Through hearing you talk about this again, I realized that the reason the dragons aren't overthrowing their human overlords is because even though they are shown to be intelligent and stronger, the author probs believes in human superiority as it applies to evolution etc so they can't even imagine the idea that humans could be lesser than other species. This is just a theory though

As someone who has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome I got so excited for half a second before I remembered that this book is bad
Oh, I think I get it! The author wanted the protagonist to start out as a member of the “bad guys” but not know it, hence the twist at the end. That’s why the college is so needlessly cruel. I’m going to guess that in the next book, we’re going to see the griffin people act humanely to contrast against it and the rest of the series will be about dismantling the empire or whatever. I bet there’s even a second twist where we learn that the dragons are even under some sort of mind control or weakened somehow, hence the strange powerset.

So, funny thing about rubber. Mesoamerica has had rubber since 1600 BC. Not trying to defend this book in any way, but having rubber/latex is not quite as anachronistic as one may think to a past/fantasy setting. As for the paper, Mesoamericans used something called amate paper which is essentially bark and not the cellulose fiber stuff we commonly think of as paper. Side note, do we know if the parchment they used in the book was made from hide or cellulose? Cause the term is applied to both kinds (if I remember correctly) and the cellulose one is at least *similar* enough to maybe be a reference to amate. Do I think either of these things influenced this writer? Gods no. But I did think both of these things were interesting tidbits, and the more you know!
I like how much he makes you laugh. I think all of us escaped fundies knew so many married couples where the husband ignored and belittled all of his wife's interests and passions while she was like "you must submit to your husband even though he never listens to you and seems to disdain your existence! 38:39 The "dragon rider" and "griffith flyer" distinction for some reason reminds me of those 80s cartoons based on toylines, where there's a good team and an evil team, both have toys with the same gimmicks but with different names. Like the good team will habe a guy who "bonded with a tiger" and the evil team will have a guy who "enslaved a panther" and both are just an action figure sat over a toy cat but painted different... is very silly

Im 4'10" which was too small for the air force.
I'm still stuck on the fact that they have rubber. What's it made of? Rubber trees grow in a South Asian area, I think that Violet would complain about the heat with her pale, delicate but tuff self. HOW DO THEY MAKE RUBBER BOOTS? IS THIS WAR A RUSE TO GET THAT SWEET SWEET RUBBER TREES? WHO HARVESTS THESE TREES? I NEED TO KNOW 🤯
My question is, why doesn’t she get an invisibility power or some stealthy power to become a spy/thief to steal information from the enemy? Its a natural way to use her scribe abilities due to handling information and her large memory. With a black dragon that’s the smartest and is probably hard to see at night and a dragon that can stop time, that would’ve been so cool
You two are couple goals! You just seem like each other’s best friends and I love that for you guys 💕 please make “explaining shitty books to my husband” a recurring segment lol

Man I really hate this trend of like, establishing our main girl as cool and tough by making her kill a lot of people with no consequence, it just makes characters feel so inhuman I guess? Like no matter how tough you are, a teenage girl suddenly having to kill is gonna be traumatizing for her, it’s gonna affect her emotionally. It also just establishes no value for human life except for our Main Characters
"He's massive. I look up and up..." Bro lemme tell u, either the author overestimated how tall 6'4 really is, or mc is tragically short. Two of my sisters ex-boyfriends were 6'5 and 6'6 respectively, and I'm 5'4. The only time I had to crane my neck up to look at them was when I was directly in front of them or beside them. For perspective, the top of my head is about chest level/shoulder level. Which is pretty much how any one foot difference is on a person. Your head ends where their shoulders begin. Standing a couple feet away is still only a minor incline for your neck. And ten feet away? They don't even look that tall. That's just how perspective works. Edit: so dude being apparently 6'4, and homegirl "not even reaching his collar bone" (which kinda sounds like she wasn't even close) would put her under 5'4 for sure. Girl's gotta be like 5 feet tall I swear.
@bluester7177
8 ай бұрын
As someone who is 5'2, sometimes you do have to crane but in most situations is as you said, you're close to the person, I'm a tattoo artist so I have more problems, sometimes I need leverage.

You know what would have been such a great way to have us learn about the other characters? Having Violet have to come up with clever and different ways to defeat them. Like, lets just take away the brother book and give her more agency and knowledge of the place she literally lives in, and have her utilize secret passage ways, unknown cracks and crevices, etc to sneak around and spy on her opponents. That way she can learn what makes them tick and how to psych them out, take them out before the fight, distract them, etc, while we, the audience, also learn about them and gain any type of emotional connection to them. That way we actually see Violet's intelligence and her resourcefulness instead of just being told by the author that she's soooo smart.
I think it would be interesting if the main characters find out that the war is actually between the dragons and the griffins and both sides are just using humans as pawns/cannon fodder. I doubt the author will be going in that direction.
I was having a crummy night and this made me legitimately laugh out loud. Thank you and Carlos for your sacrifice.

Carlos sees RIGHT THROUGH this book. 🤣
You two are oddly wholesome and adorable and I full on snorted my drink when your husband said, "the clit, what's that?" Also, in honour of you, I actually used the word clit in my latest love scene. Boy, I hope none of my students ever read that sentence above. This is not the Kate Macdonald you're looking for...

this video is pure gold also what I found annoying is that Violet is never doing anything, the plot conveniently comes to her, she is such a passive character which is boring. At least the thing with the list, who she´s gonna fight... it had been so cool if she was to go out herself, doing a little espionage mission so she actually accomplishes something instead of getting told by a random book and the action happening offscreen. Violet never thinks for herself but I think thats intentional bc Mrs Yarros thinks her readers are stupid and treats them as such. Violet is the most special snowflake character I have ever met, no flaws and somehow she is good at fighting but at the same time she´s not? It makes no sense. You can have a weak character but we could have followed her progression, how she actively gets stronger but no, that happens offscreen and she is still somehow weak? But at the same time skilled. And Xaden? he is the most one dimensional character I´ve ever met. I could not describe his character like whats his motivation? what are his flaws? does he have little ticks that make him special? Something, but no, he is 6´4 and hot. Oh and shadow powers, which are also so plot convenient. And where is this book enemies to lovers? It is dumbasses to lovers, like Xaden never tried to kill Violet, he helps her. Why? Plot convenience: their dragons are bonded so he just... gives up and loves her all of a sudden and they trauma bond (which is never a good option to bond characters), but other than that, no chemistry (the spicy scenes were fine, I´ve read way worse things) There is no tension, this book tries to make the stakes high, everyone could die any moment but Violet has THE BIGGEST PLOT ARMOR, so I never feel threatened, I know nothing is gonna happen to her, so why should I feel interested. The worldbuilding is catastrophic, so I don´t get started on that, but rubber shoes? But no guns, no modern inventions? And if they have rubber shoes, do they have factories? Maybe they should add a scientists quadrant to the war college, there is enough space at the riders quadrant. This book could have been great if she had an editor who actually edited her book and helped her to construct a better story. Oh and please someone give Violet Head&Shoulders in the next book, it´s concerning how often her scalp tickles like girl please be for real.
Carlos is fucking funny dude lol
"Big Ass Black Dragon" sounds like a Yugioh card.
