My dog came down with this disease in about 2007. I visited several vets and none could discover the root issue. She was withering away in front of me, as the doctor here describes. I studied on the internet what had to be more than 100 hours and came upon a site that offered study articles, and one article described my dog's exact symptoms. I paid, I think, $1.62 for the article, which solved the mystery. I was lucky enough to have a mutual friend that knew someone that owned a slaughterhouse, and for eight years my angel survived on "fresh" pancreas. When I first gave the pancreas to her, it was like dropping an old dry sponge into water. I could practically see her swell back up with life. I procured it approximately 40-pounds at a time, processed and froze it. I administered it to her twice per day, with food. When she was 14-years-old, that last slaughterhouse in town shut down. I tried to switch her to powdered enzymes, but her old body wouldn't take to them. I couldn't bear to put her down, and it was a short wait. I'm glad I didn't. She walked into the room where I was working, tripped, fell on the carpet and just plain died literally at my feet. It was an experience that I expect few will ever endure. It was beautiful. This disease is a brutal killer. But by virtue of my intense research, I got to have eight more years with my sweet companion. Pay close attention to what the doctor says in this video. It is very good information. She is obviously very well informed about EPI, and that is a rare thing to find, even among veterinarians. Good job, Doc.

I lost my beloved Japanese Chin/Shitzu mix five months ago to exactly this disease. We struggled with it for many years. None of the many vets I went to helped me very much. I cooked for her, gave enzymes, researched constantly but ultimately to no avail. I always believed it was the processed dog food I gave her in ignorance, that caused her demise. Would love another dog someday, but am afraid to do it without a vet like you to help me give her the best life. Thank you for posting these videos.

LET ME JUST SAY THE WAY YOU JUST EXPLAINED THIS MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS DESTINED TO FIND THIS VIDEO. I have spent countless hours studying different diseases after taking in my dog buddy about two years ago. He is a 3 year old mixed basset hound dog. His owner abandoned him at a year old. He had parvo and beat it when he was a puppy. Upon taking Buddy in he was very thin with abnormal muscle tone. I notice his hips stick out follow by a very thin belly area followed by highly defined ribs. I have been trying to figure out what has been wrong with him over and over again. People have looked at me as you described and thought Buddy is being neglected still even though i feed him the best food and make sure he has enough. He has explosive bouts of diarreah where he has to run for me to take him outside and it is a yellow color. When he vomits I have seen food from 3 days previous that is still undigested along with undigested food in his stool.I took him to a pet emergency hospital where he stayed over night and when I picked him up she had ran a test on his pancreas and said it showed he had pancreatitis. I paid for him to have exploratory stomach surgery and they said his spleen was out of place kind of tucked under his rib cage and his intestines were also somewhat out of place. They found bacteria and after his surgery prescribed him 250mg of metronidazole every day and buddy cleared up...TEMPORARILY. The runny stool came back along with the vomiting and he has not gained any weight. His ribs are showing and the poor guy is always so hungry and I never could figure out why until I came across EPI and SIBO and have researched them very well. I believe his pancreatitis was prolonged and the enzymes damaged it leaving him with EPI and the reason these antibiotics seem to help UNTIL they are gone is because of the bacterial overgrowth. He is sleeping right now curled in a ball. He drinks water very fast and then his left side swells and you can hear water swish around until he vomits liquid or enough time passes that it goes away. You just explained to me exactly what ive been thinking the last couple days and now im going to save him! thank you !

Its really gross looking stuff after you've mixed it but my dog doesn't mind it. I soak her kibble in water and squirt the medicine on top. I prayed for a miracle and found this stuff. I would love to get her on a raw food diet, but have a feeling she'll have to use this medicine forever. But who knows maybe raw food is the answer. Time will tell.

She's doing great, she's still on gastro elm plus. If I stop giving it to her she get pancreatitis almost right away. I'm switching veterinarians though to see if they can give me reason for why this is happening. I've also switched her food to The Honest Kitchen, it's only been a couple days but she's loving it. It's got to be better than the kibble I was feeding her. My vet said kibble was the only thing she can eat but its never gotten any better so I'm trying this food now. I want to have her tested for EPI, maybe that's what's causing her to get pancreatitis if not on her GEP medication.

Can I just ask why annual vaccines are to discontinued? in Australia these are compulsory for any kennel visits so I would love to understand this more. My vets thinks my pup has EPI or Addison's disease and will have blood tests again to check asap. I am highly considering it is EPI and have thought this before, although it was not followed up after her stools firmed up (has all other symptoms other than vomiting). After wanting her to be on raw food for along time now but not getting the information to help her it is nice to know we were trying to give the right diet. Thank you so much for this video!

Almost certainly carbohydrate related. Wild canines consume practically zero carbs. We know from human nutrition that when you consume fats with carbs, the body will use glucose from carbs first, leaving the fats to circulate in the blood or be stored (often leading to fatty liver). Eliminating carbs will allow the body to burn fats for energy so they don't accumulate. Commercial dog kibble can contain 40% or more carbohydrates. This leads to chronic high insulin levels, insulin resistence, diabetes, and overworked pancreas. Eliminate carbs and vast majority of pancreatitis cases will be resolved. Low fat diets only hide the real problem until it becomes diabetes; shortening life span and leading to high vet & medication bills (and a miserable family member)!

My dog has all the symptoms of epi, except he is over weight, is that possible? He is a 9yr old German Shepard.

It is possible for an EPI Dog to be overweight. My EPI cavalier needed to lose weight because I was over feeding him.

@@Djbadley I strted on digstive enzymes and probioics before the TLI test. Asked the vets to test for EPI. i was pretty much left on my own but had already joined a facebook group.(EPI - Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in dogs). I started putting digestive enzymes and probiotics on Rocky(my EPI cavalier's food) and fed him 3 times a day. Morning, mid afternoon and about 8.30 at night. Also then added B12 (cobalaplex) 1 tablet every second day. Then daily. The last time he was weighed it was said he could do with losing a little weight. I do not feed kibble. My cavaliers all get fresh meat for mid afternoon. Rocky is now getting a course of B12 injections. He gets his 2nd injection tomorrow. this is something I asked the vets to do as he is not absorbing the B12 from the tablets very well. I use Dr Mercola Probiotics and Digestive enzymes but as you have a German Sheperd you might want to look at enzyme Diane. Apart from that its just poop watching and cleaning up. One of my other Rescue Cavaliers was eatig Rocky's poop and then getting sick so cleaning it up was the best way to stop him. Also means I get to know what a normal poop for rocky is

Now I'm wondering if they didn't test for this because they want to vaccinate my pup next week... o_0 They said in the morning that they would do the blood test, then in the evening they said they didn't want to do that test anymore... O_0

@@keithjamieson9763 thank you, I've changed his diet from kibble to cooked since posting this. And have gone back to 4x a day feeding. And his poop has improved, he doesn't have the wet dog smell, belly is no longer red, and he seems to be happier. So even though my vet was no help, God provided a solution that is working for my little guy!

@@majesticwonFine Glad to know it us helping. Kibble is full of crap. When you are feeding fresh food the body is absorbing most of it, whereas with kibble a lot of it is rubbish and just goes in one end and out the other, even in healthy dogs. you will also notice that the poop is a lot less smelly, Feeding fresh food is always better than feeding processed food. You may want to cut down amounts if feeding 4 times a day. I have my EPI dog down to twice a day now

@@keithjamieson9763 , Yes I agree. Kibble is crap! I will feed raw in the future. He's soon to be 4mos, so I figured the 4x a day would be beneficial right now. I may see if next week I can figure out my portions to get him down to 3x. As long as his poop is good we can and will continue with the 3x.

CAN I JUST ORDER DR MERCOLA DIGESTIVE ENZYMES & SPRINKLE IT OVER SOME CHOPPED UP FRESH BONELESS CHICKEN MEAT & A FEW GREEN BEANS?? SHOULD I GRADUALLY JUST ADD A LITTLE CHICEN WITH HIS USUAL KIBBLE AT FIRST OR JUST GIVE THE FRESH COOKED MEAL ONLY?

  • @kaitlinjensen

Please check if the Mercola enzymes is plant based or porcine based. Plant based enzymes will not work well for your dog. Leave out the beans, you need to keep the fiber down low, since you still give kibble, there will be fiber in there. She recommends getting your dog stable before making a lot of changes, and always best to make one change at a time. Long before my dog was diagnosed, she got grain free kibble, but it only caused her trouble. She got a bit of tripe as topper, but because she was a mess on kibble, I changed to raw just like that, I just quit the kibble, and she didn’t have any problems with that change. If something is bad for your dog, quit it immediately, I’d say. My dog was diagnosed 1.5 years after the switch to raw meat. Most important for you now is getting porcine based enzymes and keep fiber under 4%, have the B12 level checked if you haven’t. There’s an EPI for dogs group on Facebook, very helpful, except they love their kibble and antibiotics there, which I just don’t understand. Many EPI dogs don’t do great on chicken. Mine is fine with chicken, just be aware.
