Exploring Abandoned Servers in Old Minecraft

I explored some Alpha and Beta 1.7.3 Minecraft servers that are still up giving a tour around them and looking at all the cool builds. Most of them have little to no players left which was sad to see although the last two had some more activity. If you think any of them are cool I recommend going to visit them for yourself!
Server IP addresses:
Alphaplace.net (beta 1.1_2)
Alphaanarchy.net (beta 1.2)
Alwaysalpha.net (alpha 1.2.6)
Oldschoolminecraft.net (beta 1.7.3)
mc.retromc.org (beta 1.7.3)

I feel the same way. I had a building contest on my modern 1.20 SMP a while back and the theme was beta 1.7.3 style. It was pretty fun and now there's an entire district on the server with a beta theme, and it looks more interesting than the other builds on the server.

Hi, Head admin of alphaplace here, glad you enjoyed both servers, usually we get around 3 - 5 (10 or above on some days) players a day, not exactly abandon, unless your comparing it to modern servers then yeah maybe. cool video. Also to note OSM and RMC are quite active as well. All three servers are good.

I agree with what you said about it being kinda sad about the empty servers. Seeing all these builds that people dedicated days and weeks to with their friends while having a great time, their community now scattered to the wind and builds sitting mostly forgotten on an empty server on Minecraft, eventually never being visited again. All these memories lost to time makes me nostalgic for a time I never took part in. Thanks for posting this.

I've been part of communities in games that have eventually moved on, but you're right, it just isn't the same afterwards @NeverObsolete64 . Minecraft shows the very real impact of those communities on its world with building, which makes the loss of community feel a little more real than other games that consist of worlds/maps that are static, regardless of whether people are on or not. I think that's why Minecraft has a unique sense of sadness that hit me in this video despite never playing on random MC MP servers, though Kaktus is right that it allows people to take inspiration years later.

Yeah i thought and felt the same. About half way through the video i imagined myself going through and looking at all the amazing things that took weeks or months to create and how almost nobody ever sees it... But i then realized that the server is still running despite having almost 0 players is nice to think about because those massive structures and monuments are still being honoured/respected in a way. All of these servers having almost no players really have no reason to continue running, but they do and the memories made in them will live on

I remember back when the game first came out, maybe around 2012 or 2013, I played on a really cool anarchy server. It wasn't very well known, but it had a solid 50 or so players that were active on it. I became good friends with a lot of the players and we even had our own guild and had a really cool base inside a mountain a couple thousand blocks from spawn. I think I played on there religiously for a year or more. From what I remember, the server host died in an accident and 2 days later the server was just gone. All that time, all those people met and relationships were suddenly just gone. I played on and off since then, but the day that server was gone so was my appetite for Minecraft. Even today, I still occasionally wish I could just join that server one last time.

There's something special about how old MC servers elicit this feeling of liminality and that sense of wonder that exploring ancient ruins gives. Somehow the old builds in an abandoned server gives off this feeling of deep time, like it aggregates value, lore and history to the world. I would really like to replicate this in a server with friends, playing for years until at long last we mostly stop playing and all that's left are the memories imprinted on the ruins we left behind, like in that Shelley's poem: "Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away."

something about old school megabuilds. Its before designs got hyper complicated and detailed. Mind you the current designs people make are works of art but there was something special about seeing huge structures with only 1-2 design aspects repeated. Also, paths. The older style way of connecting builds together with paths in a close proximity as people built out is probably the most nostalgic part. We almost never see that style anymore.

This is so eerie to look at. I kinda relate to these servers because I used to run a server back in Beta 1.7.3/1.8 and I still have it (altought now it's a private, up-to-date and not a public server) and the difference in architecture and how we used to build is very nostalgic and reminicent of the servers I saw in this video

The funny thing is that those servers aren't actually old for the most part. OSM runs since like 2019, AlphaPlace since 2020. I think the oldest still-running legacy version server is RetroMC and it was founded in like 2014

i never got to experience the alpha/beta days of minecraft during my childhood, but seeing these chill videos showcasing them made me feel a sense of nostalgia ive never even experienced before, thus i cant imagine what its like to be part of the community back then these servers are like relics to me, i hope they can be preserved for as long as possible! they really are impressively made and formed. hope everyone who was part of these servers are doing well today and still creating! side note: your videos are so chill by the way, they help with my insomnia 👍

What I miss about old Minecraft was how simple everything was. I find modern Minecraft so complicated that it's not even fun anymore, and hasn't been in years. One of these days I'm gonna get back on my 360 and just enjoy the little things like the tutorial world.

There was a specific balance that always hit me the best with servers of the pre-1.8beta era. Places that had a nice spawn, but it wasn't huge - you could still explore them for a few moments and feel nicely secluded in a crafted place. But both the spawn and the server wasn't full on developed to the point where it felt like so much of history has already been written yet. There was always a sense of non-purpose felt when walking around the first thousand block range from spawn and everywhere was already picked out and processed. The only server I played back then that catered that feeling was the old SMP Blocktopia server, which was a community I heavily enjoyed playing in with their classic 0.30 servers - while I played those Zombie Survival & Lava Survival servers the most, the beta SMP server still has the fondest memories to me for just the feel I had interacting with what was there. Making my own basic house, and exploring what other people were currently making; usually with the builders offline due to my aussie timezone. Also a plugin I really missed from those days was like a treasure hunting one. You'd craft a compass, right click it, and then it'll point you into a direction and tell you how close you are to a chest of some generated goods to take. It was probably one of the main contributors that got me into a passion for exploration.

Thanks for the comment, it is a shame that those servers are mostly gone now but a lot of the community has changed. That compass feature is really cool as well, I guess they sort of added it to the main game with the treasure maps in the newer versions

After i had that done i had claimed an area by the Rocky (Dirty stone?) Biome warp where you fight saiyan saga mobs built up a shop with auto furnace and put shop signs on the chests so people could buy my products (even a little repair service where id work on Scouters), i was able to make quite abit of money and was able to buy a plot in west city and another in another city as a vacation home too 😅

I find this interesting in a sad, sort of lonely type of way. These old servers still being active after so much time has passed. Makes me regret deleting my worlds. I didn't play Minecraft on PC till I was like 16-17 years old, most of my Minecraft experience came from the old Xbox 360 days. I played alot with my dad, sister and brother when we were way younger. My dad initially bought the game back when it freshly released to console, and it was mind blowing to all of us...in a fun adventurous way. We would assign tasks like building, material grabbing, farming and the like to each other every in game day. Occasionally my siblings and I would sneak up and play late and night into the early morning on weekends, and our dad would join us when he woke up. Or it'd be the other way around lmao. The last world my dad and siblings played on still exists. He hast played Minecraft since I was like 13-14 years old, about 9 years or so (he says he doesn't like it anymore) and has long since moved to Playstation, but I have access to his old Microsoft account, so every once in awhile I pop in. I left him a sort of happy/sad farewell about him not playing anymore. I hope he see's it one day. That one world we all had played on has so many memories attached to it. So many more could have been made if he had picked it up again.
