The horse-and-skeleton could be a Nuckalavee! It's from the folklore of the Orkney Islands in Scotland and they are supposed to be responsible for basically everything bad imaginable: droughts, famine, pestilence, wilted crops, sickness and disease, you name it.

Mark my words: Messmer won't be the final boss. He's like Artorias in the Dark Souls DLC. A super important figure, but not the one who's actually behind everything. I wonder who we'll be fighting at the end. Miquella maybe?

I'm definitely inclined to agree, but Gael fills a similar role but was actually the final boss. Though, I don't think they'd show gameplay footage of Messmer's bossfight if he was the actual final

Messmer may be similar to Lady Maria. She was the cover art boss, but was instead the penultimate boss, and the final boss was Orphan of Kos

The head of the Nuckelavee boss (fused horse and rider) reminds me of the stellar enemies like Astel and the Fallingstar Beast, it looks like the spherical gemstones they have.

I think it's a new type specific to sleep, dreams, nightmares etc because it looks like it's in the same place as the purple area that the masked sleeping person is. You can see identical flowers in the back and the color scheme is pretty much the same.

Btw, either the Famitsu or IGN Japan interview confirmed Messmer to be a child of Marika and said that you also need to have beaten Radahn to do the DLC

Oh interesting! I think I saw something about Marika, but this is first hearing about beating Radahn. Makes sense since plenty of normal game progression is tied to some Shardbearer progress

My first unadulterated thoughts were that to was a grafted horror displaying all the crucible symbols but when you pause, you see the trick that's been pulled, seems like a couple of omens warriors

Messmer the impaler… what if he was the one who impaled Marika (his first flame in the hand is black and reddish, same as the spear on Marika’s belly) because he resented her for preferring Miquella and Malenia over him? as i always say, there were 3 butterflies in game, nascent (miquella and his connection to st. trina), rotten (malenia and her connection to rot) , and smouldering (messmer and his connection to red flames?)…

Isn’t it more likely that the Elden Beast’s responsible for impaling her? It has a grab attack where it crucifies and impales you with multiple spears. Then again, its spears are golden.

You seemed to have ignored the opening statement of the trailer. I definitely brings the possibility of Miquella becoming an enemy later on.

I don’t think Miyazaki will pull another Gael. Seems like Miquella is your maiden in this Shadowland. I think Miquella will be your guide as it says this in the description.

Nah, to become a god or a ruler and instill a specific order, you have to betray a lot of people and principles. That's a constant in GRR's writing and in DS Lore imo. Miquella is definitely a baddy in some way, we'll just had to wait and see how

@@OD91MJ We only need Marika to be the vessel of the Elden Ring. The DLC will not give new endings. It's already stated.

The man with the brooch reminds me of what the Dothraki did to Daenerys Targaryen brother in Game of thrones, "fitting" him with a golden crown. Like this could have a been a punishment to the brooch man, put him under the crucible and pour sap into him creating this weird thing jutting out of his head.

So one thing I'm wondering about is the Gloam Eyed Queen...wasn't she the rival of Marika? If thats the case and assuming we are following Marika's rise to power then she should be in this DLC no? Maybe shes the secret boss that was mentioned...maybe its our Tarnished, not Maliketh, who actually defeats her and that act gets misattributed to Maliketh, akin to the Artorias legend from DS1. Or maybe she like corrupted Messmer or something...he does have a flame and while its not the black flame from the main game, it does have some black around the edges of the red. He also has a vaguely Godskin vibe to his design...idk im totally guessing here but i feel like the Gloam Eyed Queen needs a bit of explaining and this shadow realm would be a good place to do it.

I also believe there's a good chance she is here. But they said this DLC does not take place in the past or future but the present. So it wouldn't be the Tarnished who defeats her in the past. Thats still Maliketh

@@broopont2239 good point. After I wrote the comment I was actually thinking that she might have been banished there. If I remember correctly none of the items that mention her specifically refer to her death just her defeat so you can presume she's still alive and if that's the case then there's no better place to banish her than a shadow realm. IDK I'm probably reaching a bit but I just wanna know what's up with her lol.

It's safe to assume all of her children are rivals to Marika, and that all her siblings were as well if she ever had any. Hell, Radagon could be Marika's sibling, her champion, just like Malenia is Miquella's champion. Very GRRM

Hopefully they add in some way to access the warp to it within a more decent point of the game, cause having to go through either method to get to Mohgwyn Palace and then beat Mohg just to get access seems a bit much

You can access Mohg without progressing past Liurnia. Just follow Varre’s questline and defeat Godrick and Rennala and you’re there.

I don't see the problem, a lot of players probably missed the whole area, so it's a good way to promote it. Plus, once you defeat Mohg a site of grace appears right in front of the cocoon, so there's no hassle

I hope Messmer isn’t some pansy who dies midway through the expansion considering he’s the poster boy. Give him some cool lore which explains his title of “The Impaler”, and how he came to rule the Land of Shadows. Who knows? Maybe he might fill in a similar role to DS3’s Nameless King; The firstborn son of a god who helped in their wars of conquest and expansion but who committed a grave cardinal sin that resulted in him being beaten, exiled and expunged from history. But this is all purely speculation on my part. I’m very eager to see what From and Miyazaki has been cooking up their sleeve.

Thanks goodness for Souls creators like you, MadLuigi. There have been so many people jumping on the hype train with ridiculously inane takes and theories since Wednesday, and your methodical and fact based approach is really appreciated.

I think it is going to me more Crucible oriented with some evidence of Godwyn. The guy with the Rune in his body has the final boss vibe for me. He pulls it out fights. Then it transitions to final phase of some shadow land Beast or something. Also the Sun is actually a curse type thing in ER. Look at Dungeater. He has a sun crest on his armor.

The lord of miquella could also be Ensha, "It is said that the bones belong to an ancient lord - the soulless king. The lord of the lost and desperate, who was known as Ensha." (quote from the royal remains armor). This description fits very well with Miquella's personality, or what he projects, being some kind of savior for the outcasts.

In the demonstration of the throwing knives, what is the fabric hanging in the background? Is it supposed to be one of those big skeletons in the chairs, but like super slumped over? It looks like clothing fabric. Also, is the hog rider guarding some kind of miniature shadow erdtree? Surely that’s not the actual tree itself? It sort of looks like roots coming out of the ground. Finally, I’m shocked nobody’s mentioned the moon looming so largely in the background. This DLC doesn’t strike me as something that would have Ranni/Renalla lore, but maybe? Maybe it just hearkens back to the concept of dreams? It’s neither a new nor full moon. The Erdtree being visible so largely in the distance was key to Elden Ring, so I wonder what the moon looking so close might indicate. It also makes me wonder if day/night cycles are going to happen, or if the moon will just sit there in a perpetual night (probably more likely). Heck, if this does involve Ranni lore, maybe it will relate to her ending! Plunging the world into night! Also wonder if the Night’s Cavalry relates to the shadow realm? It’s hard to say whether these are all reaches or if all the night and shadow stuff are summoned to be related

That is likely the Sekiro-attack-power-like mechanic that I briefly mentioned. It came form the Famitsu article, which I could only auto-translate since I don't speak Japanese, so I couldn't speculate too far about how it worked

considering from said ER is the culmination of all their experience…and how the bosses turned out…i don’t expect much of difference from the DLC, which is a shame. i also don’t expect he learned much from making poison swamps…well, maybe he did. but he didn’t learn, apparently, that players don’t like poison swamps…which might be the most important lesson to learn. leading back to the boss discussion…

I really hope they take this opportunity to tie up some of the loose ends the base game left on several of its seemingly major plot points lol. I really like Elden Ring, but I’ve always felt it’s world building leaves much to be desired when compared to Dark Souls

Well, lets assume the game ends with a GOD SLAIN text. This means messmer isnt the final boss, since he is a demigod. Messmer may be a major boss, but also not the final one. Perhaps its after beating messmer where we can fight and slay another outergod.
