    For those interested: this thin plastic layer is protecting the can from being corroded by coke. It also protects from leaching metals out of the can apparently.

    How to do it? Maybe. It's pretty common knowledge for anyone interested to find out that soda companies line the aluminum can inside with a thin layer of plastic so the aluminum can't react with the acid in the soda.

    Like what was said before. Aluminum cans have a thin plastic lining on the inside. It’s something already well known, but this also shows how powerful and dangerous drain cleaner really is. It can dissolve aluminum so imagine what it can do to your body.

    Basically the drain cleaner ate away at the aluminum. Before manufacturers put the drink in, they spray the van with a special coating, so the drink doesn’t taste like aluminum and so the drink doesn’t eat at the can. That was just the solid spray I think. But I don’t think the spray gives off bpa. That’s just the plastics in cheap water bottles.

    Also, just a small note. The amount of time spent to dissolve the thinner layer of metal is not enough to dissolve the thicker base part. If left to a longer time (without saturating the lye solution of course, which I doubt it will), it will dissolve the bottom part, too!

    This is a coating they spray on the inside to keep the soft drink away from the aluminum. If they did not, the cola would eat through the can very quickly.

    I think aluminium is having a reaction with the sodium hydroxide contained in the drain cleaner to form aluminium hydroxide, this is why aluminium gets in the solution I suppose... cool! Didn't know cans had a protective plastic layer

    Tried this, there was nothing left over.. So if there is a protective layer then it gets dissolved in the acid.. also it releases a shit ton of gas so if you try this you need to try it outside.. i think this video is bullshit. Also i didnt need to sand away the outside.

    This is extremely easy to replicate in your own home with materials that can be purchased in any major supermarket. Needless to say you may want to use goggles and gloves and perform the experiment in a well ventilated area free of clutter.

    The plastic is called kegliner, it’s been used since metal drink cans came into use in the 1930s, if you ever find an old can from the 1960s a lot of the steel will be rusted away with the keglining still intact

    My question is why didn't the bottom, that is the same aluminum dissolve? Pop cans are extruded aluminum that means the bottom is the same as the sides. In the bottom was also in the solvent but somehow did not dissolve like the rest of it did.

    It's thicker. The can was left in just long enough for the sides to dissolve but not long enough for the bottom to completely dissolve.

    So I measured the thickness of the can, side and bottom with a micrometer and they are exactly the same, if anything the walls are thicker.

    He didn't remove the protective layer from the top and bottom layers. Only the red coated areas.

    @@xhawkenx633 I cant speak about where you're from but in our little spot in the world glass, can, and paper go in separate bins. And even further where I work metals are separated from aluminium, stainless, and carbon steel.

    @@nahmean7045 I guess it depends on the waste management company in your area. As for the metal is a weld fabrication shop so the less the metal is mixed we actually get a better return on unmixed metal scrap.

    They didn't sand that part with the sandpaper, so the acid from the drain cleaner didn't react with the aluminum cos it has a protective coating on it.
