I would like to know whether they shot JSOW or JAASM missiles from the B-1B, or if they got in closer to use JDAM and/or CBUs. I suspect the latter. If they were going to use missiles, they could have had the Navy use Tomahawks and not risked aircraft issues. I think they might have had covert assets on the ground marking targets. I'll bet it was quite the fireworks show!

General Philip Mark Breedlove seems to be the type of soldier who never met a war he didn't like. This situation needs measured restraint in terms of the response, unless of course he wants more dignified returns of soldiers. You don't want a localized war to turn into a regional war with potential for a global one.

I disagree that the response was delayed too long. We have the capability to get timely targeting intelligence right up to the moment of strikes in most cases. Striking within a day or two is no more effective than striking on the fifth day. In fact waiting may have led to more effective strikes.

Lancer B1B Specs: Block E upgraded the avionics computers and incorporated the Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser (WCMD), the AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) and the AGM-158 JASSM (Joint Air to Surface Standoff Munition), substantially improving the bomber's capability. Upgrades were completed in September 2006 Block F was the Defensive Systems Upgrade Program (DSUP) to improve the aircraft's electronic countermeasures and jamming capabilities, but it was canceled in December 2002 due to cost overruns and delays. In 2007, the Sniper XR targeting pod was integrated on the B-1 fleet. The pod is mounted on an external hardpoint at the aircraft's chin near the forward bomb bay. Following accelerated testing, the Sniper pod was fielded in summer 2008. n August 2019, the Air Force unveiled a modification to the B-1B to allow it to carry more weapons internally and externally. Using the moveable forward bulkhead, space in the intermediate bay was increased from 180 to 269 in (457 to 683 cm). Expanding the internal bay to make use of the Common Strategic Rotary Launcher (CSRL), as well as utilizing six of the eight external hardpoints that had been previously out of use to keep in line with the New START Treaty, would increase the B-1B's weapon load from 24 to 40. The configuration also enables it to carry heavier weapons in the 5,000 lb (2,300 kg) range, such as hypersonic missiles; the AGM-183 ARRW is planned for integration onto the bomber. Future precision munitions include the Small Diameter Bomb.

Just as a review Iran and Israel have been at war, in Syria and Lebanon for the whole 45 years now. A cold war chapter that remains existential to both. We hope to see fewer battles rather than more as force is applied in a proportional response per doctrine and assets on hand. The B 1 Bombers have a 7500 mile range and re fuel with Area Denial platforms and staff surged. 85 targets is a large number at once, even with hundreds of jets .

Major Lyons is overlooking the fact that this is a strategic response involving B1 bombers. Targets must be identified, plans drawn up, munitions specified, coordination with forces in the region including that strike force in the Mediterranean (possily also involved) and even attaining information from Israel's intelligence force etc. must first be done. At best that would take a few days. Then those planes need a day to fly to their targets. As for the delay benefitting the enemy: another military commentator noted that US (and possibly Israeli) surveillance is now focused on the mission, so it will be looking to spot any movement as the enemy seeks to take shelter. They will be transporting weapons and materiel to warehouses, underground facilities etc. This informs the targeting as well as what types of munitions to employ (i.e., bunker buster bombs for underground). These discussions like in this video are 5% factual information and 95% waffling to fill time. I've watched a report from this same channel were the reporter was given a few minutes to say what could have been said in two sentences: "They're hitting 85 targets with a variety of munitions delivered by B1 bombers that have flown over from the USA. Other than that we don't know and will need to wait until further information is provided to us."

Do you remember the satellite footage from the first Gulf war in about 91, military was all over itself with joy when it got to show us that. It's now 2024, and the military has made an ass load of top secret launches since 1991. We see everything that moves over there. Oh, and we also have a space-based missile launch detection system called SBIRS that covers the entire world.

I'm not an expert at all, but it appears that a single B1-B can now carry 36 JDAMs or other precision-guided weapons. Given modern satellite and communications technology, it would seem to me that they can float ONE B1B in the air and shortly deploy 36 munitions in a single pass. 85 is not so hard with a few B1-B's. BTW a B2 is reportedly able to launch over 80 JDAMs in a single pass. Besides getting the B1 in theater, the most time would seem to be identifying and vetting the targets. They've had weeks to work on that.

i agree but if it is an enemy we have to kill, we have to be able to defeat them in different ways, from 12.7mm/50bmg DARPA Exacto Bullets to M712 Copperheads (both underrated btw), and bigger bombs. My point is that the tier list based on lethality is designed for specified threat levels accommodated from battle logistics. Last but not least, we have to train our new soldiers simultaneously and perfectly with much more basic training methods (from fitness to fine-tuning of guns and even history) but this is not only possible but also important.

If Iran calls America's bluff and fully prepares for war they know the US can't put an army large enough on the ground to defeat Iran, particularly if other Iranian allies get involved such as India, China or both. This entire situation can easily spiral into WW3 and the US will get it's butt kicked on the ground in this region...!!!

But are you really qualified, and is there enough information available, to determine whether this action is “the same” as previous actions? I think the reporter was trying to explore this very point in her questioning of the 2 military types. It appears that it is a more strategic action than those taken previously, given the platforms used, the targeting, and the volume of ordnance delivered. The quibbling about the 5 day lag is the typical useless huff and puff. Undoubtedly intelligence gathering went into overdrive during that period, and they were wise to take that time to get it.

I wish more people understood that military missions like this involve many human lives. Many of my fellow airmen are engaged in this massive attack on the enemy. Every one of them is a potential casualty, or POW. All of them courageously do their duty; but it is essential the people of US understand how dangerous this is for our servicemen and women. Surely, US leaders understand this, as do those carrying out the mission. This attack would not go forward if the US military and government did not see this retaliation as essential and necessary in order to prevent a larger conflict later. I am speaking as one who was a part of a very similar situation many years ago. This military response is not only because of the injured and killed US servicemen and women, but to prevent more attacks and loss of life in the future.

Is Iran relentlessly dropping 2,000 lb bombs on crowded refugee centers? Is Iran cutting off food, water, medical care, electricity, fuel, sanitary care, communications etc from 2.3 million people trapped in a small area that has had most of its shelter obliterated? Has Iran stolen land from millions of people and then kept them in British-style concentration camps for the last 75 years? Is Iran an apartheid state that separates half the population with high walls, barbed wire, oppressive totalitarian checkpoints and 24/7 surveillance of all communication? No. Iran has not committed any of these atrocities and crimes against humanity. But, for sure, the Jewish state of Israel has. See, for example, the recent ICJ ruling which stated: "It is plausible that Israel's conduct amounts to genocide..." Whatever Iran's flaws may be, no one is accusing it of genocide. Whereas most of the world believes that Israel is guilty of genocide in Palestine and the US, Germany, UK, Italy, France, and Holland in particular are complicit in that genocide because of their support for Tel Aviv.

The same can be said of Christianity and Judaism. The three branches of a very bloody tree. In all of them you have good, decent, peaceful people who attribute their good nature to their interpretation of their "holy book" and also evil people who (with equal justification) source their evil ideas to the same books. Never forget the Christian roots of Nazism and the KKK. The Jews have been less trouble because they have so rarely had any power, but now we see what they do when they get some.

This is what it looks like when you have qualified, serious, and intelligent leaders. Get used to and get on board with it because we have 4+ years more coming! 🎉🎉

Most do and the Vietnamese are falling all over themselves as we speak, to fill the hole as we withdraw from China. Encouraging us to work with them as much as possible. I think care in targeting, for impact and limiting civilian losses, is prudent. Long term, both Ukraine and Israel will more readily prosper, if they can come to terms with their neighbors. Relax, they know what they're doing. 5 days is actually fast enough, that it's pretty surely only Phase One of the response. There is no game clock counting down like in football. Think of what we've seen as being the bottom of the first inning of a baseball game. Early in the baseball season. Sometimes an opponent scores the first run, it doesn't mean you need to stress out if you don't retake the lead by the next inning. We have the better pitching, we have the better hitting. Time is on our side militarily. No hurry.

How about we not have our American troops spread throughout the Middle East and unfriendly territory to prevent them from being in harms way to begin with? None of these militia groups have capabilities nor desires to attack the US itself. They have regional goals. Let’s take ourselves out of the equation and let Israel deal with themselves if they want to not listen to us.

@@larod92 The US was not the center of the world prior to WWII and would have been entirely incapable to “police the world”. Not to mention, what we do is not prevent World War. What we do is use international law against our enemies fairly or unfairly and ignore it with our allies (Saudi’s Arabia, Israel etc) to further American interests, not the world or the regions interests.
