I just love the fact they are named after a mistranslated deicide song title, there is no song called "his infernal majesty" in deicide's back catalogue, turns out the record they took their name from is a bootleg.

Very cool that you finally made this video! I feel as though HIM is a band that is very overlooked and/or misunderstood by the vast majority of metal heads. Razorblade Romance is also one of my fave all time albums and I'm someone who owns 15,000+ CD's, listening to music of all genres (and creating it too) on a daily basis, religiously and obsessively. VV's solo album was great too and I was fortunate enough to see that tour last October and grab a signed LP! Anyhow, keep up the great work over there Wyatt \m/

I remember hearing their cover of Don’t Fear the Reaper when I was maybe 11 or 12 and LOVED it, but for whatever reason, I never really took the time to delve much into them, despite them touching on some of my favorite niches of music. Maybe after this, I’ll have to take more time to give them a proper listen.

I was in high school when I bought one of those "Beauty in Darkness" DVDs, which included the Wicked Game video (Greatest Lovesongs version). At that moment I thought they'd done something really cool with that song, but didn't care to look further into the band. Some months later, I stumbled across the Join Me video on a music TV show and I was completely flabbergasted by Valo's voice and the song's main piano melody. That's when I immediately bought their first three albums on Ebay (they hadn't released Love Metal yet) and become obsessed with them until this day. Thank you for this wonderful video, Wyatt.

HIM was weirdly introduced to me by my Mom. She's not really into new music and modern goth rock at time. She was very much in 80s pop music and classic rock and punk. So it was weird at the time my mom showed me a new band what sounded like them. Never was a huge fan but I was alslways thought they had a great aesthetic and image. Definitely a stand-out band what will always be remembered.

never liked them much but I did also always think they were quite unique. No objections, I get why people dig it even if it's not for me. I saw them like Type O if you readjusted the balancing dialing out some of the heavy metal and more of the romantic sentamentality in, so it was interesting to hear the description of their origin and hearing the music in the background which echoes very much of Type O

First of all respect for this detailed retrospective of HIM's career! I wouldn't call me a fan, but they composed many good songs during their career. Some don't like them because of their so called "mainstream sound" but they never sold out. They always made that kind of music they wanted to and the profit came second. Their sound never meant to be "metal" it should be a mix of softer and harder sound and the heartagram was the representation of this interplay (as also for the duality of opposites like love and death or ying and yang). My favorite album is also "Rezorblade Romance", but I dislike "One Last Time" it doesn't fit with the other songs (the alternative version "The 9th Circle" is better and should have been instead of this on the album). One correction I have to make. The demo "Witches and other Night Fears" was never released, so nobody ever heard it (some think that the hidden track no. 66 on Greatest Love Songs vol. 666 is a cutout from this demo). The cover that you showed belongs to the demo "This is Only the Beginning" from 1995. It has 6 songs, which they recordet from 1994 until 1995. It has the demo versions of "Stigmata Diaboli", "Wicked Game" and "The Heartless" on it. All this songs were re-recordet for the later releases (some many times like "Wicked Game"). "The Phantom Gate" was completely revised to "Yor Sweet Six Six Six".

Back in my middle school and early high school days all the goth kids were covered in HIM merch. I was far more of a metal guy (outside of being married to hip-hop), because that's what the soundtrack was during football workouts. I've never been curious enough to see what the hype is about, the doom metal album from HIM seems interesting though.

Their vocal harmonies are great in this song and they sound almost like cellos . You said that the album from 2005 was HIM's best selling ... well it can be also because this song was so popular . At least in my country - Poland - the music video for Bittersweet was played all the time on Mtv .

I always enjoyed their style of fashion which I call Lazy Goth, a mix of Iggy Pop, Peter Murphy and Ian Astbury. Only Ville Valo could wear a Beanie with the tighest blue jeans you'll ever see and mix it with a conductor's tail coat and Chuck Taylor's with a half smoked cigarette hanging off his lip and make it look cool. But it was also the mix of metal and gothic that had me as an instant fan of them. It was what i wanted and need to hear at the time around 2002 when i first heard them. Nu-Metal was on it's way out Metalcore and NWOAHM were just emerging and I was pretty bored with both of them and needed something new but also easy to listen to.
