Explaining 6L80-90 stator separation

Separating stator support from pump cover. Looking into why dealership techs are telling us that this is strictly forbidden.

Thank you for this video. I took my stator home and put it in the oven at 180 deg F and it went back together beautifully. I need to get an easy bake oven for the shop I guess. Now my 6L80 builds will be that much better.

@155F I was able to reinstall the stator by hand as I suspected. No problem.

Awesome. I have been GM trained on this transmission and I thank you for showing me the things that they aren't willing to tell us. Too often these pumps are thrown in the garage. A good machinist could make them like new again. You rock. Keep up the good work.

I too worked at dealers for many years...they tell you to not do a lot of things that are totally doable with skill and common sense (the two things that are unfortunately not very common anymore)....they brainwash employees with their trouble trees and other diagnostic methods. So glad I left the dealers and actually got to open my eyes and brain.

I'm a retired mechanic and can only agree with what you are saying. Some factory tech bulletins were based on information sent in from techs who were working on the bench using their experience and skill to fix the engineer's screw ups.

Thanks! I just jerked the trans out for the 2nd time on a Tahoe. Slipping going into 5th after rebuild. Stator bolts, 2 were basically hand loose and a piece of the gasket was blown out (on 4-5-6 circuit) causing my issue. I should have swapped the gasket and checked for flat the first time, Oh well. Lesson learned.

Did you have to press it out to get it apart ? And being a interference fit would you use any type of sealant to ensure against any leakage ?

Not really. I just take the bolts out and go around the perimeter with a small dead blow hammer. No, but there is an o-ring and gasket which are included in the overhaul kits....

You really do have to seperate the stator ...the gaskers have a habit of going bad( between stator and support ) and the way we get the pumps machined here in Houston is with a 3 axis cnc machine...

Gm doesn't let use do that because they only pay us 5.8hrs for a complete 6l80 repair on a 4wd truck.

I take mine apart, and inspect, replace gasket and oring. After press it back together carefully. Works great all the time. GM only wants to make money off their customers...
