11. SOUNDBITE: (English): Alexis de Tiesenhausen, Head of the Russian Department, Christie's:
"The design for this was far more elaborate, or far more complex, or the idea it's more, how can I put it - exciting. Because, you have to keep in mind, in 1913 it was a tricentenary of the Romanov dynasty, and everybody who was involved in producing gifts for the imperial family tried to do his best."

STORYLINE:
The Winter Egg, a Russian Imperial Easter egg produced by the jeweler Carl Faberge, sold for nearly 9.6 (m) million U.S. dollars on Friday.
The egg was acquired by an anonymous telephone bidder against fierce competition.
A Christie's spokesperson said the final price for The Winter Egg exceeded even their highest expectations.
The same egg last sold for 5.6 (m) million U-S dollars at Christie's Geneva in 1994.
Embellished with more than three thousand diamonds, the egg was given by Czar
Nicholas II to his mother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, on Easter 1913.
It contains a basket of delicate spring flowers symbolizing the rebirth and seasonal change associated with Easter.
Faberge created a total of 50 eggs for the Russian royal family between 1885 and 1916. The whereabouts of only 44 of the Imperial eggs is known.

There’s literally forty other eggs and they’re in museums that should be enough, what difference does it make that a handful are in private collections. It’s not like you or the average museum goer can even tell the difference.
