EXPLAINED: Mass Protests in Kenya

Ойын-сауық

Zambian Economist Grieve Chelwa joins Bad Faith to explain how mass protests in Kenya defeated IMF-backed austerity policies, and how the IMF and World Bank use debt as a mechanism of control. Dr. Chelwa charts how the BRICS bank & dedollarization may provide a way out for countries struggling under western debt-control, and the crucial role global solidarity must play. This is one of those big picture episodes you wont want to miss.

I once read a long time ago, I think in a book by economist Jeffrey Sachs, that the IMF and/or the World Bank would loan money to non-Western countries without taking into consideration the way that the cultures of those countries dealt with money or the idea of loans, imposing a Western valuation on the process and encountering problems because of it, but instead of examining why, in terms of, again, the potential cultural issues, they would just blame the country for being bad with money or something. Very imperialist view. Thank you, again, Briahna, for a wonderful, educational interview and exchange of ideas. I always learn something new!

It's July 4, Independence Day for the USA, when American colonists fought to free themselves from Austerity programs imposed by Britain to service Britain's debt. And here I am today, listening to Africans talk about freeing themselves from taxation without representation, and Austerity Programs imposed by the British Empire (because that's what the Western global hegemony really is: the continuation of the British Empire and British system under different names...A colonial power that uses debt instruments to control peoples.) Probably the most patriotic and truly American thing you can do right now is to stand in solidarity with African peoples struggling against colonial control via debt instruments. This is EXACTLY what we were fighting for over two hundred years ago. We as Americans have forgotten this, due to the perversion of our system by neo-colonialist financialists.

@@fundidoarrojo269 The "British Empire" today is a Stateless entity...Not a nation or a culture...Just as the Roman Empire fell officially in 476 AD, it diffused itself and lived on in the form of the Vatican, Holy Roman Empire, and the Venetian banking system...Became a spiritual and ideological institution taken up and enforced by others. Same thing with the British Empire: it lives on but in another form, and that form is those multinational corporations, banking structures, think tanks, and intelligence agencies all around the world in what is called "The Five Eyes." The US was chosen to be the bulldog, the enforcer, of this system because of its continental largesse and military might. The true head of the British Empire, though, is those scientific institutions that set the tone and narrative that those corporations, banking structures, and intelligence arms enforce. Such as: The Royal institutes of science which create the computer models that are designed to scare people into accepting population reduction and austerity measures. The way to control population is to limit energy and put a ration or limit on how much energy each country is allowed to access. Food and economy are downstream from energy because it takes energy to grow food. When a country disobeys this limit, austerity measures and restrictions are tightened using the World Bank, IMF, Bank of International Settlements, and so on. And if a leader defies this further, then the US intelligence arms and military force is called in to do regime change. This rogue leader is then vilified in the press, to justify to the people of America and the British Commonwealth nations why this leader needs to be deposed. Finally, a coup is instituted, usually by the CIA, MI5, or a combination of both.

I'm an RPVC that worked in Madagascar where the French installed dams in my village back in the 60s with the idea of changing from coffee beans (an indigenous high value crop) to rice, a water and labor intensive non native crop). Although the country gained "independence" back in the early 60s, the French control the finances to this day and the Malagasy remain in deep poverty and food insecurity where there is no end in sight. It's a human and biodiversity tragedy on a massive scale. Thank you for bringing this to your channel.

As a Kenyan I think the one thing everyone outside Kenya is missing is that we aren't necessarily opposed to paying higher taxes if it was actually going to improve the nation. It's that the high taxes we are already paying are being blatantly misused and squandered corruptly whether it is needless expensive renovations to government buildings and "furniture acquisitions " running into the high millions of dollars. to creation of unconstitutional positions leading to additional needless bureaucracy that not only adds to the already bloated government wages but also allows extra avenues for corruption. To the ridiculous high numbers of trips abroad taken by the government officials (led by our tourist of a president) accompanied by massive entourages of joy riders. Or the vanity "infrastructure programs that NOBODY ASKED FOR! All this paid for by taxpayers. Meanwhile the government doesn't have money to pay Teachers, doctors, nurses, or providing medical services. However the political class somehow has massive wealth to flex with riding around in impressive convoys and giving millions to "church fundraising". Against this backdrop, they want to increase MORE taxes on us...my blood is boiling as I type this

Most Africans know all this. I'm a Malawian and most Malawians when we're together we discuss this we want change but like the professor says how do we go about. Unless we get military help from Countries that understand ower plight we will never come out of the problem.

Great guest. Good info and someone a lot of us wouldn't see in other indepedant media at least in the US.Many others try but maybe don't have the contacts or are just too obsessed with domestic stuff.

Prof. you forgot to mention that the debt is odious. An audit has not been done, and none can account for how the borrowed money was used.

There are usually stipulations imposed by the how the money us used, how to participate in the export markets, social spending, etc. Borrower has to meet conditions in order to get future loans. So it's not like the Borrower has autonomy with the borrowed funds.

Amazing interview! I so wish all these young people who believe in Trump would listen to something like this and be open to understanding it. They’re in for a rude awakening. And I wish all the xenophobes would begin to understand that the “west” or “Minority world” is constantly creating reasons for people from the “Majority world” to want to or have to migrate. Bri, you’re always fantastic and this was an incredible guest!

I'm Kenyan and I think the prof is wrong on Kenyan issue. The protest was not about why the gov't is not taxing "the elite" or the haves. Everyone was out including the elite, protesting against bad governance. Nothing to do with class or social statuses AT ALL!!! 😏
