Explaining Super Paper Mario

Ойындар

Imagine a Mario game where you are literally enslaved, fight terrifying inter-dimensional nightmare demons, witness a matter-collapse apocalypse of an entire universe, and oh by the way, meet freaking God.
That's Super Paper Mario and my Grambi is it an impressive spectacle of a Wii game.
When I tell you that Super Paper Mario is the highest selling game in the Paper Mario franchise, you might think that it would be the most tame and accessible game,
and I suppose there's some arguments for that being the case, it being the game that changed it's game-play and combat style from a turn-based RPG, into a side-scroller action-RPG, more akin to the more popular, mainline Super Mario 2-D platformers.
but no; the game we got is so so much more than that.
Super Paper Mario is by all accounts, a peak for the franchise in terms of storytelling, humour, characterization, game-play mechanics, and overall direction.
Where many who criticize the newer Paper Mario games that diverge from the traditional Mario RPG format cannot fault Super Paper Mario on is it's story, and ambitious design.
Sure maybe they prefer turn-based attacking, but no one can deny the quality and ingenuity of the adventure, itself.
And in fairness, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems were originally producing this for the Gamecube, so they already wanted to differentiate the game from the already existing Thousand Year Door.
And differentiate they did.
Because MAN, is this a weird one. Maybe still the weirdest.
Many MANY people have talked about this game, and they get some of the biggest reactions in terms of how funny, and genuinely fascinating this game is to play through.
And how deserving of these reactions Super Paper Mario is; it has achieved a cult-classic status, as the one that diverged from the previous Mario RPG style, but before the franchise began to shift in terms game-play direction quality.
And to be honest, I didn't have too bad a time with Sticker Star, and I think since, Colour Splash and Origami King have also been steps upward in terms of quality.
That being said though, nothing since or before Super Paper Mario was there any Mario game quite like it. It still stands out.
Heck its stands out amoungst all Wii games, or just Nintendo games in general. It's staggering.
Though it's interesting since there's such a critical preference towards Paper Mario and Paper Mario TTYD amoung the more hardcore fans; Super Paper Mario still doesn't get the love I believe it deserves.
And that extends beyond it's amazing story; it's unique mechanical design still creates a wonderful experience;
this game is a genius unfolding of the Mario universe, and the logic of video games as a whole.

Super Paper Mario is my single favorite game of all time. Something not mentioned but what I think is the core of this game is that every chapter is about a different kind of love, and that is what truly elevates it to the level of an imperfect masterpiece in my mind. There's a lot that I can say about its flaws, but that does not stop it from being so, so good in my eyes.

Bleck is a great big bad, Mimi is creepy and i love that, Chunks gives me some TF2 Heavy vibes and he’s great, Dimentio is terrifyingly weird but has such an amazing design. Also, can’t forget Nastacia and her devotion to the count while also hoping to better him at the end. This is such a fascinating video for me. I love Super Paper Mario as much at it seems you do, and I've always seen the game through the lens of each chapter being an exploration of different types of love, from parental love with the whole Luvbi story, to love of games with Francis, to love of a leader with the floro sapiens. I like looking at this because it discusses the immense good and bad that each kind of love can hold in people's lives, and I just find the game fascinating. It has its tedious moments, yes, but it will always have a special place in my heart as the first game in its genre that I ever played through (with my siblings, too! We had voice acting sessions while I played it through. It was fun as hell.) When I played the game and the story around Blumiere and Timpani (aka Count Bleck and Tippi) unfolded my heart broke. It was so sad. One of the reasons why it still lingers in the back of my head and pops up every now and then. The forbidden love, oh dear. Thank you for bringing me back to memory lane! 🧡

Honestly I think you hit one point on the nail: there was just nothing like the Storybook Paper Mario trilogy, that was something that was lost and still hasn't returned to this day, or has even at least been kept in the present. Genuinely one of my favorite games of all time, l cant stress enough how important this game is to me and like actually getting to play it was. The story, the characters, the music, even the post game content just goes to show how ambitious of a game this was, sure i might have some personal gripes with it on the terms of how some things appeared to me, but that's like hardly enough to sour my love for this game and I genuinely hope more people give this game a chance!!! One more thing, I always interpreted the whole Underwhere and Overthere dynamic to be a sort of interpretation of Greek and Christian takes on afterlife! The Underwhere being more Greek inspired because of the river Twigz, the Underchomp, hell, even Jaydes is a few letters away from Hades. But I honestly never thought of the interpretation of her being a sort of stand-in for Lilith! Meanwhile the Overthere is more straightforward, with the way the nimbi's talk, how Bonechill is pretty much a fallen angel and like how the place itself pretty much fits with our idea of Heaven. All in all, great video!! So glad that people are talking more and more about this game :D

The Overthere is more based on stereotypical renaissance imagery, and the nimbis speaking in Early Modern English is a comedic decision seeing as the Bible was written in Hebrew, but the Underwhere connections are definitely there. Also, the river fare is 4 coins, and 4 is associated with death in some cultures.

Yes, even moreso than Sticker Star. 2. Count Bleck is not as good a character as we're supposed to think he is. The fact that he's destroying all worlds... all because he lost his girlfriend. I mean I understand that it's because he sees life as cruel and meaningless now, but could you imagine if this happened EVERY TIME someone lost their girlfriend? And even though we're supposed to see him as the good guy in the end, the only reason he even reformed was because he found that Tippi was still alive. This would have worked MUCH better if he learned to move on from her BEFORE learning that she was still alive. And the worst part is that even after he turns good, he literally says that he DOESN'T APOLOGIZE FOR TRYING TO DESTROY ALL WORLDS! That literally eliminates all sympathy I ever had for him!

Hello randomly suggested channel. You are really good. Maybe I am again lucky to see a channel skyrocket? But about Super Paper Mario: It is really one of the most unique games I have ever played. But tbh, I never really got myself to actually play it through the end, the gameplay has been too annoying for me. Dimensio, MrL and.... Graf Knickwitz(thats his german name) are really interesting characters, going the same direction as Fawful. Really a shame that Intelligent Systems wont make a gamelike this with so much charm and character probably.

Super paper Mario was my first paper Mario. It was the beginning of the end of paper Marios quality. But that doesn't mean it was bad. It had that same charm and soul as the first two games. Maybe its not turned based but its solid.

Between this and Skyward Sword, the Wii had a ton of ingenious titles that went relatively unappreciated. In my opinion, what really messed this game up was actually just having "Paper Mario" in the title, because crazily enough there's actually NO paper aesthetic in the whole game. There's a strong 2D design, of course because 2D to 3D is a theme from the start. But never any paper like the first two games had. In fact, there's a strong "computerized" aesthetic I didn't even think about for the longest time. Maybe if it had been called "Super 2D Mario" or something, it wouldn't be looked down on as "That one Paper Mario sequel".

This is a great point. It's more like "Dimensional Mario" rather than paper. As well, as a fan of Skyward Sword, I couldnt agree more. The Wii has many beloved classics, and games that are heavily underrated.

Sticker Star and Colour Splash are at the bottom of the list just because the others are better. if you're interested, my ranking feom best to worst would be 1: Super Paper Mario 2: Thousand Year Door 3: N64 4: Origami King 5: Colour Splash 6: Sticker Star love the video by the way, great work!

I've always had a love for mario games that break the usual, overused plot (bowser kidnaps peach and mario has to get her back, yknow...). The rpg series was amazing, especially partners in time and bowser's inside story. Then one day I decided to buy this game to play on my old wii just to complete my paper mario collection. But holy hell do I regret that. No game has ever had me on the edge of my seat, frozen in shock, and literally crying, like this one did. I didn't even finish it before it became not just my favorite game, but the most incredible story I've ever experienced.
