Howland was briefly a Naval Air Station, 1943-44, but most of the action took place well west of there. If it is an aircraft, given the general size and shape, it's perhaps more likely than not to be hers. Size and basic layout is roughly right (as much as you can glean from a sonargram from 16,000 feet above it). Only way to tell is with an ROV. We'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully someone with deep pockets will jump on this fairly quickly.

Wow! Amazing discovery! I been fascinated by the historical documentary of Amelia Earthart for decades. So many story about what had happen to her and her plane after WW II. Its been documented the scenario that now is coming out. So many explorers tried to look and find that plane of Amelia Earhart. Thank God.

1: Earhart and Noonan did not know Morse Code (could not understand the transmissions from the USCG Itasca). 2: Earhart took off the "radio directional antenna" (could not hear the direction of the Morse Code). 3: Noonan miscalculated location from being on the south side of the equator. 4: No water on Gardner Island (Nikumaroro) to survive. 5: Noonan may have been kill by sharks on Gardner.

@borntobewild9056 I do believe she had emergency gear and they are still inside the plane(or at least bits qnd pieces / remnants of the emergency gear is still preserved) her last words were something about a line and then she was heard saying "wait" quite frantically, I don't believe a seasoned pilot like Amelia would have acted frantically if she had to make an emergency landing on water, she knew what she was doing, we can't know for certain unless we can get a ROS(Remote Operated Submersible) down there, I for one hope Amelia's remains are in there so she can be brought to her homeland and be laid to rest properly.

Amelia Earhart’s plane was the Lockheed Electra L 10e. This was an early day airliner and later used in the war effort. If this plane is indeed an Electra L 10e, then it should be remembered that Lockheed built 149 of them. And let’s consider the Lockheed P38 Lightening. Same configuration, dual engine and duel tails. And it’s almost the same size, Less than 1 foot difference in length and only 3 feet difference in wingspan. Lockheed built over 3800 p38’s and many are lying on the bottom of the pacific. Honestly, their sonar images doesn’t show much of anything. It would be great if they can someday prove it’s her plane, then salvage it and put it in a museum where it belongs. I can’t even count how many times they’ve supposedly found her plane. Sorry guys… but you’ll need to come up with more proof than this.

This is precisely what the Japanese would have us believe so the story about Earhart and Noonan being murdered by the Japanese army will lose credibility. Many planes crashed and sank in that area between 1937 and 1945.
