Super Paper Mario - A Flat Game with a Deep Story | The Completionist

Ойындар

Super Paper Mario was a deviation of the Paper Mario RPG formula. When announced it was going that direction, it worried a lot of fans. Turning the game into a blended platformer with some RPG elements lead to a very creative Mario game. Navigating the 2D and 3D axis of the game is a lot of fun and has plenty of new opportunities to hide secrets. And the plot of this game actually gets a bit dark. Luigi, your own brother, gets brainwashed and because a villain known as Mr. L. Plenty more to discuss in my Super Paper Mario review!

So glad you did this one, this was my first "rpg' game and first game where i learned about hp and quests and etc. It will always be one of my absolute favorites. I enjoy turn base combat, but this game was the best paper mario for me (and ive gone back to compare as im older) Count Bleck was awesome, great music. This game is truly a classic for me.

I died a bunch of times. A lot of enemies hit really hard and really quickly, and since it's not turn-based, you often had no time to think or react, and very little mercy-invincibility. I remember the mammoth things absolutely destroying me. but what was interesting is you could do the same to them. it was oddly freeing having the ability to slaughter enemies totally at your own speed. I'm surprised he didn't say anything about the weiiird design of all the NPCs and original enemies in this game, how they kinda clash with the returning mario ones, how they're meant to all be from different dimensions yet they seem clearly visually unified (and one of these dimensions is EVERYONE'S afterlife, so..)

It has more or less the difficulty dependent on the player. You can easily get to level 100+ in the first level 1-1 just doing clever jumping on the rock spitting or get a few level ups just repeating efficient areas for a few minutes. If you do that the game looses any challenge there is, if you just go along it can be more difficult at times.

I'd like to point out how Super Paper Mario was truly ahead of it's time. Super was the first game to bring back this sort of self aware humor, which we haven't seen since the Mother series. Not only that but it also had a lot of this dark humor, where sometimes they pushed it too far. This is such an underrated gem that deserves more praise than it gets.

If we're excluding RPGs, then yeah. If we're including them, then no. Six words - Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. That game was brutal in terms of how everything was depicted, and it featured some of the most monstrous villains to ever appear in a Mario game. TTYD had its fair share of dark moments, too, especially with the backstory behind the Shadow Queen and what not. Heck, even a game as goofy as Superstar Saga had some really grim moments, too. Freaking Woo Hoo Hooniversity and Bowletta...

SPM had a good story, but honestly it didn't have to be a Paper Mario game throwing the series into a cycle that would create chaos... It's really not even the same game genre! One is a turn-based RPG with platformer elements while the other is a straight-up platformer with RPG elements. (Kind of like Brave Fencer in a way...) I feel about Super Paper Mario in the same way that some people (Lunatics) still consider Nuts & Bolts to be a decent BK game.

As someone who found the the purer Mario RPGs to just be way more repetitive as a whole and significantly less enjoyable than SPM (and yes, I'm not really an RPG fan)... I can't respond in any way to comments like "Super paper always had awful gameplay. Very surprised people thinks super is the best." but to shake my head and snicker a little once I get over the mild feelings of disgust, but that's alright. No hard feelings. I'm kind of used to having the minority opinion on things.

Seeing Timpani and Blumiere's past unfold throughout the game, and seeing how it affects the present, as a kid was one of the most defining experiences for me. Not only for how I experience entertainment, stories, and overarching plots, but character stories as well. With me learning to love backstories and character ideals, motives, personalities, and their growth, I'm able to get extremely invested in those characters, in a good way, and in turn the story too. Those parts have become my favourite parts of stories, and I'm really grateful that I'm able to experience things in this way. There have been parts, especially in the mountain area, where I was asking myself why I'm choosing to put myself through the tedium of slowly and clunkily stomping through snow in a white-out, when I could be spending my time playing other games or doing sth else altogether. I remember as a child, I ADORED chapter 2. It was unique and I would at least play super paper mario at least twice a year so I’d forget all of the prisoner secrets and would have to discover everything all over again. But, then Mimi came.. She TERRIFIED me with the fact her head would crack as it turned around, her eyes would turn black. Spider legs would pop out of the sides of her head. And the most eerie part, was that she’d chase you and whenever she entered the same room, the screen would pan over to her which made it horrifying. Honestly, I had my dad defeat her whenever I played and even when I’m older, she doesn’t scare me but just... unsettled me greatly.

Super Paper Mario: A Masterpiece of Storytelling. Better than TTYD in my opinion. I actually care about all of the random characters in the worlds I visit instead of forgetting about or flat out ignoring them. The villain is actually interesting. (Grodus was boring, as well as the Shadow Queen. They had no likable or memorable traits besides wanting to take over the world).

Very late to this video but I heavily enjoyed it! I’ve always been a serious super paper mario lover and have replayed the game an ungodly amount. I’ve played Almost all of the paper mario games except the very first one, and Somehow Super Paper Mario is still a fan favorite. This completionist review was amazing! I do understand the bowser meta, and that takes away from the gameplay as soon as you can really play him. But if you ever feel like playing this game again and not going for the 100% just try playing without bowser as much as possible lmao. I recently played and I was feeling semi bored of just using bowser for boss fights for his double damage, so I just mainly used mario peach and Luigi, the game feels much more difficult and a serious challenge in the flip and flopside 100 trials. But overall your review was amazing! I haven’t seen a good as review of this game in a long while so props man!

I remember being like 9 when this game came out and having the time of my life with it. I would go on cheats.com or some other such website to try and learn all of the secrets, and beyond that I'd look at any supplementary books. I thought the game was super hard because again I was literally 9 so I only tried to finish all of the Pixl collecting. Plus I would get up at the crack of dawn to play the game. This video legit brought me back dude. That said 0/10 review you talked about how great the characters were but failed to even mention Dimentio, the scariest Mario villain I think ever. Plus his absolutely bopping theme song.

This is and stays one of my favorite Mario games (galaxy is the Nr. 1 💖). The story is awesome, you're totally right, the story was nothing I've expected, it was something completely new and we also got a whole new set of amazing enemies, the way that you could change the perspective is whole level up, there were so many puzzles and secrets that let you spend (as a kid) a really long time on this game. I was sooo extremely sad back then when I've completed the game. I didn't want it to end. And what other game let's you play in hell and save a whole world like literally?! Not only from bowser but the whole freaking whole got blank and empty and you had to save it!

Yes! So glad someone finally said something positive about this game, its the best Mario in terms of plot imo. And spoiler Fun Fact . . . . . Dimentio is the only Mario villain to canonically kill Mario.

As jaydes says, Mario wasn't actually killed. Dimentio does the same thing to himself and Luigi in Ch 8-3 but neither of them die.

Super Paper Mario did have a really good story. It also had nothing to entice me to come back to it once I was done with the main run. I'm glad I played it and simultaneously glad you ground your way through it so I didn't have to.
