The 'tubes" are cage dipoles, a type of radio antenna. The whole array formed an over the horizon radar system that could be heard on short wave all over the US and Europe. The horizontal wires behind the dipoles formed a reflector which pushed all the radio frequency energy forward over the dipoles.

in case anyone would like go there nowadays for this kind of adventure - I attempted it myself in november 2022. Cycled from Kiev all the way to the Chernobyl gate. The problem is - russian animals left the whole zone covered in various type of landmines (they estimate it's around 10 thousand of them). Tried to bribe the guards but they told me that they cant let me through cuz they cant order all the soldiers up there to not to shot me down .There's military forces there, cuz all the territory around the powerplant is considered a crucial infrastructed inside a warzone, meaning if you get spotted by a sniper/guard u get shot without a warning imediatelly (cuz they dunno if u r russian or who) + the whole area is just couple of kilometres from Belarussian territory and rockets launched from there land in Chernobyl frequently. So not only it is impossible to illegally get there through the forest cuz it's completely mined, but also to get there through the main road still will leave u at the mercy of both russian and Ukrainian snipers/soldiers. You would have to be literally suicidal to attempt it. Super sad cuz the mines will make this area unreachable even when the war is over :((( good times for Chernobyl adventures are over..

@Aussie Pom Most of the tour companies all hit the same spots in the exclusion zone, at least as of January 2020. They all leave from Kyiv in the morning and return in the evening and generally take you to Pripyat, the power station, and Duga 3. In Pripyat, they will all take you to the school, sporting complex, supermarket, riverside, and the ferris wheel. Obviously you only have a limited time at all of them, and I don't think any take you to the Red Forest anymore as the radiation levels are too high there. That said, I think anyone who has gone an organized tour all dream of doing something like Shiey has done here.

To clarify & explain the radiation readings in the video, the readings were being taken in microsieverts (µSv) not milisirverts (mSv). The highest reading mentioned in the video "600" was probably 6 microsieverts per hour, as they didn't seem to be taking the decimal point into account on the readout. That is about the equivilent to a dental X-ray. An international flight is about 40 microsierverts and a chest X-ray is 100 microsieverts. The maximum exposure permitted to members of the public in the US each year is 1,000 µSv. Cancer risk is increased with doses higher than 100,000 µSv. A deadly dose is 4,000,000 µSv (Death within 6 weeks) 10 minutes of exposure to the Chernobyl reactor after it's explosion was 50,000,000 (Death within 24 hours) TLDR: They'll be fine.

I remember watching this last year. Now Chernobyl has been seized, Kyiv is under siege, and the country is a warzone. Surrel and errie. Chernobyl is errie in its own right, but I'm sure anyone going there in 10-15-20 years will see not only 1986 stuck in time, but 2022 as well, from the abandoned and destroyed military equipment left in the woods. This video is errie because the beginning is as time capsule as the content, Kyiv alive is so haunting and errie, its like watching someone go on a trip to the WTC prior to 9/11, no one saw this total invasion coming, Donbass sure, but a siege of Kyiv? Who would have thought the streets you were standing on, are an active warzone, the subway you walked in are now shelters, buildings seen are now gone, many of the people you see on camera in Kyiv, and elsewhere may not be with us anymore. This puts life into perspective, things can change in the blink of an eye. The talk of Nuclear war is something younger Millennials and Zoomers never had experience but now we do, have to at some level. I just hope this war ends and peace comes between Ukraine and Russia, and well the West and Russia avoid the worst possible scenario. My thoughts go out to the Ukrainian people under siege and resisting this right now. To the brave Ukrainians protesting under occupation and the brave Russians protesting against this war in Russia as well. Stay strong. God bless. 🇺🇦

For everyone who is disturbed by the radioactivity: It is not that bad. Being inside the zone for a few days is absolutely fine for you, you still stay under the very safe limit for radioactivity. Drinking water from the zone is a worse idea, because when there is radioactivity outside your body, most of the alphaparticles do not reach your organs. (They get absorbed by small amounts of air and easily by clothes, but when in your body the harm the most, because your body absorbs them while Gammaparticles mostly just go through.) The real problem would be to live IN the zone for a longer amount of time, because then you are in that radiation for longer and your body won't be able to heal against the radiation. It is like taking one xray scan in a year (totally safe) vs taking one every day. That all just is true, as long as you don't overshoot. When you enter the reactor or go in some houses, especially basements close to the reactor, this can damage you, even with protection, for the rest of your life. Houses are worse then outside, because there the radioactive material can not just blow away or be covered up by nature.

  • @hbh3144

Since 30 years now had passed it's a lot less dangerous. But still very dangerous. Our planet is naturally radioactive but at very low levels compared to byproducts of nuclear reactors. So we all are radioactive but evolution developed a system in our bodies which can fix damage caused by this. Problem starts when you exceed the limits and it can no longer repair itself. In this case there are two types of danger - exposure and source. For exposure there is a number how much radiation your body can absorb in given time and still be able to fix itself. Higher radioactivity - less time you can spend there. Lower - more time you can spend there. Second type of danger is a lot worse - the source. You can actually inhale radioactive particle an carry it home. Your body may use it as a building block for your cell because it cannot tell the difference. This way you may be overexposed for rest of your life because it is there inside you. It may be small but it's enough to cause constant damage to surrounding cells and eventually develop a cancer. So in theory you can actually safely spend some time inside the melted core as long as you do not inhale or carry anything from there outside. Good part is that source cannot radiate forever - it decay. Some particles decays faster, others slower and it may take thousands of years or even more until all is gone. In this case most dangerous particle is radioactive Iodine half of which decays in every 10 days I think. Most dangerous simply because normal Iodine is pretty rear thing in nature and our bodies absorb everything it can get. That is why you want to take Iodine pills first weeks or months after fallout. Second is radioactive Cesium half of which decay in every 30 years. So today half of it is still there. It will take another 30 years until it drops to 25%..

  • @Raumweiter

it is enough to pick up one dust particle under your shoes, carry it around and finally breath it in. That can cause cancer. Not so much the radiation at this place.

Aussie.Sunset the whole earth is a radioactive area it’s just the amount of radiation there. the more there is the less time you can spend before you starting getting sick. the reason why you aren’t dying in whatever place you are in the world which has a normal level of radiation is because your body is evolved to be able to withstand that amount. say for example he stayed in the ted forest where it was 2500. if he stayed there for like 2 days he would probably die to my knowledge( might be more complicated).
