Exploring a 70's Time Capsule

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This old truck embodies so many things I love: patina, uniqueness, personality, and a blue-collar swagger. I’m passionate about this stuff and I adore the opportunity to poke around a vintage machine and let it whisper it’s past.
I don’t know much about this ‘69-‘70 Kenworth w900 A model short hood. It’s got a set-back axle (a rare feature in that era) and some modifications have been done in it’s storied past. A reman Cummins hibernates under a faded fiberglass hood, and a home-built plywood center console still resides between the seats. What else can we learn about it? Let’s explore it together…
Filmed with the help of my third son Micah (who also adores antiques and trucking) we let the truck tell it’s own stories with a tad of commentary from me. I’m no truck historian so I could be incorrect on some of my observations!
Thanks for watching and supporting the Flannel Channel! If you like what you see; you know what to do.
Interested in interacting with me?? I don’t spend time in the YT comments section. You can find me at Instagram flannel_phi...

Aside from the Fact my Dad's 2 1976 Kenworth W900 Bicentennial Edition Aerodynes are OTR trucks, and are still in Pristine Condition both with over 5.5 Million miles on them. There is nothing better than Classic Working trucks.

That’s a Big Cam 1 or 2. They came out about 1980. Those fuel tank caps were a drag. They leaked water down the stopper style screw. Torsion bar suspension where rated about 34,000 lbs, so not a heavy speck truck to start of with. They were an expensive suspension to maintain. It doesn’t appear to have a frame insert under the 5th wheel either. I definitely had a sleeper when new. The passenger seat was from a “ Splender Interior “ which was an upgrade in the day. Had stripes. The headliner is an aftermarket add on, as it would have had a “ Cyclolac “ plastic one. High mount Kyser roof mount is typical for the day. I think the “ Grilldenser “ came soon after. A nice representation of what Kenworth had to offer back in the day. It’s a mid set front axle, a full set back would have had a front sump oil pan.

LUV this type of content, I believe those are sleeper mounts just ahead and behind the lift axle on the frame , for that time period obviously a crawl through, Cool ole W9 SBFA 👍👍👍👍

I believe those passenger side steps are made from deck boards out of a livestock trailer.

Hi from France, i'm 64 now, still driving,i'm originally from Australia. What i remember about those old conventionnel cabs was that you could wind-up or wind-doxn the passenger side window from the drivers seat....and they had gearsticks or three....

I drove a 72 needle nose KW 335 Cumins turned up a little , twin stick 4x4, with torsion bar suspension and it rode pretty good, better than the leaf springs most rigs had back in the day

From the looks of the cab it's never had a sleeper and yes it was a heavy haul truck. Love the W-9's.

A W900 with the setback front axle, not something that seemed to really catch on for KW back in the early 70's.

at 00:27 segment... that suspension was Kenworth's "Torsion Bar" suspension, also known by nickname "Torture Bar" because of it's stiff ride.

Surprised how clean the engine is. I was told the torsion bar suspensions rode very nice, you just have to keep the greased. Glad you like the idea of not modifying it with a long hood, new frame etc. This truck is to well kept to mess with it.

That's all they had then was crawl thru the window in the back of the cab probably rolled down. Torsion when it was loaded road fairly good. Lot better than a Hendrickson. I believe that's a standard hood not a set back axle.

No it’s a set back I got 2 standard hood trucks that vintage. The headlight buckets are flush with the grill on mine those are set back some from the front.

Question : do the serial numbers on the cab, and stamped on the frame rails match ? The number will start with a letter followed by 6 numbers, That’s how KW identified their trucks till the federal govt mandated 17 identifiers. I think it’s a truck cobbled together with what was laying around the yard.

I'd like to know if that Tractor had Brakes on the Steer Axle or not..... That thing ain't in all that bad of shape... I have worse looking Trucks than that on the Road now.... Being a 1969, I assume that would be an "A" Model KW, Correct?... Great Video!
