Exploring Abandoned Game Servers

Ойын-сауық

A dead and abandoned game can mean all sorts of things depending on who you ask. A game with zero players? A game without a community? An online game that doesn't receive updates anymore.
I'm going to be exploring some games that have either been left behind by their community or their creators.

    Thanks for stopping by VP. I haven't been active on the game for a hot minute but I'm the creator of Chimerock. I didn't think anybody outside the tiny VP community would ever see it, so it was really cool seeing it here lol. That house you walked through with the luminol on the walls was originally my OC's house before i decided to rebuild it in another part of the city. (he's actually the 2D sprite laying his head on the table at the Waffle House lol) The drawing on the walls are of nearby buildings in and around the CR area. There was a story i was trying to hint at but i never finiMAYWOOD NEVER EXISTEDshed it Also that grid texture room under the house isn't anything interesting. that's just an artifact of me trying to figure out the layout of the actual house above. that house was the first thing i built in VP so i was still learning the ropes. However there is something you might like in the basement of version 2 of the house. Its south of spawn, across the highway. And no i don't mean the plants lol

    Abandoned games are infinitely more creepy purely for the fact that people one day just decided to stop playing. One day the servers dipped in numbers until the final person logged off for good, never to return. Its eerily to abandoned irl properties and feels almost like you're exploring another world untouched by man- or in the game's case- untouched by the sands of cyberware.

    The... empty feeling and the fact that it's dying does provide an somber, but also oddly beautiful experience; somehow, despite not being made for the experience, the game manages to do what games like The Long Drive seek to accomplish: immerse someone into a solemn wonder. Perhaps it's because we know that it used to be lively, that it was _not_ meant to be this. Maybe it's the fact that it will soon no longer be available that does it. But regardless, I both agree that it's sad that the game is being shut down, and yet find a kind of beauty in the days it has left.

    While I'm not personally into any virtual-worlds, Virtual Paradise sounds super interesting! We hear a lot of these old virtual worlds getting abandoned, on the brink of shutdown and only some dedicated users keeping them alive, so a game like that maintained by its community, keeping that old-school vibe makes perfect sense! Definitely sounds like it'd be more flexible and sustainable in the long run.

    @@graystripe2821 And what's the point of this game? I say that because i alreays dreamed of a roleplay game where you could live your life just like SAMP or some old Arma 3 mods. But here there's isn't anyone sadly.

  • @graystripe2821

    @graystripe2821

    3 ай бұрын

    @@a.thiago3842 The point of Virtual Paradise really is that it's primarily a creative platform to let others build or make things within it, and everything Sacrow showed in his video was made by someone at some point either as a small project, or a larger scale one. To put it in perspective, VP itself as a platform is the hobby of a single guy who develops it in his free time, and it just so happens that a small handful of other people are interested in using it too, albiet not on a consistent basis, which has always been the case. Something else to keep in mind when viewing VP is that it has, and always has had a very small community since it's start too, as it's a pretty niche thing in my eyes. Sure, role playing could be possible in some aspects within VP, which would be interesting to see, but its not the main focus of what the developer is aiming for, so the platform itself doesn't have exclusive features that facilitate that sort of gameplay, as RP is a rather broad scope for something thats being developed as a hobby.

    One of my favorite activities when I was younger was finding recycled minecraft servers. See, back in the day, if you went to a server renting business and bought a server for a time, they would just change the spawn location of an old one, and give you admin access. This meant you could find old structures, tunnels, and even functional shops and such that used the sane plugins as the current version of the server

    3:00 It's a semi-descent way to always get a player base by having games online only. The problem is if you buy the game for $70.00 dollars and the servers get shutdown and you can't play the game any more then your out the money. What if you pre-purchase a game like this and never end up playing it? You lost your money and never got anything out of it. Also, what dictates a dead game exactly? A game could go from having 1,000,000 - 10,000 and no one would say a game with ten thousand players is dead. Or would if it's online be the number of servers that have been cut down. It would probably be the amount of active players, but there could still be thousands of people who play a game that no longer being updated and is released.

    31:50 To be fair maybe it's better that some games have a smaller community base. You could probably get small projects done and more easily organized. You can have people who are all on the same page about what they want the levels to look like. If you have people who aren't on the same page they can ruin the projects and create discourse.
