Expat Reveals TRUTH About Life On The Silver Coast

Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere sits down with Jime, an expat from Argentina who has moved to Portugal. She and her husband didn't choose Lisbon or Porto though. They decided to be in a smaller town along the water on the Silver Coast. The town is called Espinho and just south of Porto. Is it too small though? Will someone get bored in a small town? What about the weather? Jime reveals the truth about life in a small town in Portugal.

@@ExpatsEverywhere You guys are so great at what you do! Sometimes you interview certain expats and their perspectives on the experience are particularly illuminating and intriguing. You almost want to check in later and to see how their journey and thoughts about living in Portugal are evolving. Jime is a great example. Josh interviewed an expat who moved to Lisbon several months ago who had great thoughts about the transition to Portugal. Kalie had a lady musician in Porto in a live group who was really interesting. I’m just so curious about how their adjustment to Portugal has been going over time, what challenges they faced as they got more into it, what became easier, what they have continued to learn? Are they still in that area or did they move on? It’s just a thought. More than anything thanks for all you guys do. I can’t tell you how helpful your channel has been.

@@RThirkill Thank you very much. It's honestly, not a bad idea at all. Maybe it's something we could do on our podcast as well. The real tricky thing about KZread is the title and thumbnail aspect. I don't know if we could make the connection between the guest's first interview with us and their second so people that have seen the first realize it's them and we create an increased desire to watch the second one. Let us think about this. - Josh & Kalie

We'll keep doing expat interviews as long as people keep watching them. 😁 Jime has an in-depth pros and cons list for Espinho so that could by a contributing factor for her thoughtful responses. Espinho is a beach with a lot of teenage memories for me... Because the train station are so close to the main beach and city center with everything we might need, its the most famous beach - town of the Porto area for generations. Perfect to teenage groups or young adults that dont own a car. Until i have my first car, Espinho was the way for everyone i grow up with, and i am from north-east porto town....

I spent a month in Espinho in January of 2022. Lots of rain, the apartment I rented was cold, the waves were fierce in the Winter (dangerous) and not much happening socially. Affordability is definitely much better than Porto or Lisbon. If you like a quieter pace, it’s a lovely place to be, especially in the warmer dryer months of the year. I was their last March and it was way more pleasant.

I live on the central Oregon coast now and this sounds identical to our weather here. Winters are miserable with lots of rain and pounding waves, the towns basically shut down for much of the winter. It's freezing and cold, and it hails (small pebbles). Spring is full of rain every day but it's warmer, at least. The summers are bustling and gorgeous, and tourism is the biggest economic driver. Everything's blooming and the weather is fantastic, but not too warm (averages ~65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, with a few outliers).

My partner and I are considering a move to PT in the future. We first visited Porto ~7 years ago, visited again in 2022 and will be coming back again in a couple of months. Initially my partner was all about Porto but we visited Espinho and we really liked it. It's so close to Porto via train, its quiet, and of course it's less expensive. We currently live in a city of ~90k so we are used to quiet times like winter time, and our largest city is 2 hours by car. The nice thing about either being retired/semi-retired and/or being a remote worker you could leave the area for month or so in the winter....like going to the Algarve. Nice getting Jime's take on living there!

Great info. It confirms my suspicions about tourism impact seasonally and the weather north of Lisbon. I currently live in Tucson AZ USA where the desert weather is mild in the winter. I moved here from a tourist town where there are lots of things to do 6mo. but it’s a hassle navigating the crowds. The other 6mo. most things are closed. I’m thinking I need a larger city where the tourism impact is offset with lots of other things to do year round. You gave me something to think about when you asked whether it’s seeing the water or being in the water that’s important for the location you pick. 🤔 I’m curious about Setubal both from the weather and accessibility standpoint. I will need to walk or have public transportation. Did you or Josh do a video on this and I just missed it? Thanks 😊

Very useful interview with a balanced coverage of the issues. A few things that were not covered, unless I missed them: housing - are they renting? how did they find their housing? plans to purchase?, etc. ; experience with the medical system? do they have private medical insurance? ; what kind of visa are they using? ; banking - were they able to open a local account? was that easy to do?. Also, a number of tourists comment that many people smoke in public spaces. Is that just a big city tourist area problem? That would have been an interesting question. A general comment: Some of the b-roll shots seemed to have been stock footage of things (random city street, restaurant, nightlife, subway, etc.) and not actual footage from Espinho but it was not possible to tell which was which. Confusing.

We are Australian and recently moved with family to Praia Da Rocha and were surprised by how run down most of the buildings are and how windy it is at the beach which really spoils the Beach lifestyle. We will move back to Bodrum Turkiye ASAP as the water and landscape is so much more beautiful and its rarely windy. Positives have been the beautiful people and high quality affordable red wine as a treat. Crazy expensive rent here though 😅

So, cost of living in Portugal is very affordable, but it´s a lot more fun if ou have a salary/income from a country with much higher cost of living (and pay less taxes than locals due to NHR status) because - I feel so bad for them!!! Why is it like that??? - salaries in Portugal are much lower. So close to self-awareness. So close.

This was very interesting and useful for me. I could relate to so much she was saying, and her perspective on moving to Portugal. Just one piece of advice #Expats everywhere - stay away from the annoying stock video footage. I spent time peering at it to see if was actually Espinho, and actually your guest, but it obviously wasn't (unless they have London buses there...?). It really adds nothing and actually makes your content look dodgy and fake, which I'm sure it's not. OTOH, more shots of Espinho would have really been nice.

Hey, Annie. We had a lot of our own footage in their. Stuff that we didn't have enough of, our Portuguese PT editor added what she could find. It is what it is. We liked her work on this one. We ran out of time to go to Espinho again to get what was missing. Every shot of Espinho was ours because there's zero stock footage of the town. - Josh & Kalie

@@ExpatsEverywhere That's not the definition of an "expat". An expatriate is somebody who doesn't stay in his "patria" (= home country) - it doesn't say anything about the lenghts of the absence. I have "expat" friend who don't intend to return to their country anytime soon, but they call themselves "expats" anyway. Copied from the net: Semantics of the word expat: Dictionary definitions for the current meaning of the word include: Expatriate: 'A person who lives outside their native country' (Oxford) or 'living in a foreign land' (Webster's).[ These definitions contrast with those of other words with a similar meaning, such as: Migrant: 'A person who moves from one place to another in order to find work or better living conditions' (Oxford),[5] or 'one that migrates: such as a: a person who moves regularly in order to find work especially in harvesting crops' (Webster's);[6] or Immigrant 'A person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country' (Oxford),[7] or 'one that immigrates: such as a: a person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence (Webster's).[8] The varying use of these terms for different groups of foreigners can be seen as implying nuances about wealth, intended length of stay, perceived motives for moving, nationality, and even race. This has caused controversy, with some commentators asserting that the traditional use of the word "expat" has had racist connotations.[9][10]
