    Hi, nice review. I also own both an Exped pad and the S2S pad you also show in the video. Agreed, the Exped pump sack can easily get tangled but when you first get it untangled, I think it works quite well, but it does require a bit of practice... I also use the pump sack as a dry bag in my backpack. I can fit my sleeping bag, pillow, sleeping pad and spare clothes inside the pump sack, so I actually bring the Exped pump sack also for use with my S2S pad, due to dual usage and then leave the S2S pump sack/carry pack at home.

    I have the Synmat HL LW. Great pad overall. It can make a lot of noise, but that depends on the surface below it. In one tent is makes hardly any noise, while in another tent it is horrendous. The vertical air chamners are ok, but I prefer the horizontal chambers such as the ones on the Neoair. I have no issues with the snozzle bag. It works better than the one from Therm-a-rest and it is much quicker than the old handpump of exped (I have not used the S2S pump sack so I cannot comment on that). And yes, it can be a struggle to inflate your mat inside a small tent in the rain....

    I have an Exped megamat lite 12. It is by far the most comfortable sleeping pad on which I have slept. It has a 5.3 r-value, which is enough to get you through all but the most Arctic weather. I live in the Rocky mountains where the temperature can drop precipitously and I would buy that pad again in a minute. As I have gotten older, I have found that sleeping on the ground or a thin foam mat is too uncomfortable. My back and hips would kill me in the morning, if I got any sleep. My exped mat, however, is as comfortable as my bed at home. My only complaint is the warranty, I think exped should follow in thermarest's and Nemo's footsteps and offer a lifetime warranty, especially for the price.

    Hmmm.... I must say, I really DO very much like everything EXPED do!! And I actually really LIKE the schnozel bag!! It makes actually a lot of sense to me in it's design and to me, it is the absolute best one in the market!! In fact I really do hate the s2s inflating bag!! That's kind of a terrible design in my ways! The only valid point you did bring about it, is that it might be a bit big and cumbersome inside of a tent to deal with it, but honestly I really do love the whole design and ease of it!! It even has a foot loop at the bottom to hold in place!! I love it!! You got to admit it's a rather ingenious and thoughtful design!! 😍😍 Thank you for also using the schnozel bag properly! As many don't seem to get it and just start rolling the entire thing down! I think EXPED make some amazing pads and I really want to get the synmat duo!! That would be perfect to go in the back country with a partner!

    Hi Rob, Fantastic timing with another great review. I have been looking at Exped mats and e-mailed them about where their products are manufactured. The response was Vietnam, so for me this is a winner, as I personally try to avoid products from Vietnam's bigger, menacing neighbour. Would you recommend this a sleeping mat for all seasons? I am new to camping and do not want to spend too much on equipment, so am looking for soemthing that can be used in warmer temperatures too. Is this feasible or is a lower R value the way to go for summer? I am definitly looking for something this thick though, as I weigh 110kg. As a side note: Exped sleeping bags are manufactured in the PRC, for people who are bothered about that kind of thing.

  • @OutdoorPrep

    @OutdoorPrep

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great questions Felix. So R value is insulation. You can never have too much. Lower R value will generally mean lighter weight, so people try to go as low as they can get away with to lighten their pack. This is definitely great for most temperatures, unless the summer is extremely hot and you wish you were on cold ground just to cool off. But keep in mind that at night things generally cool off. So in short: if you don't mind the weight and want just one pad - I would go with this one. I'm 100kg+ as well - pad seems stable.

    An alternative to the rectangular pad is the wide (MW) mummy. For the Ultra R5: M mummy: 445 g (15.7 oz). MW mummy: 535 g (18.9 oz), 90 g (3.2 oz) more. M rectangular: 585 g (20.6 oz), 140 g (4.9 oz) more. MW rectangular: 655 g (23.1 oz), 210 g (7.4 oz) more. Both shapes of "M" are 52 cm (20.5") at the widest. Both shapes of "MW" are 65 cm (25.6") at the widest (13 cm / 5.1" more). If you can handle the narrow foot (42 cm / 16.5"), you get more shoulder width for less weight with the MW mummy vs. the M rectangular. For comparison, the M mummy foot width is 35 cm (13.8"). Halfway between the shoulder and foot area (estimated by averaging the two measurements, which should be a reasonable approximation): M mummy: 43.5 cm (17.1") MW mummy: 53.5 cm (21.1"), 10 cm (3.9") more. I haven't tried any Exped pads myself (yet), but I know what you mean, a standard width (51 cm, 20") NeoAir Xlite is a bit of a pain (for me) to stay centered on when turning over. And by centered, I mean centred.

    You shouldn't blow your breath into the pump sack. The idea of a pump sack is to bring less moister into the mat to reduce mould and heat loss. And it's a lot easier to catch air with the pump sack of Exped compared to the ones of Sea to Summit and Thermarest.

  • @OutdoorPrep

    @OutdoorPrep

    2 жыл бұрын

    The idea is not to blow directly into it but from a distance, you’ll move more air molecules that way. Also you do it with “closed” lips so you don’t heat the air up too much 🤓 I’m looking at it from the perspective of doing it from inside a small tent

    I’m definitely more comfortable on the exped. This is the winter edition which is 9cm instead of 7(or 6?) on the normal one. S2S is supposed to be 10 but the exped feels thicker. I think this is because the top fabric is somewhat stretchy and I don’t need to deflate it as much to get the same amount of back support.
