‘Expedition Unknown’ host passed on Titan sub trip over safety concerns | CUOMO

Josh Gates, host of the Discovery show "Expedition Unknown,” was planning to take a trip on OceanGate’s Titan submersible and film an episode, but ultimately decided against it. He joins “CUOMO” to explain why.

Josh made a simple, but insightful, risk calculation: that the risk _was incalculable_ . Although he didn't say it explicitly, one can imply that Josh figured that the risk _could_ be too great. Good call.

Exactly! Calling the passengers “mission specialists”, doesn’t make them experts. Oceangate can call them that, making them seem important, if they want. Truly they were just tourists, with the exception of Nargolet.

Like he said, it could be pressure cycle fatigue. The comet airliner in the 1950s broke up in the sky. 7 broke up and they finally did cycle pressure tests and determined they all broke up from metal fatigue from the pressure cycles. All these submarines should be tested in the same way.

There is nothing to investigate - that sub was never certified for life safety for 4000 meters depth at 6000PSI water pressure!!! For life safety, the entire sub should have been tested to 3X or 5X of maximum pressure so that means certifying at 18,000PSI minimum!!! It wasn't! It wasn't even tested at 6000PSI pressure!!!!

There are risks in everything, but when you sign on to do an excursion with a company you expect that that company has done everything they can to ensure passenger safety. You expect the company to get outside inspections, you expect them to get all the certifications and classifications they need, and to run numerous tests. You expect a company to be completely transparent about those tests and inspections. It doesn't sound like Oceangate did any of this. It was never registered as a commercial submersible which prevented it from having to meet certain regulations. Risk? Yes, but this goes beyond normal risk.

I’m glad Josh Gates recognize how risky it would have been to be on board the ill fated Titan submersible in any extreme deep sea dive due to its likely and apparent inability to hold up against the extreme pressure of the deep sea. I like Josh Gates shows Expedition Unknown and Expedition X. Josh Gates might be seen as an extremist or risk taker but he always seems to acknowledge and appreciate the risks and dangers of any expedition he takes to dangerous environments he visits. He is right in saying exploration will go on and the Titanic will continue to fascinate people. He is right in saying that the lesson and mistakes of the Titan submersible tragedy must be learned from and the safety of human life must be the most important thing despite any and all risks that come with exploring dangerous and or hostile environments.

A shocking deal of foolishness seems to have been involved. Grief over the deceased should not stop us from pointing to the numerous ways in which safety was disregarded. The only person where one can try to find some degree of rationality, for him to risk his life so unreasonably, is the French guide. He was a retired submariner, an old man with a fixation over Titanic who happened to be very well paid to dive. So well paid, I guess, he was thinking about his children and grandchildren at least as much as about Titanic. He lost his life as a richer old man than many other French navy officers, probably (though others aren't bad either, at finding extra revenue sources).

He didn’t deliberately murder anyone. He wouldn’t have been in the sub himself if he thought they wouldn’t make it back alive.

@@conradsieber7883 Who says he was a malignant narcissist? As a mental health professional, I certainly would not diagnose someone that I have not done an assessment on personally, nor do I know any other professional who would. Also, I would say in my opinion he may have had some narcissistic traits, but I doubt he was a true narcissist.

I don’t care what anyone says, this dude was a Ponzi scheme on steroids, he made all the passengers feel safe and honestly sent them to there grave with no concern other than them signing a waiver I’m sure that will make him unaccountable in any court. This is sad and they had confidence in this guy and he took advantage of them.

This submersible seems to be the ultimate design that will deny the carbon fibre body to be put in its position of ultimate strength.. tension. And at the same time to exploit its ultimate weakness.. compression, of which it has little strength. Likely shattered
