Thank you so much, Paul, for introducing me to yet another artist I somehow missed being exposed to previously. As she's female, I'm not surprised to find her on that list re historical patriarchy. I love that she was not only both artist and writer, but also label defying and worked in multiple forms of art. My favorite work among those shared is Birthday, hands-down. The body language, outfit, bareness and its location, the multitude of doors, their openness and angles, the colors and use of light, dark and perspective, all the details and symbolism, just make me want to gaze into it for as long as I can. I wish Paul had made this before the Dorothea Tanning was at the Tate was shown. I'm interested to hear she wrote poetry. I didn't know Tanning's story with as much detail as provided here, so this was quite interesting. I do like her work, but I often get it confused with that of Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), a Mexican-based artist of British origin, and Remedios Varo (1908-1963), a Spanish artist who like Carrington settled in Mexico, all three women working in a similar Surrealist idiom. Of Tanning's work illustrated in this upload, I find her 1942 painting 'Birthday' most engaging.

Her work reminds me a lot of that of Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), who was long based in Mexico, though British by birth. Carrington's work in turn often makes me think of that of Remedios Varo (1908-1963), a Spaniard who relocated to Mexico and had did have close association with Carrington.

I've long awaited a video of Dorothea. An outstanding, imagineering artist. She most certainly is underrated. A great shame that Phaidon didn't continue their video releases of art documentaries, and onto DVD, then BlueRay. My videos, which I bought many years ago, are quite knackered and having the former Phaidon releases on disc would have been treasured. The absence of these is annoying actually.

First and foremost thank you for responding to my rather presumptuous comment , on reflection I was as is often the case somewhat over the top . But I was so keen to bring to your attention that your exciting format is so right , there seems to me little point in messing about with it . At least in a radical perspective , you and I know from an artistic perspective there comes a point when the work is finished , yet the temptation to press on is all consuming . Now obviously this can reap some rewards , but in my case that basically amounted to obliterating my starting point . My humble apologies for upsetting the preverbal apple cart , but I’ve seen so many media outlets ruined by a rush to be all exclusive only to be forgotten about when the next big thing comes around Best wishes and kind regards as always 😀👍👍👍

Many thanks for your reply, there is absolutely no need for apologies. Friends also commented about there being too much to read and not enough time to read it. That has hopefully been addressed in the next video which will be about the Australian artist, Sydney Nolan. This format is intended for artists who are well known in their own countries, but who do not have the mega stardom of a Van Gogh or a Picasso.

Dorothea Tanning was a second rate artist. If Max Ernst had not been in her life, she would have died in total obscurity. She was impossible to work with and known for her disgraceful treatment of people and gallery staff. She was also known for criticizing the press releases from the galleries, insisting on a replacement written by her with inaccuracies and very obvious and irreparable grammar mistakes. She thought that her work surpassed many surrealists including Ernst. Her arrogance had no bound. During one of the shows that I helped curate, she asserted that her collectors and the public were going to buy all her work and the critics were going to finally recognize her greatness. None showed up, including people she claimed were her friends. Her nastiness wore out the few people she met through Ernst. It was a great relief when the show closed. The gallery owner apologized promising to listen to me next time.

Very interesting to get insights from someone that actually met her. Your observations open up lots of questions. They were married for 30 years and nothing I have come across suggests it was a difficult marriage, but outsiders wouldn't know. I wonder if the death of Max and the forty years she spent on her own afterwards, created a loneliness and self indulgence that wasn't apparent when the two of them were together. From her writings she did seem to have loved him.

Under rated according to who? Over rated by you with her bad compositions. Her inspiration, Magritte leaves her in the dust.
