I tried foam , but it turned to dust after about two lawn cuts , so I filled the tires with sand . Now I got flat free tires and wieght enough to push snow in the winter . Doesn't seem to hurt the lawns at all ( two acres of grass )

It really does not matter what others have to say here, you have just as much right to do what you want to with your stuff and share it with anyone who will listen. Me personally, I just busted down my tire (on the mower) and inserted a $6.00 inner tube, but whatever works for you is your business.

Alex, thanks for posting this. While all of the crabby people in the comments just say "use tire slime" I say, "Try something different". Do you know how many things are invented by people goofing around? A LOT! We actually fill a lot of hollow plastic parts here at work with foam to make them a lot more stable and rigid. Way to try something different. Ignore the haters. They are all probably unhappy with their lives anyways. (PS, I made a couple different bottle rocket launchers with my brother when I was 13 and he was 10. I'm an engineer now. :) )

I thought of that, but I'm too cheap to spend the money on the foam... or tire slime 1 cup wood ash, 1 cup rolled oats (crushed/ground finer if possible), 2 cups antifreeze (if you're in a cold climate).. break bead and pour it in... Exactly the same tire as in the video, had badly cracked sidewalls... 8 months later it's still full... When you have over 150 tires to take care of, cheap and functional is all you need sometimes

Yeah, you don;t really need to take the wheel off to get the tire out, just need set of pry bars, and a cinder block to take the tire off.Seems like the foam would just crush once it gets hard, then your back where you started with a tire full of large holes, and broken up foam bits.

At 62 I have used expanding foam since it was invented....I have never found a can that required water to activate the expanding...what were you using? Also a little hint....drill 2 holes in the face of the tire opposite of each other...the hole you are going to insert the straw in should be one drill bit size smaller than the straw to create a tight seal when inserted...the foam will push ALL air out the other hole and the tire is full about 5 seconds after the foam starts coming out of the other hole....

When you do this how can you regulate the “pressure “ on the tires? For instance if it should be 40psi on the tires and you put that much in each you know the pressure is the same and the mower is leveled so then the deck can be leveled for a nice uniformed cut on the yard. But if you put foam in the tires you can’t get a uniform pressure and a leveled mower and deck which would cause uneven cuts and tall/ missed spots on the yard. It would drive me crazy looking at an uneven cut and dips where the mower turns. I keep mine leveled w proper air pressure etc to get a nice cut. It looks nice and neat like a golf coarse almost. Not that short of course just neat, like carpet almost. Anyway just curious

I still have 4 tires I need to do this to once I get the mowers running.. ONE BIG CAN would be overkill.. if say 5 days apart and 10 re treats do not work, take the machine to the tire shop, they have ways of dong this.. but its costly..

never heard of foam you have to set up with water. i think the reason it didnt set up is because it couldnt breathe. should have put a hole in the top of the tire and started filling from the top. as soon as the foam on the side wall dried it sealed the inside of the tire and kept the foam from getting air, you transferred it from on container to another. not sure what the origional issue was but you have access to youtube, check out how to fix a tire. FYI, to all who watch this. if you choose to use foam in this manner, do yourself a favor first, waste a can first by spraying some on a board and wait a day then step on it. it works by the foam capturing butt loads of tiny air bubbles (because its meant to be insulation) and as soon as you put pressure on it, the foam crumbles. he ruined the tire, worse it probably ruined the rim (may never seal again) and the absolute worst, he could have taken it to someone and had it fixed for less than what he has in it now. they do make a product to do this with but its not this.

I agree, I always try to weigh how long it will take me to do something and what it will cost in materials, vs how long a professional can do it and what that will cost. Like changing brake pads and rotors on my car can cost $600 and take a few hours. I can do it myself in half an hour for around $100 so I do it myself. I can take an hour changing my oil then, have to drop it off for recycling and spend like $30 or take my car to someone for $40 and they can have it done in about 45 minutes. so I take my car to a shop for oil changes. It may be easy to do myself but when for just a few bucks more I don't need to worry about disposal or getting dirty.

Where I used to work they always had a tire shop fill the fork lift tires with some type of foam. It was pretty expensive, but saved a lot of equipment down time. On my almost 40 year old Yard Man I bought a heavy duty 14/15" (universal size?) inner tube $20 and solved my problem. Learned my lesson of adding water for ballast to tubeless tires. It will make a mess of steel rims after many years. Probably okay to use water if it goes in a inner tube. Would just buy new tires, but for a garden tractor tire replacement every seller wants outrageous prices for these 15" turf saver styles.

Very interesting idea. The only issue I see with it is as you continue to use the tire, the rigid foam inside is going to continue to crack and it's structure is going to eventually fail little by little. That being said.. I do like the idea.. When this tire fails, you might try your experiment again. This time with using a flexible foam silicone. I think it would hold up much longer, probably for the life of the tire.

Did this with a wheel barrow tire. After trimming the overflow, it worked great! Then one of the handles broke...I don't think expanding foam is going to work on that. And don't worry about drilling holes. Just squirt in around the rim and take out the valve core and fill through the valve stem. You won't need the core anyway. And just use the type that is self activating.

Face Palm... That foam breaks down with pressure so it wont last... air the tire up, lift the mower, run soapy water over the tread to find the leak, mark it and repair with a patch (or plug if you cant get it off the rim)... 5-6 cans of this stuff is probably the same or more than a new tire would cost...

Cool Video, I have a question. Who told you to put water in first? It helps with curing? Im about to repair my lawn mower tire and just doing my research before I act.

I would not have thought of that. It can't hurt to put some water in there before I foam the tire. Thanks.

Pantharen That's overly complicated and time consuming. Use "SLIME tire sealant" instead. No need to drill any holes in the tire and it only takes 10 minutes to fix your flat.

Just take it apart, clean the old tire and repaint the rim then put a tire tube inside it. Tubes last forever and they seldom need air. Or buy new tubeless tire and put on.

If you do use foam inside your tire, use tire slime. Although if you ever remove the old tire. It’s a mess to clean off inside of rim.

the green slime sold at most auto parts stores works really well for slow leaks .. just be sure that the tire is spun after you add the quart to the big tire.. I aired tires up to suggested 18 lbs right afterward.. then drove it 1/4 mile... I have done 4 riders with this stuff and it worked each time.. NOW big holes...NO NO NO.. just the nicks etc.. even had some sidewalls this stuff fixed..

Tires are much cheaper these days than can foam! I just bought two John Deer Tires for my 32" mower for $17.00. How much is a can of foam these days? $5 bucks? Cheaper or rigged is not always the best way seeing how we are wanting longevity! "Great" watching "Stuff" here online via KZread.

If you don't know, try it. I love great stuff foam. I have even filled tires with it. It does need moisture to set it off, usually humidity is enough. My tires had plenty of moisture from all the fix-flat that didn't fix it. Great stuff works.

  • @kperellie

If you ever do this again, try this first. Drill one hole through the tread opposite the air valve. Remove the needle valve and insert the straw either in the drilled hole or the air valve if it will fit, force some water into the tire then fill until you see the foam coming out of the opposite hole. One other thing you should find out is if the foamed tire has the same diameter or circumference when someone is sitting on the mower as the air filled one because if not, the mower will not cut evenly and you may have to adjust the side to side cutting adjustment on the deck. Just be sure you don't over air fill the other tire.

I could be wrong. If you put two holes in the tire the foam could draft from the second hole thereby allowing expansion. Pancake batter will not compress and is thick enough not to leak out. Good luck.
