home one of the guard towers on a wagon and used it as a sleeping porch in the heat of the summer. Pretty sure it was the guard tower that had the gatlin gun in it and looked over the women’s cells and the yard. I converted the upper story to a guest room and the bottom floor is a utility room/laundry room now. Always loved old prisons. Now I’m obsessed with them. Thank you so much for this video!!! You’re welcome to my old dusty tower anytime!

Better yet, I know some officers who worked there and loved the place. They could have given a far better tour. As far as I know, the state doesn’t own it anymore but if the current owners were cool with it, would have been a good time.

Ive worked in corrections for 6 years. Sharing food in the dining room is usually prohibited because food is one way to pay debts to other inmates from gambling or to pay for protection within the jail or prison. Gambling of any form isn't allowed in correctional facilities as far as I'm aware from experience.

I think the original thinking in America behind making prisons a terrible place to be, was that the inmates wouldn't want to come back so they would do better when they got out. We have a saying, "If you do the crime, you gotta do the time." With all the repeat offenders though, clearly that thinking doesn't work too well. So either the prisons need to be even worse places to live or we need a whole new way to rehabilitate them.

A relative used to be a Guard in a maximum security prison (convicted murderers) I remember her telling me there was zero privacy. She wore a uniform like police and the same gun. There were zero tolerance for violence or the gun did the talking unfortunately. She said it was a very stressful job. If I remember right the Red automated area i if committed more serious offense (or the "Hole" (none or very low sunlight basement) after fighting and breaking rules) and after behaving were moved to the upstairs with greater level of freedom and sunlight until finally released early on good behaviour or prior to the end of sentence time. This prison for ppl that committed offense like repeated drunk driving drug dealing etc and if the court sentence is "The weekend in jail" for stupid actions not because you're a career criminal I didn't see the Visitor entrance. Exactly like Airport Security, the same equipment you have to remove your jacket and empty pockets put shoes and gloves into a plastic bin which travels through a small X Ray machine while you stand inside the metal frame X Ray machine (you showed us that). The glass you see the prisoner inside during visit is almost 10cm thick and speak through a phone while the guards record it or just listen to the conversation. The tvs would be inside the cell so the inmate can change channels along with Art materials books and family pictures. Clear housing so drugs or any possible weapons cannot be placed inside without being seen inside. The big loudspeakers were for music like at Christmas or beside the TV so everyone can hear the baseball game. The microphone standing under where the tv was belongs in the office it's from the PA not for kareoke. I believe the little camera goes to the guard area for "Suicide watch" It does happen. A young woman of 19 or 20 committed suicide in her cell about 10 years ago. They're supposed to jump and intervene during any suicide attempts.

Sorry Leslie, but I have to agree with Danny. It depends on the crime. For instance, If you hurt or kill children or are guilty of hate crimes that result in death, you do not deserve to be treated to any luxuries. Maybe you get 3 meals a day, a bed and access to facilities with which to keep yourself clean but little else. After all, you’ve denied your victim even that. Never hurt kids.

The area where it said 2 nights is most likely the hole and the most common time in seg was probably 2 nights. People don't go to prison for 2 nights they go to county instead. Most states will only send you to prison if you have 2 years or more some states it's 1 and the only exception is if you're on parole and get in trouble you do a 90 day turnaround but they'd NEVER send someone to a state prison for only 2 nights it would 100% be county or city jail instead

There are, or at least were, back in the day, folks who would come in Friday night and leave on Sunday leading a regular life during the week. They, however, were not housed at this building but in the Minimum Security facility in the Work Release Wing. Work Release was an area where inmates would be let out on honor to go to work regular jobs and earn a real paycheck. A portion of their earnings went to the prison system to pay for their housing the rest went into their personal inmate accounts. Some inmates made more than the CO's. 2 nights was 48 hours where you gave up your radio and TV and other luxuries like job rather than facing an official disciplinary board. It was Officer's discretion. Upon the completion of the 48 hours everything went back to status quo. Usually got your job back too. Like an unpaid vacation.

At the time of its last closing it was never used as a Jail. The area with the white board was E Dorm. A 2 nighter was used rather than sending the inmate to Segregation. They would loose privileges ( recreation, visits, phones ) for 2 nights but it wouldn’t count against them as formal discipline

the cells that have the cameras in front of them are normally for the ones who wish to harm them selfs high is for high risk low is for the low risk inmates most older prisons have lead paint pealing from the walls plus you both should have masks on alot of absots in there. a honor dorm for those inmates who stay out of trouble and\or wor in the front offices

Thanks for the tour. I don't think having inmates in bunks being watched is the same as treating them like animals. There are different levels of security to match the crime or behavior of the inmate. I know people who were in low level and were treated well and given opportunities with little restrictions, but if you have someone with no conscience and is a threat to hurt others, they have to be in a safe place kept from hurting others. I took care of a lot of inmates that came to the ER and had no problem with them, but many were very manipulative. I look at it as an animal has no control of where it is and I feel bad if they aren't in a good environment. The prisoners that are in maximum security, not low level offenders, but higher restricted prisons, put themselves in the environment they're in and it should be a place they don't want to return to. If someone raped and brutally murdered your child, would you want them in a comfortable recliner living at ease? I say provide food, clothing and shelter and give them counsel, but they have to earn anything else.

Prison in America is a business. It sets prisoners up for failure. Our justice system is broken, ineffective and inhumane. The recidivism comes from a number of factors. If your a felon, do you know how hard it is to find a job, much less an apartment/housing?? So, yeah a lot of people fall back into the system. And that's not even taking into account mental illness or addiction which often coincide. If you look at countries that actually treat their inmates like human beings that, obviously, need help, their recidivism rates are much much lower. If you take everything away from someone, they've got nothing to lose. That causes problems. If you treat someone like a human and actually do something to help rehabilitate them and then give them a hand in succeeding in that rehabilitation after they're released, chances are better that they won't re-offend.

@@bextar6365 Did you even read what I wrote?? How, exactly is a person expected to stay out of prison when they can't get a job, a place to live, and possibly mental health? Do you know how many people come out of prison with PTSD?? That shouldn't happen. Ok, they messed up in some way. Some of them shouldn't even have gotten time in prison. But they are still human beings. You don't know every felon's story, to say they enjoy prison is ridiculous and ignorant. And who says they aren't taking responsibility? Again how do you suppose they survive without a job and place to live??? And, for those who served long sentences, reintegration into a foreign society, basically? Long timers went to prison in another time from one society & released into very different one. Furthermore, prison is a society, of it's own... Also, every prison is different. Every state and district is different. There are still states where the color of your skin factors in on what kind of sentence you get. And why do rich people tend to fair far better for their offenses? Should they not take responsibility for their actions??? Do they "get what they deserved"? I mean, really!?! Again, our justice system is broken.. Ultimately you are not all knowing and you have NO idea what battles other people are fighting. You have no idea what kinds of history these people come from. And everybody has their own life's experiences. Nobody is infallible, not even you. Maybe open your mind, a little, and have some compassion. Or don't, it's up to you.. I, for one, feel lucky that my upbringing was decent, I was loved, fed, sheltered, etc and I lived in a safe neighborhood. I still could have ended up messing up, though, falling into drugs or something. There are some great prison KZreadrs, you should watch some of their videos. I highly recommend Jessica Kent.

We actually do offer reform programs in the United States at most prisons and jails. The problem is, most people here would prefer to live the street life (or so they’ve said in numerous interviews) and go right back to it. The town closest to me has a GED and college program where inmates can work on learning new trades (with certificates from the local trade school), earn their GED, earn college credits, they have work release programs, on-site counselors, and parental time where they are taught parenting skills and given the chance to bond with their children. They also have drug programs and halfway houses (rehab for adjusting back into civilization). Honestly, in a lot of situations, I’d consider them coddled to an extent. The saying here is, “three hots and a cot.” In other words, they brag they don’t have it too bad in prisons. The problem in the US is the fact that people are released far too quickly and, secondly, they just couldn’t care less in most cases. If people were truly afraid of what they’d heard about prisons and jails and those released hated it so much, they wouldn’t do the things that caused them to land there in the first place. Instead, they challenge our law enforcement, act entitled, and victimize themselves. Get released, repeat.

The worst usually end up in solitary confinement and if they're good they get an hour outside a day. I do have to agree, that over in Europe you all do take very good care of your prisoners and their rehabilition.❤✌️

I can't imagine the number of violent incidents that have occurred in this prison over the decades. I would expect that the individual cells were safer than the communal dormitories, but having to spend years and years, living in a tiny cell, with just steel bars as a door, possibly with 2 inmates in each cell is something that I'm glad I have never had to experience.
