They all are getting free apartments which are much much much better than present houses. Yet some people have problems with that and try to stop it by approaching courts. I think this is a beautifully planned project in which these people get free houses, government does not have to spend much money and private contractors can also make some money by selling extra apartments . It's win win for all

Now the same people are asking to vote them again to save the nation from anti-nationals. As unemploment at peak now in 4 decade, thinking my enjoyment is the last option, I have got. You may feel bad but I won't trust these guys now.

Exactly, you can't afford to be jobless in Mumbai. If you want to stay jobless, then get out of Mumbai and go to tier 3 city and have reasonable life.

ShivSena has been in Power for nearly 3 decades now & had reasonable leverage on State Govt, yet Kept mill workers waiting. The moment house are made, people will find ways to sell their house & shift somewhere far away from Mumbai. Sena fears their vote bank will go away & hence delaying most redevelopment projects in South Mumbai. Common man can't afford such high standard of living

These will be the same people who gonna bash the government if a building collapse.

People of our country must learn to leave the Free Lunch approach. In every part of our nation such dangerous practice prevails to give services for free, so that the vote bank remains intact, in turn paralyzing the people and economy. 240 rs. rent per year? Free water? That too in a city like Mumbai? I mean, even a beggar in Mumbai can afford costlier deals. Our company SP is developing one of it's packages and we are happy to be a part of such project. These residents are being offered free homes, 10 yeas of free maintenance but there mental poverty doesn't seem to go away soon.

Don't worry, these are just chawls. Main slums are still there and they'll never go away.

Thats the problem with india....no one wants to make a compromise but wants the govt to do everything for free, such people don't even seem to deserve a bit of development and should be left the way they are......we all have made sacrifices, maybe only 3-4% of indians were like rich from the begining, rest of us all made our ways on our own, still some people just want everything granted

They probably need to plan something and have some commerical floor area. Incorporate some sort of revenue source that can fund the maintenance costs (at least in parts). That will probably be beneficial and will also give some employment to the people. It is something that's going to be viable as well.

Ideally they should be leased the house for 30 years and then they should be asked to pay rent. That way their kids will grow and earn more to pay rent or will move out to other places. Then those empty flats can be rented out by the govt. to other immigrants who move into the city. DON'T GIVE THE FLATS FOR FREE!

These "free me chahiye" people are the biggest barriers to our country's development, sick of them honestly...if you point at their mistakes they'll start playing victim.

This is the communication gap that the poor are not been told about from the government. No poor people are told that you cannot remain in the same place with the same rate for years, everything increases when the economy of the country grows. You have to give up your house or land cause you cannot afford it. Thus the middle class keeps moving far from the major cities to the outskirts. The government should educate the poor who live in such places 10 years before evacuation.

Mumbai has high living standard. Paying ₹2000 is not much. Congress has habituated people of free welfare schemes. Nehrus socialism has kept this country backward. To lead in the world we need a fantastic infrastructure. Good modernized schools and hospitals in Mumbai. Kejriwal is also giving free but his govt is in huge profit. Plus in Delhi he there is a new policy in which they are going to replace all slums with houses in next 5 years. Yogi is also giving free welfare schemes but his government is in profit. Uttar Pradesh budget has doubled in 5 years. Unemployment rate is 2.5 % according to CMIE data. When yogi came in power it was 13%. Maharashtra needs either BJP or AAP. Shivesena, ncp and inc they simply don't do anything. Marathi people need to be over from shivesena sentiments.

The difficulty in redeveloping Dharavi comes more from its far higher cost and the issue of who owns the land. For the BDD chawls, the project was comparatively easier as the land and buildings were already govt owned. In contrast, the land is only partly owned by the government. This land itself is hard to redevelop because half of it is technically rail land, and thus is owned by the central govt, which for political reasons, will not allow its usage by any party apart from theirs. The other half of the land, not owned by the govt, is owned by many individual slum residents, who attained the right to their land through earlier schemes in the district. I'm not justifying the current government, as they themselves have never found an adequate solution, but then no government in the city has. In my mind, what Dharavi needs is a far more heavy handed approach. The central and state governments should stop quarrelling and should put the people first and give all the land to the city. The state government should then annex all private land in the district and initiate a large scale redevelopment of it, keeping in account the community oriented, almost village style urbanism which is one of the few positives, at least according to its residents, of Dharavi. Otherwise, they should just fully give up and give all the land of Dharavi to its residents while placing joint decisions into the Dharavi trust so that they may vote on the development plans themselves. This could also work and would be impressively democratic, possibly even allowing the districts residents to have true negotiating power with private players to allow for them to attain greater concessions from them through the redevelopment. On the other hand, it could also possibly slow the progress of redevelopment to a complete halt. Both methods in my mind have merit, but the govt should choose one of them, for doing nothing does not help anyone.

It is highly unlikely that these people can not afford Rs. 2000 towards maintenance of their uplifted living standards they are getting as a favor out of all taxpayers people from their government. They live in cramped spaces because cost of built up space per square feet in Mumbai is beyond their reach because of a set of reasons like price of land in Mumbai with limited scope of horizontal spread and rules and regulations constricting scope of vertical growth. But they by no means are impoverished people living below poverty level, going by their yearly household income and their consumption pattern. It is just that they know the real estate worth of land encroached upon by them as well as prospects of beautification, sanitation and urbanization required for greater good of larger people including prospects of commercial investment into the city being held hostage to their decision as to whether to agree with government conditions or to indulge in anarchic violence with such an opportunity presenting itself to them for them to extract more concessions and favors that they are not entitled to as encroaching lower middle class, from the government under pretense of poverty so that they do not have to pay anything from their pocket for living a better life.

Mumbai has rent control law due to which rents have been fixed for decades and have not increased.

We spend our whole lifetimes struggling to pay heavy rents and mortgages. These people are getting everything for free and still grumbling. They will pay any amount for cable tv. No matter how much you give, they will still bargain for more. The line must be drawn somewhere. You can't be a global leading nation with slums and chawls at every other street .
