Yeah. When I was in high school, I worked very hard to get a spot on the football team and I did. After my very last career game which ended in a double overtime loss in the 2nd round of the playoffs in November 2019, when I saw the game end, the waterworks began to flow into my eyes as I knew that after working so hard to become a high school football player, it was finally over as I became emotional and exited in tears. It was very tough for me to say goodbye to my teammates, and the game I loved.

Same. Don Mattingly is my favorite player of all time and I worshipped him as a kid. I don't have to mention any of his accomplishments because you already know them I'm sure. One of the hardest things was when he missed out on getting a shot at a ring in 95.' That was my senior year of high school and would end up being his final year as a player in the majors. The very next year The Yanks won the series. I think that was the moment my childhood started to end and real life began. It was sad but I am fortunate to look back on that time as one of the best times of my life cheering for one of the classiest acts in baseball history.

I have never been a Yankees fan and never will. But Mariano Rivera was posibly the greatest closer in baseball. A class act, a consummate player and an emotional tip of the cap. This is what all athletes should strive for.

Rivera's change of expression when he realizes what's happening and what it all means reminds me of Jim Bouton's line in Ball Four, “A ballplayer spends a good piece of his life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.”

I don’t think that Jackie Robinson could have hand picked himself a better player to be the last to wear 42. A player that has always been the standard for amazing ball play and unconditional respect and kindness. Values that Jackie’s memory commits us to remember every day. Mo embodied it perfectly.

Baseball's not always perfect. MLB doesn't always get it right. But this moment in time, was a showcase of everything good that baseball is.

It's the rarest of instances when you have a class exemplified hand the baton to another during his most gracious exit! It was beyond fitting that one of baseball's best men (Jeter) comes out to the mound to embrace another best man (Mo) as he bids farewell!

You can tell by the look in his eyes he doesn't want to leave the diamond. Man what an emotional moment.

This was done perfectly from the start. Pettitte and Jeter pulling him from the game and not a word being said from the announcers. Perfect.

Baseball does the best farewell to any great player, because baseball fans genuinely love their team. As a Cardinal fan, I still teared up watching this, because this man gave his heart out to baseball, the fans, and the Yankees. Mo, you will be missed. Edit: I expect Yadi’s send off to be epic, he deserves one.

Mariano was one of the classiest professional athletes I've seen in my lifetime.

I'm not crying, your crying.... Baddest man to ever step on the mound in the late innings, best intro and walk out in all of sports and years of loyalty to my Yankees. Thank you Mo for everything you did in the sport of baseball and for the yankees

Na. My best experience ever was the final game at the old stadium. I stayed there until this police officer told me I had to leave. I told him just give me another minute. And after that he walked me out the stadium.

Courtney Gibson I traveled back to NY in august 2008 to see the old stadium for the last time...I was sitting with the bleacher creatures.....very similar to what happened with u...security allowed me to stand there for about 10 minutes to soak it all in for the final time in my life....two best moments for me...jeters last game ( still have the moment recorded on my cell).... And game 2 of the 95 alds ( the Jim leyritz game)....I've been to over 300 games in my life... When mattingly hit that hr in the 6th inning.... I've NEVER heard that stadium louder....I was sitting in the first row of the right field upper deck....sierra went yard right before mattingly.... O Neill went yard in the 7th off Charlton... Then leyritz hit the 2 run hr off Belcher....and I believe pat Kelly was on first...still the best game I evet attended

Took the subway to Yankee stadium and watched piazza get beaned by Clemens in the second game.....I was sitting behind the plate in the upper deck....

"Tears and cheers" is absolutely right. I cried like a baby watching this live at the time. And again watching this video. Any true baseball fan could not deny how incredible Mo is. It would have been nice to see Jorge Posada make a surprise appearance and walk out with Derek Jeter and Andy Pettite. Even watching Joe Girardi cry brought me back to when he used to catch for Mo back in the 1990s. So much history with all those guys. Incredible.

You will not get this type of emotion and intimacy in any other professional sport. Baseball has an iconic romantacism to it that is unparalleled. Legend in every sense of the word 🙌🏽

Imagine having a last day at work like this where that many people respected and appreciated your contributions in the city of your gift.

One of the very few times crying will be acceptable in baseball! It's tough seeing him go, but it was an absolute gift having him. Mo is a living legend and will be for a long time to come! Thank you for everything Sandman. You will be missed!

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I will always hate the Yankees, but Mariano was one of the few players of that team that really earned my respect and liking. Not just because of his dominance, but his class, and overall personality on the field. He was one of the most unique players the Yankees ever had, and I don't think even Jeter had such class. I really hope Rivera's greatness is not matched for a long time. He earned his greatness.

Oh god, who gives a shit if you dislike the Yankees or not. Why does everyone have to preface their message with this or "I'm a fan of ____" before they go on to say how much they respect a player. No one cares.

The Yankees have had some really great, respectable players. Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams are two of my all time favorites, and like you I am not a Yankee fan.

Leo R. Because most comments come from three types of people. 1. Fans that don't see him pitch regularly because their respective team is in another division, but respect who he was as a pitcher. 2. Fans that saw him pitch for years like me, A RED SOX fan, just for your personal knowledge, and saw him dominate for years on end, but respect who he was as a pitcher, 10 fold. And 3. People like you that leave comments for the mere fact that they need to show their distaste for someone else's opinion and how they express it. The true comment that "no one cares" about. So, that's why.

This guy was so good it's hard to comprehend. I thought I saw the best when I watched Jordan play, but I think Mariano may have more respect than Jordan will ever have. For years all the Yankees had to do was get the lead by the 8th inning and the game was over. Unbelievable stats, but the postseason this guy is so far the best ever. Mets fan here, should have rooted for this guy.

As a Sox fan, i fucking love Mariano Rivera. I can only imagine what its like to do something you love for so long, completely dominate at it, have an entire league of people who support and love you, and then realize that its all over. Living legend, top 3 pitchers of ALL TIME. Such a class act, and a great role model. He couldn't have had a better career.

As a long time red Sox fan here, have to say much respect for Mariano Rivera he was a total class and in my book the greatest closer of my time..congratulations to him.
