Exploring a remote Scottish island | Auskerry, Orkney Islands

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to episode two of my Summer Escape series. While many of us are still grounded due to COVID-19 I thought I'd share what I got up to last summer on the small Orkney island of Auskerry, where I grew up.
I hope you're enjoying the variety here on Rory on Air, but rest assured we will be returning to flying videos very soon!

Brilliant Docu series. Such a different life from ours in Switzerland but maybe that's why it has so much appeal? We just spent some days on Mainland Orkney last week, taking the ferry from Aberdeen and it was my favorite part of our Scotland trip. How do you feel about the cruise ship tourists flooding the mainland every other day? Of course, we are also tourists but were a bit shocked as it isn't the kind of traveling we prefer. Nonetheless, this video makes me want to return to Orkney and discover the islands a bit more.

Thanks for watching and I’m glad you had a great visit to Orkney. It’s a wonderful place and I can see why so many people want to see it via the cruise ships. I think it’s a mixed blessing. It does bring jobs and money for the community but it is also quite a strain on services and causes issues for some businesses. I can’t say I feel that strongly about it either way.

What a terrific short film. It’s a place I’d love to go but it’s important to limit the footprint - I imagine cruise ships stopping at other islands in Orkney both help the economy but then exhaust resources. Heli tours locally would be brilliant but the wildlife may not co-exist with it all that well. It seems such a honest lifestyle. Thank you for making this series, I’ve watched this three times myself now!
