► ABOUT THE ISLAND:
La Palma is also called “Isla Bonita”, the beautiful island, and is the greenest island in the Canary archipelago. The dense forests and rugged coastlines surrounding black sand beaches impress the visitor, as does the incomparable natural experience.
Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the island has numerous nature reserves, including the Caldera de Taburiente National Park inland. The lava flows reaching the sea have created a flat, rocky coastline with small bays surrounded by cliffs.
La Palma is small but very high, making it one of the highest islands in the world. One of its many high peaks is Roque de los Muchachos, which plays a leading role in astrophysics worldwide due to its modern observatory with avant-garde telescope systems.
The average temperature is between 16 and 21 °C, so La Palma can boast of a diverse landscape that captivates everyone - its artistic, historical and cultural heritage and traditions are also impressive. Of particular tourist interest are some of the island's ancient traditions, particularly the Carnaval de los Indianos and the Fiestas Lustrales, which take place every five years. This folk festival is also known as Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves (Descent of the Virgin from the Snows) and is celebrated with events and ceremonies during the first two weeks of July, the Major and Minor Festival Weeks. Particularly noteworthy is the dance of the dwarves.
