My guess is the Forester saw something in the top to indicate rot going down. Good call on his part. Great video.

My guess is he probably saw it had a squirrel hole or some damage where water could get in in the crotch way up. That usually trashes the tree if it been that way for a while.

Dang must be one that’s been in the forest for a long time. Or they got burned a few times and learned what to look for.

Most foresters in my area would mark every tree for veneer. They get paid percentage of sale and would try to make the bid look as great as possible incase someone just bids it off the sheet.

Ones in my area don't mark anything as veneer. They may make notes of certain walnut that are good quality (all walnut gets numbered and anything else gets a band) and make notes about quality of the hardwood but most of them exaggerate a lot. But they make sure to also note that "buyer must examine themselves of quality and quantity of timber for sale" to save their ass

Loving ur channel bud. I like ur planting video. I own 100 acres in western NC. Im trying find a company that will sell me sapplings to set out like u did. I talked to my forest service people bc they said they'd help.me set out trees after I had some cut. Well they aint. They said it was gonna be like 1500 a acre just for set pines. Im like no way hell what I cut won't dam pay for that. 15k per 10 acres

I live in Indiana and we have a tree nursery here in my state. Not sure if each state has a nursery or not but your state forest office should be able to tell you that info. Next thing you will need to do is have a idea what your wanting to accomplish by setting trees. My goal was to make a buffer along my property "close to the house" so I didnt have to see any neighbors. I spaced mine out 4 foot from tree to tree and 3 foot row space. If your wanting to reforest acreage your gonna want a min of 700 trees on a acre also depending on your soil type. I see your in NC that's alot of deep clay there, you might be stuck with alot of pine I'm not sure as to what is around you.
